An Invitation to A Balinese Wedding

It's an auspicious days for wedding at this moment in Bali according to the local lunar calendar. You will see many wedding ceremonies across the island.

Yesterday, I went to invitation of a wedding of one my relative in a remote village in west Bali.

There are two steps in a Balinese wedding ceremony. The first step is conducted in the bride home and next the the groom's house. It usually does not happen in the same day.

The first (in the bride's home) is held when the family of the groom come and propose to the girl's family. The groom family usually come accompanied by the village chief (as witness) of the proposal and wedding.

Next, there was a blessing ritual lead by a Balinese Hindu priest. This was to make the marriage "official." There is also a ritual called "mepamit" which means that the girl say good bye to her parents and ancestors (in relation to ancestor worship) and then she would go with her husband to his house.

When the blessing or the wedding ceremony is finished, the bride would leave her parents and go to her new place. At the new house, there would be another reception or wedding party (the house of the groom). In fact, this is the main ceremony.

I could say there were a lot of people coming to the wedding. I could not even find a place to sit 😅 . It didn't really matter. It's all good.

The family served us with coffee, tea and some cakes. Later we were also served with rice with wrapped with banana leaves. And there were no spoon nor fork.

And that's my story attending a simple Bali wedding. Thanks.
