Peppy On The Lam

avatar

Since I came home after being away for a few days, I haven’t seen my favorite skunk, Peppy. Perhaps he is gone to new territory to check for a mate or, if female, maybe has babies to attend.

These are photos taken of Peppy before my trip. I would leave cat food and other food out for him and he would visit each evening.

Peppy stopping to smell the Mallow flowers. Skunks are now for their ability to spray a foul smelling liquid at predators. They do not have great eyesight but their sense of smell is strong.

I’m not worried about Peppy spraying me as he knows me. They only spray if threatened and it takes days for the anal glands to fill up again so they have to be careful how they use it. Once they spray they are defenceless. Skunks are able to climb into open buildings and dig under decks but they do not climb trees.

Skunks are friendly and intelligent little critters. They can make good pets but it is not wise to play with them without gloves or protection. They have sharp claws and may unintentionally scratch.

Peppy thinks about coming up the deck steps. I don’t encourage him to come too close as he is a wild animal and not used to humans. Most people run when they see a skunk as they automatically think they will spray.

The flowers Peppy was interested in looking at are the Grandmother flowers or Mallow growing along the back deck. They are a perennial flower and add a nice splash of color to the yard.

Since I brought back and planted the first Mallow plant from my grandmother’s old homestead I noticed the bees and butterflies are attracted to these flowers.

Other perennial flowers are the Orange Lilies. Both the Mallow and the lilies are no maintenance flowers and are both in bloom now.

I’m hoping Peppy will return for a visit as I enjoyed seeing the little critter.

A place I had in Spokane had a female that lived under the corner of the garage. She never bothered us, nor we her. She shared space with our cats and my Rottweiler with no problem. Every spring there were the cutest kits, and she'd bring them out on the lawn to play and eat bugs.

I hope peppy returns soon. Even if it's as pepita the momma :)

Thanks @bigtom13. I’m so glad you had a friendly skunk too. I hope Peppy or Pepita returns with little ones.

All of my dogs have been introduced to skunks :) Tomato juice is my friend. Otherwise, they are serious bug eaters and due their space in the eco system. They are funny, playful creatures by nature and if you don't threaten them they won't make you smell bad!

Haha @bigtom13 love your comments about skunks. I did become attached to the little critter and hope he (or she) shows up so I will know he is okay.

Hi Johann. I would love to see him back as Pepita with some little ones.

Nice to know @bigtom13 had a good relationship with a skunk. :)

That would be so cool if Peppy was a Pepita and you would post photos of little skunkies and their mum 😁
Yes, @bigtom13 proves that you were completely right and peppy or Pepita would even live with you side by side 😊

Afternoon Johann. It was great to know @bigtom13 had a good experience with a skunk. Most people, when I mention about a skunk, turn up their noses and say eeeeK, I wouldn’t want a skunk around. They don’t understand the dynamics of a skunk and what a gentle little critter it really is.

I have a sinking feeling something happened to Peppy, either killed on the road or someone has trapped him. If trapped they would take the skunk a long way from here and let him loose.

There was a skunk killed on the road about 6 km from here towards Montague. I don’t know if Peppy would travel that far but they do check out new territory.

It’s raining softly here this morning and 24C.

Wishing you a wonderful Tuesday dear Johann.🤗

Good morning Jo,

I always liked to watch them because the skunks look so cute in black and white, but of course, I have never smelled one in my life. I also haven't known the things you told me about them, but I am sure I wouldn't have said eeeK 😉 although I would have had much respect of it 😊

I hope he/she is just strolling around and comes back with or without babies.

We have a hot Summer day at 29C, but they say it will rain tomorrow and cool down a bit. Hopefully the weekend will be nice again :)

Last night I was on a mountain nearby with my daughter because she wanted to see Neowise too, but either the comet is already too far away or it was hidden in the hazy area over the horizon, but we couldn't see it ... so we will wait for the next time when it flies by in about 5 or 6000 years 😁

I wish you also a wonderful day, dear Jo 😀

Hi Johann. It was a strange day with rain , then temps near 30C and later a flash heavy downpour of rain. Everything is lush and green.

It would have been nice if you had seen Neowise when your daughter was with you. But Maybe in another lifetime or 6000 yrs.😀

Still no sign of Peppy. 😒

Have a happy Wednesday dear Johann. 😊

Good morning Jo,

We had over 30 C yesterday and they predicted rainstorms from today on, but the sky is blue and we have about 26 C. Some cool rain would be nice though 🌧️

Yes, it would have been cool if we had seen the comet, but we had a nice walk and time together after quite a while, and that was great too 😀

Maybe Peppy has really moved somewhere else where he has found nice people too.

Have a wonderful Wednesday too, dear Jo 😊

Good morning Johann. We are in for a few days around 30C but cooler at night. Summer is going fast.

I’m glad you had some quality father and daughter time even without Neowise appearing. 😊

It’s been lovely to see all the lovely comments from others who had a close connection with a skunk.

Have a wonderful Thursday and hopefully a nice rainfall dear Johann. 😊

Good morning Jo 😊

Yesterday was hot, but the rain in the evening cooled the air a bit down. For today they predict up to 30 C but also rain - I'll see if I get wet from rain or from sweating 😉

Yes, the time with my daughter was nice - such times happens only seldom, because although she is still living at home she has her own life now.

You see, you are not alone, Jo, and I think we all would love to see a post "Peppy is back with family" 😁

You have a wonderful day too, dear Jo 😊

Are there spray life risky or thy use it for predating? You must be living in near an exciting area, that looks fascinating!

The spray isn't poisonous but may sting if it hits the eyes. it will not cause any permanent damage. The spray has a foul door that will stop a predator in it's tracks.

Excellent photos Jo!! I do hope Peppy finds his (or her) way back to you! I think skunks are cute even if they can be little stinkers..lol. I worry about the outside cats wandering away to other colonies when I'm away even though I always have someone come over to feed them. They do get to know certain people and miss that person. Hopefully, Peppy will remember all the nice goodies you put out and be back around soon! 🙂 💞

Thanks Dee. ❤️ It just seems odd there is no sign of him. I hope he (or she) is alright. I’m glad my two cats are inside so I don’t have to worry about them too.

Have a wonderful Wednesday. 😊

Awwww! I have a feeling Peppy (Or Pepita) will be back soon. They usually have their litters in May or June, but, you are further North, so that may be just about right! I hope we get to see some little ones frolicking on your lawn.

Growing up, my neighbor had one as a pet. We all loved it! It was a baby and I want to say it had to have no anal glands, otherwise, it wouldn't have lived inside. I was young, so I don't know that part.

Anyway, you made my day with the cute shots!

I'm so glad you had the experience of knowing a pet skunk, Denise. 💞 I can see how one could become attached to the adorable little critters. To make them an inside pet the anal glands would have to be removed unless the owners liked the smell when the skunk is frightened. 😆 They have wicked claws and I wonder how they deal with him not unintentionally scratching them.

I hope to get to post some little baby skunk photos. 😊. @bigtom13 had a nice story about a female skunk when he lived in Spokane. He referred to the skunk babies as kits.

Thanks for you lovely comment and for the tip.

This is the first time I've ever uttered this phrase: those are beautiful skunk pictures. We have taken care of feral cats for years now...little houses for them, etc. Every now and then one will disappear for a few days and then return. So, don't give up hope. Wild animals tend to be independent.

I hope Peppy comes back, and is in good health.

Haha, @agmoore, it is not a common remark but the little critter was adorable and friendly.

Thanks and I hope he is just having an independent streak and will return.😊

@kohsamui99, I was delighted to see Peppy last night. It was late when I went to the back deck to bring in the hummingbird feeder and there he was, all wet and solo. I have no idea where he was for two weeks but he is back. I set some food out for him.

I couldn’t see him clearly as only the outside light was on, except for being soaking wet from the downpour we had, he seemed okay, I guess he doesn’t want to introduce any of his female skunks to me. 😄

Howdy redheadpei! Peppy the skunk huh? I always avoided them like the plague so I didn't know much about them but your information is very interesting. I hope he shows back up.

Oh, this post was 8 days ago, has he come around again?

Cowboy, how have you been? Yes Peppy is back but being very elusive. He came by late one evening and I gave him some food. Maybe it’s mating season or something for skunks but at least I know he is alive.

Skunks are misunderstood, They friendly, playful critters and wouldn’t spray unless frightened or in danger. They are great at checking the lawn and eating insects & grubs.

Howdy redheadpei! I'm doin great, thanks for asking. I'm spending all my time working on projects around the house and property. I agree about the skunks. When I was a kid we had a pet skunk but he was fixed so he couldn't spray anyone.

Also, when I was a kid I was riding my bike and a skunk ran into the path that I was riding on and I ran into it and it sprayed me. Oh my gosh that was a nightmare. lol.

Good morning Cowboy! Good to hear from you and to know you are doing good and keeping busy- and out of trouble?

Peppy hasn’t been around much lately and I figure he is out romancing. 😀

That would be a nightmare to be sprayed by a skunk. I bet the skunk was as frightened as you smelled. Tomato juice has been a remedy to get rid of the smell. I’ve heard of using vinegar, baking soda and water.

Have a great day 😊

Howdy again redheadpei! That's interesting about the tomato juice, how would you use that, do you know? I hope I never have to know how but I'm curious!

Cowboy, If your dog is sprayed you would rub the tomato juice all over him and leave on for awhile then rinse him off with warm water mixed with baking powder and some vinegar. best do that outside or in bathtub if small dog.

You would do the same if you were sprayed. I think if it’s in the eyes just rinse with warm water. The spray will not leave any permanent damage to the eyes or body.

Howdy redheadpei! Thanks for that remedy for skunk spray. I pray that the dog nor any of us ever need it though. lol. How's it going up there? I think the temperatures at night have to be getting pretty cool by now.

Welcome Cowboy. 😊 I hope you or the dog don’t get sprayed. The dog might get chased if he chases a skunk. Yes It is cooling down at night but it is still staying warm during the day. We really need a good rain.

I hope all is well with you.

Howdy redheadpei! It was 104 today and the next 2 days are going to be similar. So it's pretty darn hot. I'm getting used to it though so it don't bother me much. I'm heading to your blog tonight or tomorrow. I'll try to put an intelligent comment in. lol.

Hi Cowboy! I hope that hurricane Laura didn't come near where you live in Texas. We are suppose to get some rain and wind from what is left of it by Sunday.

106 seems darn warm but one does become climatized to whatever the temperature is.

I always appreciate you visiting my blog.

Have a wonderful weekend.😊

Howdy redheadpei! Sorry for the late reply. I've been so busy the last few weeks that I didn't even get on the Hive. I was remodeling part of the house so my step-daughter and grandson could move in.

They moved down from Ohio and are starting over in Texas. Our temperatures are hitting highs in the 80's and they are finally getting into the 60's at night and it feels so good! you guys are probably in the 40's at night. brrrrr! lol.

Nice to hear from you Cowboy. 😊

You have been busy doing carpenter work and will soon have a grandson to entertain. I think you will love telling him stories.

Nice your temperatures are a bit cooler. Fall is in the air here at night. No frost yet but will be soon enough. The Atlantic provinces are predicted to be impacted by Hurricane Teddy coming up the coast by Tuesday or Wednesday. Hopefully it will have lost a lot of power by then.

Take care my friend.

Howdy redheadpei! sorry for the late reply. I've been off line most of the last couple of months but I decided to try and spend 20-30 minutes a day on here and see if I can manage that.

My step-daughter and grandson are living here but there is no telling stories to him, he's 23 yrs old and very independent and doesn't want to hear anything from anyone because he knows everything already. lol. He thinks Mrs. J and I are hopeless old fools. that's okay though, he will mature someday and realize the truth.

How's it going up there, is it snowing yet?

Hi Cowboy! I wondered what you were doing when i haven’t seen you on Hive.

I’m sure your grandson will realize how smart you and Mrs. J are later on in his life’s journey.

We’ve had a lovely autumn and no snow yet but, of course, winter is not too far away. How’s your weather this time of year?

I hope you can spent some time on Hive each day.

Howdy today redheadpei! The weather here is wonderful...in the 70's during the day and nice and cool in the upper 50's or 60's at night. I love the winters here but they are too short, only two months. lol. Then it gets hot fast, that's why I need a Canadian summer home!
