The Occupant Review (Netflix Movie) / Reseña de Hogar (Película de Netflix)
The Occupant is a Spanish film directed and written by the Pastor brothers (Álex and David), starring actor Javier Gutiérrez and Mario Casas, these two being the pivotal characters in the story. The movie also features actresses Bruna Cusí and Ruth Díaz, who have a secondary role.
I had the opportunity to watch The Occupant with my family a few days ago on Netflix, which is the main distributor of the film. It was interesting to watch a film released during quarantine, thanks to the current situation and with the cinemas closed, it is difficult to find new movies unless it's via streaming services or TV.
The Plot
The occupant revolves around the story of Javier, a former advertising executive who used to have a very successful life that allowed him to own a spectacular apartment with his family. However, in recent years he has had a hard time finding a new job and is unable to afford said luxury apartment, and thus, he is faced with the hard decision of selling it and moving to a cheaper home, which he does.
Javier is obsessed with the life he used to have and after realizing that he still has the keys to his old apartment he decides to go inside once more while the new owners are out. Javier soon makes a decision to approach the family that has just moved into his old luxury apartment, with the goal of stealing the life of the family's husband and replacing him, wanting not only the apartment but also the husband's family.
A Movie that Resembles Parasite.
I must admit that when we watched this movie I knew nothing about it, however, when I realized what the main theme and plot was, I couldn't help but think of Bong Joon Ho's Parasite, and due to the year difference between these two, it is hard not to get the idea that perhaps this was intentional due to that film's success.
It might just be a coincidence but it is hard to watch a movie with a plot similar to a far superior one.
Plot Conveniences
The film is carried by the amazing performance of Javier Gutiérrez, however, it is difficult to empathize with any of the characters beyond a superficial point of view and that includes the protagonist. The characters do not have depth since the script is uninspired, focusing mainly on actions and not on motives.
Emphasis is placed on Javier, but there is no noticeable evolution in his character to surprise us, there is no character arc. He is simply a man who is having a bad time financially and then decides to steal someone else's life.
I was annoyed that everything turns out amazingly for Javier, there is no sense of danger, even the actions of other characters, particularly Tomás' wife, the man whose life he wants to steal, don't make much sense, they are not actions that a normal person would take. This film makes much use of the so-called plot convenience, which are unrealistic elements that only happen because it is a film and it is convenient.
Why would a woman so young, beautiful and rich look at Javier, a complete stranger who she sees as an old alcoholic with bad financial problems? Why does she let him accompany her only daughter to gym classes if she has just met him?
Answer: Because it is convenient.Why does nobody ever see Javier when he gets into the house?
Answer: Because it is convenient.All of this can be spared if the movie weren't set in such a realistic setting. Javier's plans are not masterplans because they can only work with unrealistic coincidences.
Uninspired Script but Amazing Performances.
Javier is an untouchable character, everything goes his way, however, this loses value when all the other characters are portrayed as stupid. When you introduce a villain protagonist in a film, there must be a rivalry with another character who has opposite values to make it interesting, however, the character of Tomás can not even be called a rival, since Javier gets rid of him with relative ease with methods that could only work in a movie.
These plot conveniences emphasize the poorly written script of this movie, which lacks depth and message, especially when compared to similar films such as the aforementioned Parasite.
A Nice Movie to Spend Time With.
Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate this movie, on the contrary, I found it very entertaining and I can understand why many people might like it. Javier Gutiérrez's performance is very good as well as the rest of the cast. It is not a bad movie, it is just not an amazing one.
The cinematography is quite good. I think that the first half feels "slower" than the second, and is, therefore, more boring. It seems to me that its weak point is the script because of its lack of depth, while on the other hand, its strongest point is the performances, good enough to deem this film as a pleasant experience.
This movie is definitely not bad and I recommend you watch it if you have nothing else to watch on Netflix, however, don't expect that much from it.

Hogar es una película española dirigida y escrita por los hermanos Pastor (Álex y David), la cual es protagonizada por el actor Javier Gutiérrez y Mario Casas, siendo estos dos los personajes centrales de la historia. También cuenta con la actuación de las actrices Bruna Cusí y Ruth Díaz, las cuales tienen un papel más secundario.
Tuve la oportunidad de ver Hogar con mi familia hace unos días en la plataforma de Netflix, distribuidora principal de la película. Fue interesante ver una cinta estrenada durante la cuarentena, ya que debido a la situación actual y con los cines cerrados, es difícil encontrar películas nuevas.
Hogar cuenta la historia de Javier, un ex-ejecutivo publicitario que solía gozar de mucho dinero y de un apartamento espectacular. Sin embargo, tiene dificultades para encontrar un nuevo trabajo y se le hace imposible costear el apartamento de lujo en el que vivía con su familia, así que deben venderlo y mudarse a un hogar más barato.
Javier está obsesionado con la vida que solía llevar, así que al darse cuenta que aún tiene las llaves de su antiguo apartamento decide infiltrarse en este. Javier pronto toma decisión de acercarse a la familia que se acaba de mudar a su antiguo apartamento de lujo, con el objetivo de robarle la vida al esposo de la familia y ponerse a sí mismo en su lugar.
Debo admitir que cuando vimos esta película no tenía ni la menor idea de la trama, cuando me di cuenta de cuál era la temática principal no pude evitar pensar en Parásito de Bong Joon Ho, y debido al año de diferencia que tienen estas dos, es difícil no hacerse la idea de que quizás esto sea intencional.
La película está llevada en su mayoría por la actuación de Javier Gutiérrez, sin embargo, es difícil empatizar con alguno de los personajes más allá desde un punto de vista superficial y eso incluye al protagonista. Los personajes no tienen profundidad, no es un guión con mucha inspiración, siendo que se basa principalmente en acciones y no en motivos.
Se hace énfasis en Javier, pero no hay una evolución notoria en su personaje como para sorprendernos, no hay un "arco de personaje". Es simplemente un hombre al que le va mal y luego decide robarle la vida a otra persona.
Un punto que me pareció fastidioso, es que a Javier todo le sale bien, no hay una sensación de peligro, incluso las acciones de otros personajes, en particular de la esposa de Tomás, el hombre al que quiere robarle la vida, no tienen mucho sentido, no son acciones que tomaría una persona normal. Esta película hace mucho uso de la llamada "plot convenience", que son elementos en un filme que no tienen sentido si lo aplicas a la realidad, pero que ocurren porque es una película y es conveniente.
¿Porqué una mujer tan joven, bella y rica se fijaría en Javier, un completo extraño que ella ve como un viejo alcohólico con malos problemas financieros?, ¿porqué lo deja acompañe a su única hija a clases de gimnasia si lo acaba de conocer? Porque es conveniente.
¿Porqué nadie nunca ve a Javier cuando éste se mete en la casa? Porque es conveniente.
Javier se presenta como un personaje intocable, un psicópata al que todo le sale bien, sin embargo, esto pierde valor cuando todos los demás personajes son representados como estúpidos. Cuando en una cinta presentas a un protagonista villano, debe haber una rivalidad con otro personaje que tenga valores opuestos para hacerlo interesante, sin embargo, el personaje de Tomás no puede ni llamarse un rival, ya que Javier se deshace de él con relativa facilidad con métodos que solo podrían funcionar en una película.
Estas son por nombrar unas de las pocas veces en las que Hogar hace énfasis en su guión pobremente escrito, el cual carece de profundidad y de mensaje, especialmente si se compara con películas similares como la ya anteriormente mencionada Parásitos.
No me malentiendan, no odié esta película, por el contrario, me pareció entretenida y puedo entender porqué a muchas personas podría gustarle. La actuación de Javier Gutiérrez es muy buena, todos los actores en general son bastante buenos y no es una mala película como tal, simplemente no puedo aplaudirla como lo haría con otros filmes.
La cinematografía no es en lo absoluto original, pero es bastante buena, siendo que Hogar es visualmente muy agradable. Encuentro que la primera mitad se siente más "lenta" que la segunda, y por ende es más aburrida. Me parece que su punto débil es el guión a causa de su falta de profundad y conveniencias argumentales, mientras que por otra parte, su punto más fuerte son las actuaciones, lo suficientemente buenas como para que ver la película sea una experiencia placentera.
