Good Day guys!

How would you end your day? I ended mine cooking and eating one of my favorite dishes. Chicharon Bulaklak. Chicharon bulaklak(aka deep fried ruffled fat) is a popular appetizer here in the Philippines. It is usually served with vinegar. This is actually the mesentery of the pig wherein its function is to hold the small intestines in place.

We ordered 2 kilos of Chicharon Bulaklak which costs 240 Php or 4.76 United States Dollar.

Here are the Cooking Instructions

  1. Thoroughly wash and rinse the ruffled fat until the foul odor is reduced. This is one important step so it won't taste like the odor. My brother even commented how can something that taste so good smell so bad.

  2. Rub it with salt and add a cup of vinegar then rinse it with water.

  3. Boil it with salt, whole pepper, garlic and dried bay leaves (You can also add lemon grass)

  5. Once it's tender remove it from the pot and then drain the excess water. You may cut it according to the desired size.

My brother heated in the pan just to remove a little moisture before deep frying it.

  6. Before deep frying it, add a little salt and make sure that it's distributed evenly. Then deep Fry it until the texture is crunchy.

  • Remove the excess oil by putting it in a paper towel and then serve with vinegar.

  • It was our first time preparing something like this with my brother. we really felt accomplished because we were finally able to make something that we really love eating. I would say that it's the best flower(bulaklak) that I've ever eaten. This was the best meal before ending the day.
