#MarketFriday: Here come the Clydesdales!
If you've ever seen a horse-drawn Budweiser parade, you've probably marveled at the majestic steeds.
These are mighty Clydesdale horses, one of the most recognizable heavy horse breeds. Clydesdales are easy to spot, thanks to their large stature, trademark feathering around their legs, and high-stepping gait.
Clydesdale Size
Clydesdales are among the tallest horse breeds, standing between 16 hands (64 inches) and 18 hands (72 inches) on average. Their imposing height is matched by their weight, which tops 1,600 pounds. The stallions often stand taller and weigh more than the mares.
Unique Characteristics of the Clydesdale
The most obvious defining characteristic of a Clydesdale is its large hooves. They're typically the size of frying pans, weighing around 5 pounds each. In contrast, an average thoroughbred racing horse has a hoof about a quarter of that size. Besides the hooves, Clydesdales also are known for their four white legs with lots of feathering. They have a high-stepping walk and trot, giving them a proud, impressive presentation.
Clydesdale Breeding and Uses
Clydesdales were developed to work hard and long. In their early history, they were used as war horses, carrying heavily armed soldiers. They have pulled agricultural implements, hauled logs in forestry, pulled freight, and milk wagons, and performed other general hauling tasks. Today, they are used for both riding and driving, and they are frequently crossed with thoroughbreds to develop strong, level-headed sport horses. They are still occasionally used in agricultural work and logging, but they largely have been replaced by machinery. They're frequently seen at fairs and exhibitions. Clydesdales also frequently serve as drum horses in parades. Each horse carries two drums that weigh more than 120 pounds apiece, along with an officer who rides. Clydesdales selected for this purpose must be at least 17 hands high (68 inches). With their calmness, agility, and strength, they make excellent trail horses. Those same traits also make them valuable therapy horses.
Budweiser Clydesdales visit Northern California for Fourth of July
By Daily Democrat
The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales is scheduled to make several appearances in areas like the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in Fairfield, Travis Airforce Base, and Woodland from June 30 to July 4, including the Rancho Cordova and Fairfield Independence Day weekend parades.
The eight-horse hitch will be harnessed to a red beer wagon, making the following public visits:
June 30: 5 p.m. — 7 p.m. in historic downtown Woodland on Main Street.
July 3: 10 a.m. — noon at the Rancho Cordova 3rd of July Parade.
July 4: 10 a.m. — noon at the City of Fairfield 4th of July Parade.
Horses chosen for the Budweiser Clydesdale hitch must be at least 4 years old, stand approximately 18 hands – or six feet – at the shoulder, weigh an average of 2,000 pounds, must be bay in color, have four white legs, and a blaze of white on the face and black mane and tail. A gentle temperament is very important as hitch horses meet millions of people each year.
A single Clydesdale hitch horse will consume as much as 20-25 quarts of feed, 40-50 pounds of hay and 30 gallons of water per day.
Did you notice the dalmatian?
They even have a COLLECTOR'S Budweiser mug with a pewter lid!

The tallest and biggest horses I've seen, hahaha!
Ohh yeah I read that 6 feet tall wow
I'd imagine a publicity stunt if they tried to give away free cold beer off the wagon, the city or state would yank the Bud Parade license in an instant. Sorry Sis, I don't have the power to !BEER you but...
Always, with Love (and a the first to get my new minted Full Dolphin vote) 🤗 🌺 💖

Hello dear friend @ silversaver888 good night
What a beautiful show, I appreciate that you show us these beautiful images and all your information
I take this opportunity to wish you a splendid weekend
The horses were HUGE!!!
Enjoy the weekend, @jlufer!
Not to nitpick... but I'm gonna nitpick. I recently did some digging into the history of European war horses, and it seems the popular notion of Clydesdales as mounts for knights doesn't really hold up.
Did the knights use Clydesdales?
I thought they used quarter horses and thoroughbreds!
Both of those classes/breeds did not exist yet, either. The terms in use for chargers ridden by knights included destrier, rouncey, and courser. Considerable debate seems to surround size. Complicating things more, the average medieval man was smaller than his modern counterpart. Most sources suggest it was a medium-weight horse, neither a small pony nor large draught animal.
I have seen the Budweiser Clydesdales in previous years. They are magnificent! Every year at the fair (except last year) the horse shows always feature Clydesdales; there are a lot of local businesses that sponsor the teams. It's something to behold, when they get them all out in the field and they are running amuck! They never collide with each other, although you are sure they are going to! Thanks for sharing sis! A lovely job! Take care!🤗😘🌸💞🇺🇸
I can imagine them running!!!
It makes me want to ride a horse again!
Hugs and Kisses sis 🥰🌺🤙!!
It's been years for me. We used to have 3 horses when we lived in Colorado. I used to have the neighborhood kids ride behind me and we'd take them around the loop. It was fun!🤗😘💞
Nice horses caravan ;)
The horses were huge!!!
Very large animals @silversaver888!!😀
The Northwest is a hot spot for Clydesdale ranches! During the Northwest Fair the horse barns are full with these beautiful extremely large horses!
During the wagon exhibition, six to eight full Clydesdale teams race around the Arena at full speed on a collision course with the other wagon teams!
Very impressive white knuckle driving!!!😇
A must see each year!!!
I've got to see one!!!
Must be impressive, @silvertop😀
We have owned horses @silversaver888, but being up close to a Clydesdale is very impressive!😀
What a wonderful parade and piece of history on how they came about. The horses themselves are such a beautiful piece of horseflesh! I think the draft horses are stunning, with all their trademark markings, total strength, and their gentle demeanor.
This was a wonderful post. I have a great love for these things, horses, parades and beauty! Thank you so much for showing them off. As an aside, my sister-in-law, who lives in California right across the road from a man that keeps Budweisers retired horses. I'm sure he is not the only one, but, Budweiser pays for everything, to ensure their horses have the best retirement ever.
That says a lot for the company.
