📷 Artistic weaving in Kuban

Until the beginning of the XX century, weaving was one of the most popular domestic activities of many peoples. Almost all types of woven fabric in Russia were created on a manual wooden loom.

Even in those early years, craftswomen mastered a variety of techniques, and many of them learned to create geometric patterns, ornaments, shapes and lines.

Weaving in Kuban has also been done for a long time and the main material for it was processed hemp or flax fibers, goat and sheep wool.

On such looms, they wove cloth and sewed clothes from it. Women's and men's Cossack costumes are still kept in our museums.

The basis of the women's costume was a shirt. It was made from homespun cloth. Of course, the cuffs, collar, and hem have always been decorated with original embroidery.

Each color and pattern has a specific meaning. So the most common elements of the ornament: rhombuses, oblique crosses, octagonal stars, rosettes.

If you are interested, I recommend watching this video.

The oldest combination of colors is white and red. Red is a symbol of fertility, and white is a symbol of peace and purity. In those days, all dyes were made from natural materials, and threads for embroidery were also colored with berry juice.

Traditionally, folk embroidery in Kuban is dominated by ornaments with lush flowers and berries. A characteristic feature is the symmetrical construction of the pattern.

An interesting post! I'm planning to buy a loom like the woman is weaving the rug on, only a bit smaller. And I'm interested in the technique with the quadratic discs for weaving the colorful ribbons - so low tech but with the most beautiful results :)
