It's time to destroy the world: What are your favorite "end of the world" movies? [TOP 03]

(Edited)

This publication was also written in SPANISH and PORTUGUESE.

This month, the theme of the competition is very interesting (more than it usually is) because it is about Cinema and talking about the Seventh Art (in any genre) is always something very pleasurable for me (because I love movies!)... However, making lists is a very complicated task because I always think I'm doing some kind of injustice, haha!

Over the decades, Cinema has used the end of the world as the main plot of its scripts and the threats are as diverse as possible and in my TOP 03 this month, I brought some examples that show this very clearly. Choosing only three was difficult, but I think I did a good job because the movies really put the "destruction of the world" issue at the forefront.

#01. 28 Days Later (2002)

IMDb

As the first threat, I will highlight this movie that has as its main theme an incurable virus that is transforming the population into totally strange, deformed and dangerous human beings. In the midst of this scenario, a few survivors try to find a way out to survive the other problems that are yet to come (which, by the way, are many and complex).

What I find most interesting in this film is how it uses the virus to enhance the destruction of the world through the extinction of human life. The process of transforming people into monsters is very striking and shows how the world can be destroyed in so many different ways. In addition, it requires a little more attention from the viewer to follow the story.

#02. Independence Day (1996)

IMDb

The planet being invaded by aliens is something that Cinema loves to do (it's almost like a cinematic fetish). This is one of the types of favorite threats that writers love to write and show the world how invasive and dangerous the inhabitants of other planets can be. In this case, it is better to be careful with who comes from outside.

Aliens are a threat that remains imminent, because many people still believe in this possibility and the unfriendly way in which they are shown to human beings is the best part of this movie because they make it clear that everything is a matter of perspective. The destruction of the world, in this case, depends on how the aliens see the inhabitants of the planet Earth.

#03. Armageddon (1998)

IMDb

I want to start by saying that I don't think this movie is good (quite the contrary), but it fits perfectly into the contest's proposal this month because humans are being threatened by a gigantic meteor that is on a collision course with planet Earth. The only hope is a group of professionals who go to space to "fight" this threat and save the planet. So, there's a huge mission ahead.

This is one of the most interesting ways of destruction that Cinema has ever done because it has the power to show how small people are in relation to everything that is out there. The visual side of the film is also great and shows in detail the destructive potential that a meteor can cause (which is quite big and dangerous in so many ways).

So, that's it folks and I hope everyone has a good end to the world, haha! May the best posts win! ;)

See ya!

That's quite a foreboding tagline on Independence Day given we are in August...perhaps 2020 will see another major setback? ;) Great choice on that one as I don't think anyone mentioned that one yet. 28 Days Later is one I thought I watched, but now I'm not sure that I did. Better add that one to the list as I always seem to keep going from each of these movie months! Armageddon really was a bit silly in some ways, but gosh what a mega hit. You can't think about the movie without thinking about the Aerosmith song that was equally, if not more popular. Good luck as always!

Yes Mr Agent! Good to see you're back to prove a point, can you reclaim your monthly winning streak again?

Great to see 28 days later in the list as well, it made my Top 3 and agree that it's a classic in the genre - can't believe it's nearly 20 years old though- what!

Independence Day is a sleeping giant this month I think! Was waiting to see if someone would nominate it and could put you in good stead. Who doesn't think an alien invasion would bring the end of the world like the way it was portrayed in this movie!

I agree with your take on Armageddon, did seem a bit cheesy but nothing quite like a mindless action film - we still love you Bruce!

Good luck in the contest this month but maybe we can hold back on destroying the world seeing as we need to host the dpoll later in the month hey? 😄

Great choices @wiseagent

28 Days Later was ground breaking for that genre of movie. Running zombies was a genius move by Danny Boyle.

Independence Day and Armageddon are guilty pleasures of mine. Great soundtracks and good old harmless fun.
