Designing mobile app - Trends, features, catches, advices... no.2

Aloha to all of you, my gorgeous creative munchkins!

I hope you are all doing fine, relaxed, happy... :))

In the last post we talked about knowing your customer's needs and wishes, improving customer experience, and personalization. In this post I will talk about something so important and when you adopt this knowledge, you should see a big difference in the way that you think about your product or service hence your customers or clients.

And I must mention @chekohler who pointed out, in my last post, that today's topic is very important. Thank you very much and I hope I will justify some of my thoughts with my knowledge and experience. You be the judge 😎

Today we will be circling around MVP or minimum viable product. What is MVP, you say. Buckle up and read carefully cause this bumble potato post will enlight you 😜

Many of you think that it is logical that your product, service, in this situation your mobile application has to have every single information, all of the possible features and all of those details YOU would want to have in an app. So you start making assumptions and predictions for your project and your application starts to look like gypsies market.
We have a saying in my country and it says that the assumption is a mother of all mess-ups. Oh, what a bitter truth.

The plan here is to turn the new page and start with just enough features to satisfy your EARLY CUSTOMERS or ADOPTERS. When you manage to do that, you will start to notice reactions and will start to get first feedback.

Early customers or adopters are people who are willing to engage with your new app and are going to give you precious feedback that will guide you through almost all of your next steps. You might start to develop your app with one specific idea but early adopters might change your mind and also the direction of your project. Listen carefully and pay attention because those informations will help your project to grow with the right idea and in the end, your app will be required so much more.

In my next post, I will talk about early adopters, alpha and lead customers, beta testing, focus groups, and so many other personas and techniques that will help you grow in the right direction. Now we can go back to the MVP.

MVP will give you space for mistakes and early adopters are so much more forgiving because they know they are looking at an early prototype, they want to make an opinion which will help you to avoid the accumulation of unnecessary content and feature in your project.

I want to point out more virtues regarding to this topic and there are plenty. Many of us don't have a large budget and while releasing MVP, you don't really need one. You are testing your service with real customers without cashing out a large amount of money for every part of your development. Also, you don't need to develop your project to 100% to do this. This is actually really smart because you don't want to develop something that will not succeed in the end. That is why I started to talk about growing with your audience therefore developing with their help.

The question is how do you manage to develop a minimum viable product.

  1. Well, first you have to align your MVP idea with your business objective or purpose which you got from researching market needs and customer wishes (see my last post).

  2. From there you will know more about your focus group and how should their journey (User journey) looks like. User journey is very important because you can see your app through their eyes.

  3. The next step is identifying all of the problems and possible improvements through analysis, research, feedback...

  4. Of course, when you have problems you must find a solution to it. Solutions can be found also in the variety of analyses and those depend on the type of project you are on.

  5. The story ending is very important. You must know your user and every step they can make to ease this part for them. The last step is not unimportant and you can lose a large number of users by screwing this part up.

There is so much to talk about. If you want me to be more detailed, write it in the comment and I will make a post to help you to get those details that are so precious. I don't want to lose your interest by writing everything here because I know you :)) you do not like to read. Maybe I should start making videos 🤓 jk

I am digital marketing manager by trade and was a mobile app product owner for a bit so UX was the one department I had plenty of fights with lol you guys can really be perfectionists at times. Loving the chaos of your work station looks like there's some serious work going on there

I think an MVP is where a lot of startups fail they either try to over engineer and bring to market something that is overly complex and don't understand you need to grow with the user or they release something so shocking they push users away and have to refactor and relaunch, so it's not an easy thing to get right, striking the balance is tough

What is your method of user testing like?

Oh, it is a fight! You said it right. The first college I finished was a design of market information and now I am finishing digital marketing so I know what are you talking about.

I don't know why but it seems to be harder to work while everything is clean around me. Maybe it's just in my head but there are some psychological facts about that.

Regarding MVP, I so much agree. There are a million things to do wrong and on the other hand, there are users who wants to help you so you don't make a million mistakes. I don't know why people still do those mistakes. Maybe they are so confident and sure their app is going to work just fine.

I will write about user testing in my next post and also will explain everything and show some steps. I will tag you so I can answer your question nicely.

Lol perhaps you're one that thrives in creative chaos funny that your creativity is about organising things best for the user yet you're work station seems unorganised, life isn't without its ironies and paradoxes I suppose

Totally, I had to learn that lesson the hard way and it took me well over 2 years to finally release a workable MVP and 4 tries but we did it and now running for 2 years trying to grow the site, ah fun times.

Ah looking forward to it, really enjoying getting into your thought processes

Oh, life is full of irony and paradoxes, I agree with you totally. That's just life :) nothing is absolute.

I wish you all the luck with your site! Work paid off I hope so. Sometimes it takes several tries and 100 mistakes but that's normal and inevitable I think. People change, their habits change, trends change all the time... Mistakes are just there to show you what not to do and help you understand your audience.
