Introduction to Corolla/bitter cucumber,

Karala/bitter cucumber(karalla, uchcha, uchche) is a type of fruit and vegetable. In English it is called Balsam pear, alligator pear, bitter gourd, bitter melon, bitter cucumber etc. The scientific name of the plant is Momordica charantia which is a type of herbaceous plant belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae. Besides, the names 'Gaya' derived from the original language of Okinawa and 'Caravela' derived from Sanskrit are also common in English. Karla is native to the Indian subcontinent, which was taken to China in the 14th century.

Description of bitter cucumber,

Karala/bitter cucumber tastes bitter and its body is full of warts like thorns. Mature fruits are elongated, green in color when raw, orange or red when ripe, 12-25 cm (5-10 in) long, 5-6 cm wide. Cut the banana and dip it in salt water to reduce the bitterness. This South Asian vegetable is now spread all over the world, especially in the tropics.

Karla/ bitter cucumber tree cultivation,

Karala/bitter cucumber tree is a member of Cucurbitaceae family. It is an annual perennial creeper. Male and female flowers are monoecious in the same tree.Karla seeds are sown in clay soil at a depth of 2.5-5 cm and at a distance of 90-120 cm.

Benefits of bitter cucumber

Its juice is very useful in preventing allergies. It is also good for diabetics. It is possible to control blood sugar by drinking karla juice regularly every day. Regular consumption of karla juice cures arthritis pain. According to Ayurveda, karla is anthelmintic, expectorant and cholagogue. Karla also has antiseptic power. Applying leaf juice on the wound site and washing the wound with boiled water, the wound dries in a few days. If you have allergies, you can cure it by playing two teaspoons of its juice twice. Karala is also very useful in skin diseases. In addition, jaundice and liver disease, if there is an aversion to food, the taste comes from playing karla.

*Land preparation and sowing method

Uchche and karla seeds,*

Can be woven directly into the material (40x40x40 cm). In this case at least 2 seeds should be sown per female or 15-20 days old seedlings produced in polybags should be planted. In case of extinction, females should be spaced 1.0 m in a row and 1.5 m in a row. In order to sow female seeds or plant seedlings, it should be prepared at least 10 days before by applying the prescribed fertilizer to the female.
