The Art Plant - La usina del arte
I remember as a child passed through this place countless times. At that time my father's work was very close and it was usual for me to go looking for him. I evoked the building as something immense and with a lot of noise inside, it seems to me that it scared my childhood mind a bit at that time and despite the fact that my parents had explained to me that they generated the electricity we had at home there, it was intriguing and somewhat gloomy, full of soot and always surrounded by an incessant activity of trucks, people, equipment and above all the persistent and annoying noise that came from its bowels.
At that time it was a plant owned by Italo-Argentina de Electricidad, an Italian company that owned several generating stations, substations, and other buildings scattered throughout the city of Buenos Aires, at some point the company ceased its activities, and the building was renamed Don Pedro de Mendoza, in homage to the first founder of what is now the city of Buenos Aires, the street where it is located also bears the name of the first "advanced of the Río de la Plata". Some years later the activity ceased and the plant was abandoned, I do not know the reasons.
But at the end of the 2010s, the city government decided to recover that beautiful building and provide it with what is necessary to turn it into a first-class cultural space for all the inhabitants of the city and also stop tourists who wanted to spend a few days enjoying of art and audiovisual shows.
Although the recovery and modernization are magnificent, the exterior façade has been fully preserved and demonstrates the beauty and splendor of its early 20th-century architecture, reminiscent of a Florentine palace.
This Saturday we had the opportunity to visit it thanks to the invitation of my son who was taking our grandson to enjoy a couple of activities for babies up to 3 years old.
I was surprised to see it in that state so well achieved, respecting the industrial style, but providing it with all the advances and comforts that a place with these objectives should have. Another more complete visit was pending to be able to observe and enjoy its music rooms, the great symphony hall with a capacity for 1,200 people, art galleries, a museum, and another enormous number of places especially suitable for enjoying all the expressions of art that are Many.
I am no longer afraid to go there.
Recuerdo de niño haber pasado en innumerables oportunidades por este lugar, en aquel entonces el trabajo de mi padre quedaba muy cerca y era habitual para mi ir a buscarlo. El edificio lo evoco como algo inmenso y con mucho ruido en su interior, me parece que un poco asustaba mi mente infantil de aquel entonces y pese a que mis padres me habían explicado que allí generaban la electricidad que teníamos en casa, era intrigante y algo sombría, llena de ollín y siempre rodeado de una incesante actividad de camiones, gente, equipos y por sobre todas las cosas el ruido persistente y molesto que salía de sus entrañas.
En aquel entonces era una usina propiedad de la Italo-Argentina de electricidad, una compañía italiana que poseía varias estaciones generadoras, subestaciones y otros edificios esparcidos por la ciudad de Buenos Aires, en algún momento la compañía cesó sus actividades y el edificio pasó a llamarse Don Pedro de Mendoza, en homenaje al primer fundador de lo que hoy es la ciudad de Buenos Aires, la calle en la que está ubicada también lleva el nombre del primer “adelantado del Río de la Plata”. Algunos años después la actividad cesó y la usina quedo abandonada, ignoro los motivos.
Pero a fines de la década de 2010 el gobierno de la ciudad decidió recuperar ese bello edificio y dotarlo de lo necesario para convertirlo en un espacio cultural de primer nivel para todos los habitantes de la ciudad y también parar los turistas que desearan pasar algunas jornadas disfrutando del arte y los espectáculos audiovisuales.
Si bien la recuperación y modernización es magnífica, la fachada exterior ha sido conservada en su totalidad y demuestra la belleza y esplendor de su arquitectura de principios del XX, con reminiscencias de un palacio florentino.
Este sábado tuvimos la oportunidad de ir a visitarla gracias a la invitación de mi hijo que llevaba a nuestro nieto a disfrutar de un par de actividades para bebés de hasta 3 años.
Me sorprendí de verla en ese estado tan bien logrado, respetando el estilo industrial, pero dotándola de todos los adelantos y comodidades que un lugar con estos objetivos debe tener. Quedó pendiente otra visita más completa para poder observar y disfrutar de sus salas de música, la gran nave sinfónica con capacidad para 1200 personas, galerías de arte, museo y otra enorme cantidad de lugares especialmente adecuados para complacerse de todas las expresiones del arte que son muchos.
Ya no tengo miedo de pasar por allí.
