Goth music: Taking a bit deeper look and some recommendations!

(Edited)

I'd be shamelessly lying if I said that I'm not deep down submerse in gothic art in general, I definitely am. Goth music is something that really grabs me by the heart, however. With that in mind I though it could be nice to write about some of my favorite artists in this genre, so, if you're interested in getting to know a bit more about this artistic wave, dive right in. If you've never heard of it or experimented it, give it a try! Sometimes we like things that we'd never think we'd like, right?
I decided to focus on some more modern Darkwave bands here, but I think it's worth to make some recommendations focusing on the 80's Post-punk classics! Maybe I'll do that later also!

Ian Curtis, from Joy Division. One of the greatest voices of the Post-punk movement.

Darkwave started in the 80's, it was the middle line between Post-punk and Electronic Music. Contemporary Darkwave does a perfect job summarizing this middle line, since it's characteristic sound can be described as a more electronic Post-punk, still keeping it's original characteristics, which would be the use of "cold feeling" progressions of chords, dark and poetic lyrics and even a bit of inspiration in classical gothic literature, and, above all, the signature melodic bass lines, a composing style created by Post-punk bands like Bauhaus and Joy Division, for example.
Darkwave music is, overall, a little obscurity-oriented and it runs between dark coldness and romantic sentimentality. From the 80's until now, the experimentation inside this genre has been growing a lot, modern artists are a bit more inclined to take inspiration from experimental bands that came before them, from things like Pink Floyd to Einstürzende Neubauten.

Nick Cave, from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and Blixa Bargeld, from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Einstürzende Neubauten.

Recommendations!

I chose some of my favorite bands to show you here. Here they are:

Ritual Howls:

Ritual Howls is a trio from Detroit, they range from post-apocalyptic depressed people dancefloor music to dark romanticism in basically all of their albums. My personal favorite is "Rendered Armor", released in 2019.

Forever Grey:

They're a duo from Michigan and the greatest in this list when it comes to atmospheric music. Combining introspective lyrics and dark instrumentation with the "characteristically goth" deep voice. Personal favorite: Alabaster Chamber(released in 2016).

This Cold Night:

This Cold Night is a one-man-project from Texas. The music is filled with a characteristic sentimentalism, a bit of pessimistic poetry in the lyrics and a great work when it comes to the repetitive yet melodically creative bass lines. My favorite album is "We of Like Minds", released in 2014.
