The first day

Mary liked to make up stories, everything she heard she exaggerated, with her you never knew if what she said was true or a figment of her wild imagination. So when she told me that something big was afoot in Paul's lab, I didn't pay much attention.

She didn't even work at Paul's, but she did know a cleaning person. And it was that person who told her that the labs were about to make a discovery that would forever change the way we look at things...

The days went by and Mary was in charge of increasing the rumors about the great discovery of the laboratory, one day she said that they had discovered the formula for eternal life; another, that they knew how to make us invisible...in short...

One afternoon Paul invited Mary and me to play a game of Scrabble at his house. Nobody could beat him, he always found a way to combine impossible letters, but we had a good time.

Shortly before the game was over, he told us that the lab was putting the finishing touches on his great discovery. Mary looked me in the eye as if to say: "You didn't believe me...! I looked back at her, nodding apologetically....

Paul told us that they were asking for volunteers to do some tests, and that he had thought of us. He assured us that there would be no risks to take and that we might have one of life's great experiences. Without much thought Mary and I agreed, we had full confidence in our mutual friend. We arranged to meet for the following Saturday afternoon...

When I arrived at Paul's house Mary was already there, both of them were listening to music at high volume. I knocked several times on the thin wooden door until Paul opened it. I sat down next to Mary and Paul turned off the sound system...

Without much ado he told us that in the lab they had developed a coffee blend that was able to transport people back to their childhood years and that so far all the volunteers had reported experiences from the first three years of life, a time when most people have no memories...He asked us if we were ready...Almost at the same time Mary and I said yes...

About ten minutes after drinking my coffee I felt the need to look at my hands, I looked at them and looked at them as if trying to understand what was that strange shape with five little fingers...

Suddenly I was suspended in the air, I was in front of a very dear face. She took me to her breast and I began to suckle. She kept saying things that I did not understand, but from the tone of her voice I knew she was happy....

That day was special, they had dressed me in lighter clothes and sat me in the chair of that thing that never stopped moving, and in which I always felt the wind touching my face...

I loved being there, sitting in my little chair, watching things suddenly appear and fade away, being left behind. I also liked to see the two faces in front of me, the one that was breastfeeding me and another one, also very dear to me, who was clutching a round object with her hands, and whose gaze was always forward...

We came to a place where the thing stopped. The dearest face took me in her arms, gave me a kiss on the cheek and began to say things I did not understand. He turned my face with his hands so that I could see an area where everything was the same color, that image impressed me, it was the first time I saw such a large surface.

But that image did not intimidate me, rather it was familiar to me. Somehow I felt that it was something similar to the place where I was before I saw the light, the sounds that I heard reminded me of that time where my eyes only saw patches of light and shadow...

They sat me on a soft and warm surface, I automatically looked for a way to grab that, and watched as it slid over my five little fingers. Then the other face took me in his arms, pressed me against his chest and took me with him into the unicolor immensity, I felt the movement of something warm caressing my skin. My face smiled, he lifted me up and brought me back into that soft, warm and familiar thing....

When the coffee wore off, I thought for a long time about the experience I had had. It took me a while to put the images in order, but after a few minutes I understood everything, I realized that I had relived the first day when my mother and father took me to see the sea, I was maybe one year old at the time...

That prodigious formula based on coffee had allowed me to find the lost memories inside me...

Thank you for your time.

You had a happy memory right there. Initially, I thought you were transported to the first few days of being a baby and everyone is cooing and handling you with delicate care. Great read @irvinc

Amazing storytelling dear!
I love how as a baby you didn't understand your surroundings and only articulated them as a blur of coloured backgrounds.

Imagine if this was actually real. I would absolutely love to try it out!
Nicely written dear!

Well, that's a day one should never forget! As children, everything is new for us. The sea, however, is such an impressive view even for adults who have seen plenty of amazing things in their lives, but who have never seen the vast and blue ocean.

Nice read, @irvinc ☕❤️

I was lucky enough to live for a few years in La Guaira, there I learned to love the sea, for me it has always been a great experience to feel that powerful presence. Thank you very much for stopping by and commenting, dear @marlyncabrera . A big hug from Maracay.

Greetings @irvinc, what a beautiful story, it made me think about what memory as a child I may have and I left at 4 years old, but if I must go further back, it must be having that familiar feeling from our parents. A hug.

My most distant memories come from a picture where I am about four years old, before that there is nothing in my memory. Thank you very much for stopping by and commenting dear @cautiva-30 . A big hug from Maracay.

This made me smile a whole lot- how wonderful it would be to recall the sensations of being only a year old! You bring us into this experience beautifully here, I really do think being a baby must be a lot like you describe. This read filled my mind with sweet memories of what my children must have experienced when they were tiny, what a great story! 💚

I'm glad you liked it. My mother once told me that I was taken to the sea at a very young age and I suddenly began to imagine what it must have been like. To be able to remember the life of those years must be wonderful. Thank you very much for stopping by and for the support dear @grindan . A big hug from Maracay.

Ingenious your story @irvinc. How I would like to try that formula and relive those unique and unrepeatable moments of that first year of life that involves the discovery of the world.

Thank you for this rewarding read in the early hours of the morning. Warm greetings and have a great day. 🙂
