Greetings to this charming community, where we all share a common bond: coffee. No matter in which part of the planet we are, those of us who are part of this space agree that coffee is more than a drink, it is company, pause, and memory.

In this publication I am participating in the Prompt of the week about an experience in some coffee shop about something in particular that ended up being the most memorable part of the visit.

In Cuba currently, in almost any place where one is, the most recurrent topic in conversations is the energy crisis that the country is going through. A situation that has transformed routines, customs, and the way of living of Cubans, forcing us to adapt to unusual conditions of large blackouts and long periods without electric power. This matter, besides worrying everyone, also affects the environment and the places we go to: workplaces, schools, stores, and of course, coffee shops. That is how it happened in the Amelia Coffee Shop located in the Miramar Business Center, in the Playa municipality.

This place I like very much for its location and for the decoration that conveys an artistic and cozy atmosphere. It is a small coffee shop, adorned with paintings and elements of Cuban visual arts, which give it an intimate and special air.

That day, the memorable thing was not the usual conversation of the clients, mostly workers of the nearby real estate offices, but that the electricity was coming and going at will. All the equipment used to cook and prepare coffee is electric, so every time the power went out, everything was put on pause. The place has electric backup, but it took time to start, and during those minutes we stayed waiting, in half-light, sharing the same silence interrupted by comments. So having a coffee or ordering something to eat became a longer wait than usual.

And that was the moment when everyone took advantage to talk, or complain, about the main topic, the lack of electricity, and the waitresses stayed aside chatting until the power came back and everything resumed its usual rhythm.

The moment perhaps was not memorable in the sense of a great event, but it was in the way it gave us the opportunity to take the time to share without so much rush. In the end, the most valuable thing of that visit was not the coffee itself, although it was delicious, but the shared pause where the wait turned into memory.
