Beyond the Ordinary: How a Chance Encounter Led to a Priceless Brotherhood

I am not sure who ever walks up to a person and says, "Hi, I'd like to be your friend." and that would be the beginning of their friendship. For me, the relationships I have with people that I truly call "friends" never started that way. Rather, our first encounters would have been something quite ordinary, but then something along the lines of our interactions happens, personalities are revealed more, and then gradually, something "not ordinary" happens: friendship.

It had been quite a while since I had been to church, as I had been away for a long time because of industrial training that was required of me. Before leaving for the industrial training, I had joined the church musicians so I could play the guitar for the church, and so when I returned, I hoped to do just that.

There were some new faces this time around, and one of those faces was that of one particular young man. At that time, I had no idea what instrument he played and didn't get to know for a while until the Sunday he did play.

We were all in church this very Sunday, but it was my first time actually playing on stage this day. My time to play came, and later on, it was time for this other individual to play the guitar for a different session. It was then that I knew he also played the guitar. And I was like, "Oh, really? Cool."

Fast forward to much after we introduced ourselves to each other and got acquainted with ourselves; he then came up with some concepts that sounded very much like something I was outrightly going to be uninterested in, owing to the then recent scam that I had experienced. He was going to tell me about Hive.

I play the guitar, and so he probably felt it was going to be something of value I could share about this "place" he was going to tell me about and as well be incentivized for sharing that value. And so therefore, he thought to initiate me into this world of his, about which I was going to be unenthusiastic.

I didn't want to and couldn't be impolite and seem pessimistic about new ideas and possible means of having a new stream of income, so I thought to give him a listen. If eventually I deem it "just another scam," I would have at least done well to keep an open mind at first. But then, everything from his perspective sounded too good to be true, with the majority seeming complex because of the blockchain terms I was just learning. However, this man did something I would consider out-of-the-ordinary, which then began the first weaving of the tapestry of my new life in this space.

He asked to spend the night at my apartment. This was solely for the purpose of taking enough time to enlighten me about this "Hive" he was talking about, to tell me what it really was about, how it worked, and to create an account for me. I considered this to be weird, as we were still very much strangers to one another. This was the 15th of February, 2022.

He indeed came over for what he had aimed to achieve. Rather than spend the night playing the guitar and jamming together, this man used his precious time for me—time that he could have used for something productive and beneficial to himself. And that was how it all began.

My account was created that night, but nothing happened on it for two months. No intro post, no nothing. But it wasn't new to him—that unenthusiastic behavior of mine, I mean—and so he made sure it wasn't too far from my mind by reminding me regularly. And so, one day, I thought to at least show some interest as a token of appreciation to this person who had taken his time to show me something prospective. After all, it wasn't going to cost me a penny, and so I created that intro post. Little did I know that we'd grow into something beyond and share something priceless: brotherhood.

From mentorship on this new space for a couple of months to playing the guitar together, and then to even more. It turned out that we shared a lot in common—more than we could have initially imagined. We are even often mistaken for twins everywhere. How interesting, right? And also, we happened to be in the same department at school, although at different levels.

Apparently, we share similar opinions and perspectives on certain matters. And from thereon, we grew closer and closer. Now, we are doing things together - like reading books.

With his immense influence in my life, I have become a much different person, been inspired as well, and even expanded my circle of friends, as we now even have mutual friendships with other people.

They say good friends must clash at one point or another and that this would be a test of their relationship. As much as I agree with that, I believe that good friends, if they are truly good friends, should understand the other person's values, boundaries, and personality—even if we learn new things every day—and then come to a compromise. That compromise should be to bring the relationship forward.

This is a relationship brother that I have come to cherish and value. And because of him, I can say I am a version of myself I would have been different from without it—a version I am grateful for.
