Wednesday Walk | Visit to Flower Market in District One, HCMC

Every year before the start of TET which is actually Vietnam's Lunar New Year, the parks in HCMC will be filled with flowers. The city council would put aside a large fund just to decorate the parks in the CBD area. This is after all the heart of the city and many people would come here to take their photos. Unfortunately, due to the global pandemic, even the city council had to cut down their budgets. I have thus far only seen one part of the city decorated while the rest seemed ordinary. However, I realised it's not just here, everywhere is affected just the same.

The Flower Market near Le Lai Street is famous for it's yearly sale of flowers to the locals. People would come here to purchase pots of flowers to decorate either their officers or homes, part of the welcoming TET spirit. These flowers come is varieties of color and types; sunflowers, roses, lilies, daisies, herb plants and etc. The sizes also varies from small to really large ones that is as tall as I am.

I have been looking forward to visit the Flower Market since 2 weeks ago but it wasn't up until last weekend. It was just the same as how I remembered it last year, just that there weren't so many vendors as before. Even the number of people visiting and buying has dropped significantly. It is sad to see how the entire pandemic has impacted everyone and that even the nurseries are feeling the heat of it during this one time of the year that is their biggest pay check ever.

Of course, I walked around the entire park and took many photos; I assure you I wasn't the only one doing it. But, I was smarter. I actually bought along with me a selfie stick to get better angles of the entire area. But, no videos! Videos and me don't make a good couple at all 😆

This is one part of the park that is facing the main road. Vehicles that drive along can easily just park their motorbikes and walk over. Just look at all these flower pots. Isn't it just amazing to see all these beautifully bloomed flowers. I was thinking of buying one pot and decorate my home but language is a challenge here and when I did understand them, I realised the price is pretty exorbitant especially for the larger pots. The smaller ones are quite reasonably price at VND50,000 per pot. Eventually, I did not buy anything as I was planning to do some grocery shopping after my walkabout and carrying a flower pot just doesn't seemed to be the right idea.

By now, the Flower Market would've started to clear up already as many locals have returned back to their home towns. I'm not sure what happens if these flowers are not fully sold; not like they can keep it, right. Maybe sell dirt cheap so that they don't need to carry these large pots back to the nursery. That would be additional transportation cost.

Still a nice time walking around the park. More photos to share in my other post 😘

The flower market looks amazing, @ireenchew. I would love to stroll through and buy some fresh flowers! It is too cold where I live, and it will be three more months before we see flowers!

It is indeed amazing @jayna though it was way much more better last year. I was kind of disappointed and sad when I saw the vendors.. well, in a way I do pity these folks. They probably work the entire year for just this one week to see all their hard work pay.
