A little bit of sea, a little bit of mountain - Eastern Crete

Isn't it great when you think that you are going to have the most boring day and it turns out to be an amazing excursion out of nowhere? This happened a few days ago. I had two appointments on the same day, one early in the morning and one late in the afternoon, both in the same city about 45km from our village. And I had no idea what to do in the meanwhile in a city that gets too hot to do anything during daytime :)

Everything changed when @fotostef and Markos, our canine companion, decided to join me and wander around together without any specific plan.

If you wonder how Markos looks when he understands that we are getting ready to go and there is big chance he is coming with us, below is the answer. Eyes concentrated to the target (us) and an attitude of there is no better dog than me, I am going to be an angel!

When we got to the city and after the first appointment, a nice breeze and some clouds on the sky contributed to the decision that going a bit further could be nice. And this way, we visited Elounda and Plaka, super famous touristic destinations of the area. We had a nice swim in the sea and then we took the way up to the mountain to avoid the hordes of tourists.

The place is wonderful on its own as you can see from the view from above. Crystal clear waters and the wildness of the Cretan landscape.

I should mention that this is a place for wealthy tourists, not a place that someone can easily afford. The best beaches are now private and luxurious villas with pools and tennis courts pop up. As well as ugly huge resorts. And they are still building more...

IMG_8006.jpg

The main attraction is this small island that you can visit by boat. This settlement was used as a leper colony, the island of the living dead. I find it very sad, so I've never been there...

IMG_8002.jpg

Looking for some adventure we hit the road, but which way? While I was taking photos of the amazing view, @fotostef, who hates google maps, was studying the real map :)

IMG_8021.jpg

The view was amazing! With the clouds and their shadows constantly moving, it was changing all the time.

IMG_8026.jpg

Then we visited a small village, Fourni, and I fell in love!
Narrow streets...

IMG_8040.jpg

Proofs of life...

Old charming houses :)

IMG_8036.jpg

Nice taverns...

IMG_8042.jpg

And wells everywhere, in and out of the village. An impressive fact for the area. Here everything is green and the plants are thriving!

Windmills just outside the village.

IMG_8048.jpg

And the green of the gardens was enviable :)

It's always the details that steal my heart :)
IMG_8047.jpg

The view as we were heading back to the city for my evening appointment was not bad either :)

Haha, yes! How can you resist to these eyes??? We are talking about the art of manipulation at its best :))

This area is about 1-1,5 hour from our place and we had never till now visited these mountain villages! They are more than Fourni, but this one stole my heart!

Thank you for your beautiful comment!

To paraphrase you, if I may, I can choose to read something uninteresting or read an amazing one. I chose well, of course, I expected it to be so.

The story of your walk and, for me, especially the photos. It was a joy, I don't even know what more to say so as not to spoil the beauty with my flat words.

The olive grove, the island, and the sea, Markos, the painted pots made from boxes in which there was oil, the village... all of them, gave me great pleasure to see. I remember Markos and his look because I know this well. I also had a dog who immediately felt that I was going to take him for a walk, and he immediately showed his joy, the purest joy.

Thank you!

Thank you dear @bluemoon for the super encouraging and uplifting comment!

I remember you had a Labrador, right? I simply can't resist to this look! They know well what they are doing!!! Well, this time he was not an angel as he had tried (successfully) to convince me, but it is (almost) always fun to have him with us. What I also like is that when you are with a dog it is easier for people to start talking to you, had you noticed that?

It is a beautiful place! I could move right now to that mountain village :)

I hope you and Magda are very well! I have missed the last posts but I will catch up one of these days :)

Yes, there was also a Labrador who really liked the food. You're right, they know what to do to get what they want. Their true, unbridled joy is hard to find in humans. Of course, I've noticed it helps with human interaction. I remember in my youth I met a few girls walking my dog in the park...

We're fine, thank you. I, likewise, haven't read many of your posts but, fortunately, your posts can be read anytime, and remain enjoyable, and I want to read them when I have enough time to enjoy them.

Glad to hear from you, thank you!

The narrative of your walk, and the photographs in particular for my consideration. It was a pleasure, and I don't even know what else to say in order to avoid diminishing the experience with my lackluster language.

Fourni looks so cute and the wells are clearly a bonus for the gardens. Glad you had a nice time. The views are gorgeous. Every time I read your posts I want to book a ticket to Greece..

Yes, please book a ticket!!!

I absolutely loved Fourni, I could see me there! I was looking at the gardens and I was so jealous, haha! Cause everywhere I go, first I look at the gardens and plants. I am pretty sure you do the same :) Plus mushrooms :))

Haha yes I do! Is it expensive to buy there?

I have no idea. But it is about 20' from the expensive resorts, so I wouldn't expect very low prices :)
