An Apple a Day... - still life
The saying goes, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". Fruit have long been associated with good health and fertility. Some fruit such as apples have even been known as the fruit of the gods, granting them immortality as with the Norse myths.

While a deceptively simple image, three apples resting on white boards, when it came time to paint it, there are many surprising details to take care of.
This has been a demonstration for my online art students, showing how you move through image development to the final painting. I've already started on a new still life, for which I am recording a video to show and explain the painting development. I'll be posting about that when it's complete.

I know there was a fair bit of work between those two but escalating quickly is more amusing ;D

Normally I wouldn't even do a value study and just dive straight in. I have an online student that I am guiding along, so I've had to introduce intermediate steps to train him to "see". At first he was a bit doubtful about that, thinking it was not so important. But now he's really starting to appreciate where I'm guiding him and realising, it won't a few simple workshops to get there.
The devil is in the details as they say, and this is also true for painting realism. The solution is to ignore the details in the beginning, focus on the big picture (pun) and only in the latter stages, attend to details, if at all.
