10 Minute Pencil Sketch While I Slept

Mega Skills With The Ol' #2 Pencil

This is a 10 minute sketch that my wife Amanda made of me while I was taking a power nap.

It was July 13th of 2006 - almost exactly 14 years ago. We had just met, actually! I had only been hanging out with her for a month or so. I must have dozed off for a quick nap when my future life partner decided to do a quick sketch of me.

At the time I still had no idea that she could even draw!

In my 20s, I could sleep at the drop of a hat.

When I woke up, she was still messing with it and I said something like,

Holy crap! I was only out for like 15 minutes!

She corrected me by stating that it had only been about 10 minutes and she wasn't done. But she went ahead and stopped anyway. It seems kind of funny to me now, since she is a professional artist who does this sort of thing every day for a living.

Here's a photo of my gnarly face back then. It's a few days before the sketch was drawn, for reference.

A lot of people think that artists just fart work out through some magical talent that they were born with. I believe that most people are born with some level of artistic talent. It takes a lot of hard work and effort to develop the skills that professional painters and illustrators possess.

So the next time you meet an artist and appreciate their work, think about that fact. Instead of saying 'Wow! You are really talented!" Perhaps say something like "Wow! What skillful work!"

It may seem like a small thing, but it will mean a lot to them. Thanks for looking!

wow she has gained a lot of skill over the past 14 years. not that this one looks bad, but you can see the progress from this one to your last post.

My first thought was what happened to his hair but then I read the text :)

Keep in mind that this was a speed drawing and was done in 10 minutes! She was already very advanced back then. I'm going to see if I can find some of her proper work from back then and post it on here.

I'm sure she has improved over the years, though. Haha I would hope so!

@cryptopie so nice of you to say, my friend! May God bless you as well. I know you have a lot of physical difficulties these days, but did you ever do any drawing when you were younger? I was really into it when I was a kid, but kind of stopped doing it and lost any skills that I had.

I just lost the drive and the inspiration to even draw Sir @nuthman but maybe if my body pain especially my backbone would improve I might as well paint a few things in my mind Sir @nuthman

I am always impressed by people who can do that sort of thing. The artistic gene is something that flew right by me. I have pretty much zero of it in my body!

Haha! Well, I bet you have artistic ability perhaps in some other way that doesn't necessarily manifest on paper and pencil.

I completely agree! A lot of people see art and say oh so pretty. They fail to see the hours of work put into it. One drawing or painting can be 30 or 50 hours of work. And you might have 50 to 100 to 200 during a life time. Which can mean 10000 or more hours of work! Work. Not just talent. I think artists really deserve respect and people looking at art should try to make the effort to see beyond the nice colours and appreciate the hard work. Few do that. I have yet to meet someone in real life to genuinely appreciate my art and say to me "I can see the hours of work. I can see the dedication." I have not met someone in real life willing to promote and understand my art like I would wish. I congratulate you for doing this for your wife and supporting her. It is really a gesture of respect and appreciation for all of her hard work.

Art is not for everybody to understand and appreciate. Which after all is not that bad. Selection made through the way you see people react to your art tells you things about them too.
