nft going into space, kitclout tonguesout meets aliens

avatar

so back in like early december i saw this post over on the DeSo blockchain where i create all my NFTs that there was this opportunity to have your nft get sent into space. i really didn't think i would be able to get chosen to be a part of this "mission", since i only just started making nfts in november- but i felt like i had a pretty strong idea that could ~maybe~ get me chosen.

basically i am a little bit of an astronomy nerd, i've read a lot of carl sagan books, ofc i've watched all of the original Cosmos TV series. i knew about things that humans had sent on previous NASA missions that were meant to be "introductions" of the human race to any potential extraterrestrials that could intercept the spacecraft. the ones i knew of offhand were the Pioneer Plaques.

Pioneer Plaques @ Wikipedia

so i sent pretty long messages to the people in charge, i had this idea that if nfts were going into space, there should be some sort of message that is sent with them as a "hello" from humans. i'll talk about all of the various ideas in a minute but i figure i should get to my nft submission first.

set006-twitter.png

this nft is for sale though i am not actually planning to accept any bids before the mission, but the nft can be seen on the blockchain - https://diamondapp.com/posts/8f68f4af18dc7f27f150515d26746ea5ed36ef99c0bc203a08e8d3bc0f7a727d
(i am also not that worried about trying to sell this nft, i have begun using it as my avatar in many places, so perhaps i will keep her to myself LOL)

"KitClout TonguesOut #006 ~NFTs to Space~
This KitClout is on a mission to space on February 15th, 2022 and that's no joke. Imagine if YOUR PFP went to space. She is made only for true adventurers. Sporting a one-of-a-kind spacesuit, she has taken to space, unsure of what dangers are lurking. While returning home to Earth, she performs a routine check, our blue and green planet looming in her background. A mysterious craft appears. As it approaches, it projects an image onto her helmet. The Pioneer Plaque. Have the aliens finally found us?"

so the idea with what's happening here is that the pioneer plaques were sent into space back in the late 1970s. this kitclout is hanging out in space, when a mysterious spacecraft approaches and displays the image back at her. so, an alien intercepted it and is now coming back and beaming it out to show that they received the message. ~spooky!~

so i had a few ideas, originally i just thought sending the actual pioneer plaque image would be cool on its own. partially because i thought my "silly nft series" might not make the cut if i tried to use it, but then i figured once i heard back that i definitely had a chance to get into the mission, i should actually try to make a unique nft and not just send up the pioneer plaque. initially i was also worried that the plaques might not be kosher to use in an nft, but because the plaques were created by NASA, they are 100% in the public domain and i should have realized it because you can find t-shirts and all sorts of things being sold featuring the images.

i have other ideas that i know would be cool but i'm not maybe the perfect person to create them, but like creating a version of the plaque that would attempt to explain blockchain technology using basic math/physics building blocks to explain to aliens much in the same way the pioneer plaque would show aliens how to reach Earth from wherever the plaque would be intercepted.

the official project has a twitter page at https://twitter.com/NFTs2Space.

i'm not sure if tweets embed here, guess i'll find out, and hey it looks like it works:

https://twitter.com/NFTs2Space/status/1482041842124398606?s=20

anyway i don't want to ramble on and on, i do have plans to create some more nfts to go on the mission, so i'd love to share them here once i complete them.

i know if there are other people that would want to join, these missions are going to continue, so if you're interested in sending your own nfts to space, you can definitely contact them on twitter or leave a comment here and i can try my best to answer the questions.

i'm sure you may have questions like "what exactly is sent" "how is it sent" etc. because those were my questions too. i can help you get the answers, some of it is a little technical and i don't want to give the wrong info here so that's why i'm not trying to do that right now. :)

i think it's super cool and i'm also super happy to be sending up something that has a piece of carl sagan's legacy, that was my whole intention! i'm really excited about it, worst case the whole thing is just a lot of fun, so in my opinion there's nothing to lose! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

thanks! yes i would say if DeSo isn't the right place where i can maybe earn as a content creator in the end, at least i will always have this to be grateful to it for 😄

So many of your posts there are gold, and they'll live forever--but sure, going to space is hard to beat.

Congratulations, not only on getting your work accepted, but on producing such an amazing piece! I find a hint of humor in your work that I would like to see more often in science!

oh ty so much :)

my NFT "series" was started as a bit of a joke, mocking the idea of all of these nft projects i was seeing. whereas i like to hand-create anything that i would mint as an nft, i saw so many projects that were just playing like mr potato head with a bunch of features. now i do have a better understanding that there are SOME of those projects where a lot of work goes into the underlying artwork, but the whole idea of "rare traits" still makes me laugh a little because i mean sure you run this program which uses some kind of RNG to decide things, but like, you can run a program an infinite amount of times, right? LOL.

but so i started making NFTs in my own series that all use the same base image of myself. the first editions i will admit i didn't spend nearly as much time creating, but since then i put many hours into each one. certainly on this one which would (i hoped at the time, and now i know for sure) go into space, i spent a lot of time on!

the whole idea behind this project they're doing is to kind of create a bridge between the NFT community and the space community, which i am totally on board with. whether or not you think it might be slightly silly/maybe more symbolic than realistic (for instance i asked questions about like the NFT is technically not removable from the blockchain, so how do you send it into space, but i only asked this question to understand the mindset behind the project- personally i still think it's super cool to have the files sent to the ISS and out into space) - it's still a fun idea and i think there's this whole aspect of it that these nfts will be the "first" to have actually been sent into space as their true nfts; so maybe some people are looking for some type of fame.

i just thought it would make sense to include something of carl sagan's legacy since he is a big reason why i appreciate science and astronomy and i'm sure the same can be said for millions of other people!

and this community just seems perfect for this kind of project, it seems like people creating art here would probably be the exact people who would be interested in it!

at least for now the missions are using NFTs made on the DeSo blockchain, but i've posted about this before, i think any of us on any of these decentralized social media apps should be supportive of all others, why not? we should want to see at least one if not all of them survive- and maybe if there were enough interest here in the future, maybe they would end up doing a mission using NFTs on the hive blockchain.

i'm just a space nerd but also a computer nerd so i got super excited when i heard about this whole thing :D

I'm also a bit of a computer and astronomy (and other sciences) nerd, which is why the post caught my attention. I still haven't had the time to read up on this project yet (just had a pretty big snowstorm here), but I find this and projects like it fascinating. I'm a big advocate of space exploration... long term survival of our species DEPENDS on our ability to move away from this rock.

I haven't personally paid much attention to the NFT scene yet. It doesn't serve any immediate purpose for me, so I've paid just enough attention to know what people are talking about when I see the letters 'NFT' in a title. I do like art, though, and I find your work to be much more interesting that the 8-bit icons that are generating so much hype right now. I don't play the online card games, and I grew up broke, so I never really got in to collectibles. I see the usefulness of NFTs as a way to monetize art, and to really change the way that artists are paid, but that's not really my world.

Thanks for the long reply, I hope you find success wherever you are seeking it!

oh i am totally with you on the nft thing. i think there's an awful lot of junk people end up selling to make a quick buck off of people who don't know any better.

i look at my nfts as really a tip someone can give me to say they like what i do, and they also get an image that i put actual time into making (vs. letting a computer spin it up, though i'm sure many of those projects take a lot of work to put together- i appreciate them slightly more than i used to, what i very much disapprove of is when prices are set based on some arbitrary "rarity" of "traits" since.. that's some bogus malarkey in my opinion!~)

and i really think this whole "virtual world" that you can decorate is.. well, it's so second life. i think if you pay an exorbitant amount of money on a piece of art, it's something you want to show off, and- we're not livin' in the matrix yet everyone LOL

however, reasonably-priced NFTs and then having a virual gallery is all totally cool and awesome in my opinion. it's the price-gouging that i think is ridiculous!

ty!!

I dunno if it is just your style or not but some capitalization would make my internal editor not wince so much.

Also did you send your name to Mars through the NASA project that started doing that a few years ago?

it is just my style, i have written about it before that normally i would wince at the lack of capitalization but in terms of what i create it helps me to stay in this kind of silly character!

You have no idea how difficult it was to train myself not to capitalize when necessary, and also not to double space for each new sentence. If I just write like myself and not as Kitty4D, it makes me feel better in some ways, but for the content that I create, it helps me get into a certain mindset that has at least so far seemed to help me! I can’t really explain it and maybe I could stop doing it now, but I do like to keep a distinction between the real me and my online Kitty4D, especially since I create NSFW content also- I like to keep a little distance for safety reasons. :)

yes, i hope it isn't too annoying, it helps keep me a little silly when i'm thinking about things to create and especially when i'm describing them to people ahaha.

i've only been putting content out for about 2 months so i guess i am still learning what works best, i'd like to think that it helps give a little bit of a cutesy attitude to what i put out but i am also even newer to hive where i end up writing a lot more at once than i was accustomed to when i kinda came to using this style.

it's almost funny to me now because i actually feel like a different person when i switch in between the writing styles 😁

but i like it because while i'm most def not an anime uWuuuu girl, i do really like using some silly emojis and emoticons that i think would seem totally out of place if i didn't maintain the style LOL (´つヮ⊂)

Ha! My mental firewall blocks all emojis so I did not even think about that aspect.

Just keep writing and letting it evolve (or devolve) as need be.

A lot of readers are way more of a stickler about formatting than I am. I like the substance of it and know that I will overlook all kinds of stuff to discern the intent but most folks are not that way... hence the unsolicited advice.

yeah i would hope people would say something (like you did), since it gives me something to consider.

but most of what i post is (at least i sure hope) artistic in nature, so i hope in most cases it can be easily overlooked. but when i get a bit more wordy maybe i'll go back and forth just to make it easier on some peoples' eyes.

I know I don't USUALLY like reading things that are written poorly, but I at least try to make sure I don't make any typos and that my grammar is for the most part on point. :D

I hear ya. If it was riddled with grammatical errors it would assuredly detract from it. It is good stuff in my not-so-humble opinion.

I am unsure if many content curators would distinguish it as being artistic or as low effort.

Personally, I would love to see you stick around on this platform and do not want to see you grow discouraged.

ohh i don't mean that the writing is artistic LOL

i mean the images that i generally am posting, that i just happen to be writing about :D

i know for a fact it takes me high effort to post in the manner i do, but yeah i hear you, some people may just think that.. i'm somehow unable to use my shift key properly or choose not to because i simply don't care LOL.

it's actually super hard to make posts using my phone anywhere because it almost forces me out of the style! so pretty much everything is done on desktop cause purposely making "i'm" and "i'll" come out following my style can be a real pain in the ass!

Ah. Thanks for the clarification there on what part is artistic! LOL! The images are definitely artistic. Folks should have no trouble seeing that!

Maybe I should just look at them more and read less but your wordy responses and writing in the posts is what caught my attention. So much stuff on here is kind of stale and pretty meh so anyone with a drop of authenticity and uniqueness really pops out to me. Of course you have more than a 'drop' so that is nice!

thanks yeah i kinda feel like these days on the internet the thing that matters most is being genuine. it's not like i'm really making money (yet? oh it would be a dream if it happens someday) making content, but i have seen people in various places talking about how they don't know how to get any engagement online and i don't know, it just seems like as long as you genuinely have something you want to share and talk about, something ends up happening!

i think so many people are just interested in like literally just trying to make money and they're so blatant and forced about it. i try to be totally upfront and honest about everything i do, ofc (and using "ofc" is also part of the style, plz forgive lol) i really would love to be able to make a living now creating content online and i don't think anything bad can happen if i am honest about my intentions. but it doesn't also mean that i just like making the content and sharing it and engaging with people online.

this post in particular certainly didn't have any financial intentions behind it, i mean- it does at a certain point in the line of reasoning for posting, but it's not at the forefront. i actually do want to see this project succeed and i think it's cool to try to get more people interested in astronomy and science in general!

i guess the difference is making a post in hopes of making money immediately from that post vs. just engaging with people and hopefully adding value to a platform in general with content and hoping that at some point there will be benefits from that.

but i definitely make posts in some places that are about trying to make money, they're pretty obvious though :D and i haven't really done that here on hive, except i guess when i post in the nsfw sections cause clearly i have no internal desire to share nsfw content "just for fun" LOL

anyway it's just interesting stuff to think about, i've thought about it a lot. i think people these days are highly tuned to looking for scams online, but the only people who really worry about their posts coming off that way are probably people looking to scam or make a quick buck ahahah

Wow! That sums up so much! I wish more folks approached it with that mentality. Then again seeing the 'broader picture' (or trying to) is not something most folks are willing to do in the first place so I try not to hold it against them.

I think the engagement a lot of folks seek is to either push their own narrative, agenda, make money or to self-promote. Then there is the 'everyone wants to be liked' mentality which results in only sharing things that might 'make' people like them. Personally, I do not expect superficial folks to behave in a non-superficial manner so I disregard most of what I read and focus on what the underlying motives might be. I used to want more engagement but now I want 'quality' authentic engagement that makes me think, ask questions and generally grow in one way or another.

Ha! Yeah good catch on the 'ofc'! I often cringe at the acronyms especially since so many folks (especially on Hive) do not have English as their first language and thus struggle to grasp the acronyms. The same can be said for colloquialisms and even contractions because it creates a hurdle for those readers even though they can often be educational. Anyway, no need to apologize to me for it.

As far as folks only being interested in making money I always think of the old saying: Some folks are so poor all they have is money.

I think that it is more indicative of the cultures that we live in than the folks themselves on a personal level. There is a lot of pressure on folks to believe that money (especially having it) is more valuable than anything else.

i guess the difference is making a post in hopes of making money immediately from that post vs. just engaging with people and hopefully adding value to a platform in general with content and hoping that at some point there will be benefits from that.

That part really nails it!

Yes, it surely is some interesting stuff to think about and it shows that you have done a good bit of it!

thank you! i really wanted to share it here because i figured there PROBABLY are other artists here who would love the same opportunity.

i struggled about actually coming right out and really trying to push that possibility in my post, because i'm not here to shill minting nfts on any particular blockchain, but i do think if there were a lot of interest from artists here who didn't want to mint nfts on the DeSo blockchain that the project could certainly decide to do a HIVE mission in the future too!

but definitely if there are people who would want to try to get in on it now, they could mint nfts (there are no gas fees on DeSo or anything) there. i know one of the things that would really boost artists from this community would be the high likelihood of having space-related art already made that hadn't already been sold as an nft. (having ownership of the nft still is necessary just because that would make things tricky otherwise, for instance mine is minted but i am not accepting bids on it anytime soon if i ever do)

i also plan to create a new version of my NFT after the mission, i should have mentioned it in the post (or maybe i did?) - but showing what happens to my NFT after being struck by the ~mysterious cosmic rays~ :D

I think within this Alien Art Hive community there are many NFT artists. On Chain Art is another community with a loft of NFT creators. I don't know if you are on with NFT Showroom yet, which is built on Hive, but you should be! I think that you could cross-post to the On Chain Art community to get more exposure to the project. I usually don't tell in advance, but your post has been curated and will be featured in the next community post here in AAH.

I haven't checked out DeSo for minting yet. Now that you mention it doesn't have gas fees i definitely should. I was a launch partner with Makers Place on Ethereum... but i never do anything there because of gas fees. Back when the beta testing and launch happened they used to cover the gas fees for the artists. It's blown up a lot since then... so i don't blame them for not doing it anymore.

Thanks for sharing this here in our community and i do hope some others take the opportunity to get 'onboard'... pun intended. I'm going to have to look more into it for myself.

i think what these blockchains with little to no fees (and to be clear- i say deso has no fees, i guess it's better to call them infinitesimal, there ARE fees but out of almost 8000 transactions so far, i've paid $0.00 so far -some ridiculously small fraction of a cent that doesn't round up to a cent)-

anyway sorry, what these blockchains with negligible fees shows is that you can think of nfts totally differently. i personally think most nfts are silly. but i make my nfts to just be considered like a tip, but a tip that in turn gives the person something that i put at least a few hours into making.

so there's no real worry about if what you create "fits the perceived definitiion of what an nft is". if someone made a cool piece of art that has a space or alien theme, and they haven't minted it as an nft elsewhere, they could go submit the art to the project and if they get whitelisted, then they can mint it on deso. i really really shy away from coming across like i'm shilling another place here, though i feel like i owe it back now because i actually promote the heck out of hive over on deso- but on deso literally all you have to do is make a post that includes your image, then click a link next to the post that creates an NFT from that post. it's literally like 2-3 clicks and that's it.

there's a lot of things hive does WAY WAY WAY better than deso, but i really think it's probably way easier to mint an nft on deso than anywhere else. (NOW- you might ask yourself, WHAT IS AN NFT? and then ahahaha welcome to hell as you wonder wtf has actually been created i mean shit it's CALLED an nft right? so it's an nft yeah? who the hell knows? it can't be changed, so it's like non-fungible yeah? and it's on a blockchain, so like, i guess it's inherently a token or something.. ahaha WHO KNOWS all i know is gettin dat artwork into space yo!!!!!)

How cool is this! Well done for chasing this and getting accepted. I enjoy the subject of space but I’m not nearly as informed as you. Nonetheless, you’ve made me want to go look up this Carl Sagan fella and maybe even find out about the pioneer plaques. Love the NFT you’ve created for this project and even more so with your explanation of what it entails. You got skills, lady!

ty! i'm shocked if you have never heard of Carl Sagan, but i guess i am a bit of a nerd :D

i wouldn't doubt a lot of what he wrote about is slightly outdated now, but regardless, he had an insatiable pursuit of knowledge and i think that's the main thing that i took away from his work and legacy.

he also has a seriously calming voice! 😊

Lol, it’s amazing how a good voice can lure us in. Anyone with a Scottish accent gets me.

Passionate people create passionate followers and it’s great that people like him exist. Imagine how many others like Mr Sagan where overlooked or just not noticed during the times before the internet. I love the access we have to these inspirational people.

Very glad to see your post has got the rewards it deserved too 🙂 keep up the good work @kitty4d

personally i think it's just the voice of someone who has calm reasoning and logic, whatever the accent is, people can recognize that in a voice

it's how people get easily scammed by motivational speakers, too, because those people buy into their own nonsense so wholeheartedly that they truly believe they have reason and logic on their side

and thank you :)

I always thought it was odd smart people would send a tiny speck of humanity off in some random direction hoping for it to be found someday, when we've already travelled 116 light-years in all directions with those fancy schmancy radio waves of ours.

0
0
0.000
avatar

well, yes, but those radio waves would basically come through as noise. i mean, they would recognize patterns to it of course the same way we look for sounds coming from outer space having patterns to try to distinguish random junk from possible ET activity.. but there would be no context to it.

look at the https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/golden-record/ - Voyager Golden Record. it's got samples of all that same stuff, but curated, like a nice hive community lol

now, this nft project is kinda doing the same thing as the previous stuff, except there's never really direct "beaming" of nft data out into space. if it's part of a website, where you're getting the data via satellite, there's all sorts of encryption methods, it's in HTTP protocol (protocol protocol, i know, "ATM machine", it hurts me too but it feels like it's more necessary with HTTP for some reason?), etc. here we're literally just beaming the nfts individually which while i'm not going to speak for the specific technical details (it's probably still not as tight as i would like for it to be), they're at least being sent one-by-one. though for the purposes of the project there won't be any one of these nfts that is given a certificate featuring a time of launch ahead of any others, we're considering all of these nfts going into space at the same time.

i hope at some point these nfts might actually be part of a craft that goes on a mission, but unfortunately i don't think we really DO that much anymore sadly :(

one of the thoughts i had early on that i forgot to touch on in my post was that- what if these aliens use blockchain technology for their communication, and so these nfts and other blockchain-specific data could be the first of the data we send into space that they would have the immediate capability of decoding and reading.

it's a silly thought, i think, but i guess you never know?

But they're aliens. They have better receivers than us. Right?

Can you imagine some distant society invents television and instead of getting that hissing black and white snow stuff, they get us? Trippy. It could happen.

Sometimes my work gets beamed to space, but I hate using satellite internet. Starlink solves most of those problems though.

Space is awesome though. Ever play Kerbal Space Program? I kick ass at that game.

isn't that the "program" that just lets you have failed moon landings over and over? LOL

and yeah one would think they have better receivers. certainly if they're able to travel the distances required to get anywhere near us- and to not have been seen. (unless you're one of THOSE people.. lol)

i'm really interested in the physics. like, i used to read a lot of theoretical physics books in high school. alongside the carl sagan stuff. like how can we come up with a single set of equations that unifies all of the known forces? what is dark matter/energy? these things keep me awake at night.

Yeah. I think most fail at that game. Teaches you basic and some advanced orbital mechanics, and a lot of other things. Basic simulation but it's accurate and gets the point across. I enjoy it. Can watch a SpaceX launch and know exactly what's going on.

Anton Petrov, Isaac Arthur, Scott Manley, Event Horizon, Everyday Astronaut; all good Youtube personalities to follow if you like this stuff.

Even when I was a kid I'd think about space. Figured out stars are just Suns with planets around them like here, long before I was provided information proving it's true. It's unfortunate some out there in internet land think space is a hoax and all that. Slows progress.
