“Let’s play a game,” she said. “You’re the angel of death and I’m the angel of light.”

I smiled. It was mid morning on a Saturday and we just returned from catechism class. Our Saturday games were always about the divinity. We ran into the house, pulling our scarfs off along the way. I had planned to stay till late evening. My Mama never complained and Sarah’s mum didn’t mind. We headed to her room and locked the door.

“I’ll kiss you three times on the cheeks. That way, you turn into the angel of light.” She hesitated, uncertain.

“The way Judas kissed Jesus?” I teased.

We laughed. The game began.

Sarah closed her eyes. I could feel her warm breath on my face. I turned my head to the right and waited. Her lips were cold as the first kiss landed below my left eye. I held my breath. The second one landed on my nose. I turned. The third came in contact with my lips. Her eyes flew open.

I waited for her to raise her head but she didn’t. Something shifted. I could tell she felt it too. Her lips moved. Mine followed. Our fingers followed next, then sounds that were new to both of us. We were only twelve. We never talked about it. Now, we are adults and we still play our little game and I still turn my head each time.
