Do you like my hat? [5 Minute Freewrite: Friday, September 25th 2020]

Years ago there was a run. A trail run over the mountains around Preddvor and Jezersko in northern Slovenia. It was 50 kilometers long with lots of climbing involved and even more beautiful views all along the way.

it was a great experience for everybody involved.

One of them, one of the last to finish the trail, was a gentleman who sat alone in the tent after he came into the finish. I felt like he needs company. So I sat by him and greeted him in Slovenian. It turned out that he was from the USA. From the state of New York to be more precise. For half an hour we were discussing the run and the beauty of nature in general and Slovenian mountains in particular.

When we parted he gave me a hat. As a present, he said. Well, I was very surprised. I got a nice running hat just as a way that somebody has said "thank you for talking with me." Great!

I immediately checked if I have something similar to offer to him as a way of saying "thank you for the hat." I found a running shirt, sleeveless one, with the logo of the Runner's Forum, Tekaški forum. It was an informal society of runners in Slovenia which I founded.

He was very happy and surprised when I came back to him and gave him the shirt. At first, he didn't want to take it. Then we agreed that we both got something special out of the whole day's experience. A hat, a shirt, a beautiful trail run, and a friendship.

The story of how I met Dick, my running friend from across the sea, and how I got a great running hat that I gladly use on many occasions to tribute our friendship.

Escarpment Trail Run hat, the legendary one which has the main role in the #freewrite story above.

I love the story and your spirit of gratitude. We gain more by giving than by keeping everything for ourselves. It's a blessing to bless others.

Hello dear friend @ ervin-lemark good evening
It is good to meet you. Today I learned that you have founded the ¨ informal society of runners in Slovenia¨ and that you are an excellent person, only those who make and have your gesture.
Lasting friendships begin that way dear friend, in a simple informal chat after a long career.
No doubt Dick will be proud to have your friendship
Thank you very much for letting us know this beautiful passage of your life
have a wonderful weekend

Hey, thanks a lot for your curating. I appreciate it.

About the photo. When I saw the prompt I went to my Google photos page, searched for hat and found this photo. It was my real cue for the story :)
