#freewrite :: Prompt for Day 1378: long lasting

Some may say that things are long lasting if they are expensive but I beg to differ. Some cheap things can be pretty long lasting too and when things are long lasting, we save money. We save time too because we do not have to go look for it again and buy a new one.

But when it comes to food and items that should spoil or fade in time, we should seriously wonder why are they long lasting. It is a huge question mark about what chemical stuffs are added to them to make them long lasting and if they are harmful to us.

But when it comes to things that we wear, things that we use, that are not food related, not skin related, I like it when things are long lasting especially things that has sentimental value. At the same time, I am not one who likes changing things often. If I find something I like, I would use them until they can no longer be used.

My first car was pretty long lasting as I took care of it quite well I thought. I washed it every weekend without fail, I would open the bonnet and wipe the engine and all. it stayed with me for about 12 years before it started making a funny soft knocking noise that sounded as though it was going to breakdown at any time. The thought of having a broken car in the middle of a bad traffic did not entice me much.

I sent the car to the workshop when I first heard the knocking sound and did my regular car service too but the service engineers could not find the source of the problem. I sent it to another workshop and it was the same result. It became quite worrying that both places could not find the problem.

I managed to find another workshop whose mechanic did manage to find the source of the knocking sound but it was going to cost a lot of money, about a quarter of a new cheapest car, to fix it. After much consideration, I sold the car to buy a new one because I couldn't bear the thought of getting upset when the car breaks down.

My clothes - tshirts, pants, skirts, mostly have been with me for more than 10 years. Some for 20 years. Some has shrunk and are a little tight on me but I can still wear them. Very happily I wear them, thinking about the good ol' memories when I first got them and the places I have worn them too. Some, I have brought them travelling, some been through adventures with me and some I have worn for special occasions which will forever be remembered and cherished.

In cases when my clothes can no longer be worn, either too small or too worn out, I would change them to something else. For example, this feel good t-shirt was a gift from my brother, he had hopes that I will be a good girl though I think I might have failed him in that department :D

When it became too small, I turned it into a pillowcase which I still use and hug to sleep until today, continuing to give a long lasting memory.

I can't deny that it was quite painful at first to cut off the sleeves and sew it into a pillowcase but it was a good decision at the end of it because I could use it again instead of keeping it in the closet, hidden.

Yes, I do like it when things are long lasting because they usually hold a special meaning in my heart and I wouldn't want to change them unless I have to.
