Day 986: 5 Minute Freewrite: Friday - Prompt: new age

“I’m in no mood to endorse a crazy scheme like that.”

“I beg you to reconsider. The algorithm’s prediction model shows an 83% chance that the donor will be compatible.”

“So you’re ready to harvest this poor schmoe’s brain even if there’s a 17% chance of failure? The Device can be engaged once. If it works, we will have entered a new age. Most excellent. But if it doesn’t, the social order will convulse. We might never have a chance at another Device.”

We argued back and forth like that for days. But in the end, I conceded. 83% wasn’t perfect, but the algorithm’s prediction model had never before returned anything greater than 72% after years of attempts. So the donor’s brain was harvested and the Device was engaged.

Well, you all know how well it worked out. If it had failed, we wouldn’t be having this happy little conclave, now would we? Everything changed that day.

Everything.
