Prognosis of Calcium Oxalate Kidney Stones

In the majority of cases, the prognosis of calcium oxalate kidney stones is benign. As mentioned before, kidney stones may be asymptomatic and the may never pass. When they cause symptoms related to the obstruction of the urinary tract they may cause pyelonephritis (kidney infection), sepsis, or acute kidney failure if there is no prompt treatment.

There is a relationship between kidney stone formation and kidney damage that may lead to end stage renal disease (renal failure that requires dialysis or kidney transplantation). This is most likely due to the related damage from episodes of acute renal failure from obstruction of the urinary tract and from associated infections.

The measures taken to prevent the formation of kidney stones can reduce the chances that people develop the negative outcomes associated to symptomatic kidney stones.
