Oggi ho deciso di dare il via alla piccola variante targata Bikend a cui stavo pensando da qualche settimana. Essendo i miei vecchi report dei semplici riassunti della mia attività sulla bici, ho deciso di creare qualcosa che possa essere usato come spunto anche da chi voglia visitare i luoghi che io tocco durante i miei abbastanza brevi allenamenti. Mi focalizzerò su delle semplici panoramiche di salite che ho percorso e di cui ho raccolto qualche dato, oltre ad alcune foto scattate una volta raggiunte le varie località. Il primo episodio centra la sua attenzione su un paese in provincia di Lucca, nel comune di Stazzema: sto parlando di Gallena.
Today I decided to start the small Bikend variant that I had been thinking about for a few weeks. Being my old reports some simple summaries of my activity on the bike only, I decided to create something that can also be used as an inspiration by those who want to visit the places I touch during my fairly short workouts. I will focus on some simple views of the climbs that I have traveled and of which I have collected some data, as well as some photos taken once I reached the various locations. The first episode centers its attention on a town in the province of Lucca, in the municipality of Stazzema: I'm talking about Gallena.
Gallena è un paese raggiungibile dalla Versilia, percorrendo le strade verso monte, direzione Querceta e Seravezza; è poi necessario continuare seguendo la strada provinciale che prosegue verso Cardoso e Stazzema, senza però arrivarvi: poco dopo aver superato Seravezza, ancor prima di arrivare in località Ruosina, si può trovare una deviazione sulla destra che passa al di sopra del Fiume Vezza. Lì inizia la salita vera e propria, un tracciato di circa 2,7 chilometri che io ho percorso in bicicletta. Ecco i dati che ho raccolto sulla salita, potete vedere in figura il tracciato.
Gallena is a town that can be reached from Versilia, following the roads towards the mountains, towards Querceta and Seravezza; it is then necessary to continue following the provincial road that continues towards Cardoso and Stazzema, but without arriving there: shortly after passing Seravezza, even before arriving in Ruosina, you can find a deviation on the right that passes above the Vezza River. There the actual climb begins, a route of about 2.7 kilometers that I have traveled by bicycle. In the figures, you can find the data I collected on the climb or the route.
Per chi desiderasse cimentarsi con la propria bici, è consigliata una buona bici da strada abbastanza leggera. La salita è corta ma impegnativa, io l'ho divisa idealmente in due parti: una iniziale, più leggera e con qualche tratto in cui rifiatare, e una seconda più tenace, con pendenze mai inferiori al 9%. L'unica eccezione: gli ultimi 100 metri prima di arrivare al paese, fortunatamente più pedalabili.
If you want to try your legs on your own bike, I recommend a good, fairly light road bike. The climb is short but demanding, I have ideally divided it into two parts: an initial one, lighter and with some stretches in which to catch your breath, and a second more tenacious, with gradients never lower than 9%. The only exception: the last 100 meters before reaching the town, fortunately, simpler.
Non so bene quanti abitanti abbia Gallena. Io sono capitato una Domenica pomeriggio verso le 17.30, nella seconda metà di Giugno. Il clima è caldo, ma i 350 metri di altitudine e l'aria fresca della valle dove scorre il fiume Vezza aiutano mantenere la temperatura più bassa rispetto al vicino litorale. Puoi anche vedere qualche foto che ho deciso d'inserire. La prima è il punto in cui la salita finalmente si fa più tranquilla, le altre rappresentano invece la chiesa locale – la chiesa intitolata a Santa Barbara e a Maria Santissima di Buon Consiglio – e alcune sculture che riposano vicino al suo ingresso. Ho saputo casualmente da persone incontrate qui che l'autore aveva da poco superato i cinquant'anni di attività e che ha recentemente inaugurato una mostra proprio nel paese.
I don't know how many inhabitants live in Gallena. I came on a Sunday afternoon around 17.30, in the second half of June. The climate is warm, but the 350 meters of altitude and the fresh air of the valley where the Vezza river flows help keep the temperature lower than the nearby coast. You can also see some photos that I have decided to include. The first is the point where the climb finally becomes calmer, the others represent the local church - the church dedicated to Santa Barbara and Maria Santissima di Buon Consiglio - and some sculptures that rest near its entrance. I accidentally learned from people I met here that the author had just passed the fifty years of activity and that he has recently inaugurated an exhibition right in the country.
Un cartellone posizionato vicino alla piazza parlava di alcune miniere famose nella zona, mi sembra di ricordare le Miniere del Bottino. Non chiedermi perché si chiamino così, non vorrei cadere in una gaffe. Ma vediamo: cercando sul web, ho scovato un veloce riassunto redatto sul sito dell'Accademia dei Fisiocritici. Qui si parla del “bottino” secondo il significato di “tesoro”: questo perché sembra che dalle miniere situate sul Monte Bottino venissero ricavate Galena e Blenda, due minerali destinati ad attraversare dei processi metallurgici per trasformarsi infine in Argento e Piombo. Sempre su questo sito, si parla delle miniere del Monte Bottino come secondo produttore di Argento in tutta Italia.
A sign placed near the square talked about some famous mines in the area, I seem to remember the Bottino's Mines. Don't ask me why they are called that, I wouldn't want to fall into a gaffe. But let's see: looking on the web, I found a quick summary written on the website of the "Fisiocritici's Academy". Here we speak of "bottino" according to the meaning of "treasure" in italian: this is because it seems that "Galena" and "Blenda" were extracted from the mines located on "Monte Bottino", two minerals destined to go through metallurgical processes to finally transform into Silver and Lead. Also on this site, they talk about the mines of Monte Bottino as the second-largest producer of silver in the whole Italy.
Tornando al percorso, la strada è completamente asfaltata e in buone condizioni fino all'arrivo in paese. Sembrerebbero esserci poi degli snodi da cui proseguire a piedi, sentieri che però non ho mai provato e su cui non saprei darti indicazioni precise.
Returning to the route, the road is completely asphalted and in good condition until the arrival in the village. Then there would seem to be junctions from which to continue on foot, paths that I have never tried and on which I would not be able to give you precise indications.
