Old Havana, Marvelous City [EN/ES]

English Version

The city of Old Havana, “Marvelous City,” is a place that maintains its brightness even despite the decadence that is noticed in many of its buildings and streets. Although in these last years the economic difficulties have made the deterioration more evident—flaking facades, balconies that need repair, and streets that show too much their wear and the passing of time, underneath that worn appearance a colonial city with centuries of history is still alive, that has remained and that preserves its own brilliance.

And even though some of its spaces and constructions have been renewed and restored, the essence continues being that of an old city, with its burden of the passing of centuries that is felt in every walk. It is a city that has known slavery, the struggles to free itself from colonial domination, and that has seen illustrious people who marked its history pass through its streets. A city that keeps the historical memory of the Capital. To think that through the same places where today thousands of inhabitants pass walked figures who faced decisive moments, for me, gives a special value to every corner.

That is why in my eyes always the beauty of the old stands out above the modern. The colonial buildings, the historic plazas, and the cobblestone streets have a character that is not found in other parts. Although the present brings crisis and difficulties, Old Havana continues being a space where the past imposes itself and reminds us that the old is of great value.

Old Havana is not only a set of streets and old buildings, it is a marvelous city, where the passing of time is felt and evidenced in its appearance, but it is also a living symbol of resistance and memory. Every stone, every wall, and every plaza tell a story that connects with the identity of all Cubans. And that unique personality is what gives it its beauty, even in the middle of decadence, with its unique way of shining and remaining.

Cheers, and until next time!
