The Almendares River has always been an important natural resource for Havana. First it was a source of drinking water and sustenance for the first settlers of the place, and later it became the natural center from which the urbanization of the neighborhoods of El Vedado and Miramar began.

Over it rises a wide and modern masonry bridge, with an avenue that connects the municipalities of Playa and Plaza, but there is also another smaller and less showy one from the architectural point of view, known as Iron Bridge, very close to its mouth.

Here the passage of heavy vehicles is not allowed; only motorcycles, bicycles and light cars, since its structure is more fragile. It also has a narrow pedestrian space from where people cross it with total safety, while they feel how the vehicles vibrate and rumble when passing over it. It is also the place from where one enjoys one of the most beautiful views of the river.

Here one can contemplate the unique spectacle of the city and nature integrating, a meeting point between two environments that should coexist without harming each other. The protection of the rivers that still run through urban life should always be a priority, although unfortunately it is not always so, and the waters of the Almendares suffer the pollution of the waste that is dumped into it.

Even so, the view from this point is beautiful and does not reflect the pollution that is perceived in other sections of the river. Towards the interior the water makes its way among the vegetation, and when looking towards the mouth, where there is a small dock, the horizon transforms, the sea appears in the distance, blue, calm, and on the coastline it merges with the sky. It is a unique postcard where the city embraces nature.

This space is very special not only because of the beautiful view of the river. Very close on the avenue, a building with a peculiar brick chimney can be distinguished, dominating the landscape from above. Formerly it was a food factory but today it houses a very well-known and crowded cultural project: the Cuban Art Factory (FAC) where the best of our contemporary culture is presented.

Walking through this corner of the capital’s Vedado is to live a complete sensory experience with the metallic echo of the cars over the bridge, the salty smell that comes from the sea and the view of the surroundings between the city and the river. It is a place to enjoy and wander without haste.

El río Almendares ha sido siempre un recurso natural importante para La Habana. Primero fue fuente de agua potable y de sustento para los primeros pobladores del lugar, y más tarde se convirtió en el centro natural desde el cual comenzó la urbanización de los barrios de El Vedado y Miramar.

Sobre él se levanta un amplio y moderno puente de mampostería, con una avenida que comunica a los municipios de Playa y Plaza, pero también existe otro más pequeño y menos vistoso desde el punto de vista arquitectónico, conocido como Puente de Hierro, muy próximo a su desembocadura.

Por aquí no está permitido el paso de vehículos pesados; solo motocicletas, bicicletas y autos ligeros, ya que su estructura es más frágil. Tiene además un estrecho espacio peatonal desde donde las personas lo cruzan con total seguridad, mientras sienten cómo vibra y retumban los vehículos al pasar sobre él. Es también el lugar desde donde se disfruta una de las vistas más bonitas del río.

Aquí se puede contemplar el espectáculo único de la ciudad y la naturaleza integrándose, un punto de unión entre dos ambientes que deberían convivir sin dañarse. La protección de los ríos que aún surcan la vida urbana debería ser siempre una prioridad, aunque por desgracia no siempre es así, y las aguas del Almendares sufren la contaminación de los desechos que se vierten en él.

Aun así la vista desde este punto es preciosa y no refleja la contaminación que se percibe en otros tramos del río. Hacia el interior el agua se abre paso entre la vegetación, y al mirar hacia la desembocadura, donde hay un pequeño embarcadero, el horizonte se transforma, el mar aparece a lo lejos, azul, en calma, y en la línea costera se funde con el cielo. Es una postal única donde la ciudad se abraza con la naturaleza.

Este espacio es muy especial no solo por la hermosa vista del río. Muy cerca en la avenida, se distingue una edificación con una peculiar chimenea de ladrillos que domina el paisaje desde las alturas. Antiguamente fue una fábrica de alimentos pero hoy alberga un proyecto cultural muy conocido y concurrido: la Fábrica de Arte Cubano (FAC) donde se presenta lo mejor de nuestra cultura contemporánea.

Caminar por este rincón del Vedado capitalino es vivir una experiencia sensorial completa con el eco metálico de los autos sobre el puente, el olor salobre que llega desde el mar y la vista de los alrededores entre la ciudad y el río. Es un lugar para disfrutar y recorrer sin prisa.
