A trip to IconSiam with an old friend, ไปเที่ยวไอคอนสยามกับเพื่อนเก่า

The weather in December has been very nice with warm sunshine and clear blue sky. During the weekend in Bangkok, I decided to ask an old friend to check out the local bazaar and take a trip to IconSiam. After having very nice coffee at a little charming coffee shop in the bazaar, we decided to take the free boat trip to IconSiam.

There was a long queue of people waiting to board the free boat trip at the Sathorn Pier. I was so glad to see several foreign tourists around the pier and some waiting to go to IconSiam. I did wonder how they got inside the country; only foreigners who have houses or condos in Thailand and specially selected rich tourists had been allowed to enter Thailand a month ago. I have started to see rich middle-eastern tourists in shopping malls including VIP touring buses for rich Chinese tourists. But these visitors have to follow the two weeks’ quarantine at selected five-star hotels. There are long waiting lists of expats and rich people wanting to enter Thailand every month. The buskers at the pier and shopkeepers at IconSiam should be very happy.

We had to wait about twenty minutes for the boat to arrive at the pier. But we didn’t mind waiting as the busker at the pier was such as good singer. My friend was singing along while I shouted ‘very good, more more!” The singer was so pleased to audience interactions that he started talking to us in English. He started to sing specifically selected songs for us: ‘I started a joke’, ‘Massachusetts’ and similar oldies. Several tourists also gave the nice singer money before getting on the boat.

The river level had risen very high and was full of strong currants. The sun was about to set and the cool breezes were very refreshing. Suddenly, we felt very good and exhilarating being on the boat trip. Passengers took photos of the skyscrapers along the river and IconSiam. The energy of the river and open sky with strong fresh wind was quite impressive; most people were suddenly plunged into deep absorption of natural vibes of the open sky and massive sheets of running water. We all suddenly felt very small and vulnerable at the vim of natural forces.

We are so lucky to have this wonderful river in the middle of Bangkok. This really makes living in big cities much more enjoyable as we could come to the river to get in touch with nature and get recharged from time to time. My senior friend seemed to enjoy walking along the riverfront of IconSiam very much. We just walked around looking at crowd of people enjoying themselves.

The Christmas decorations and lightings are the main attractions that have made IconSiam becoming lively again after the long lockdown. There were no Chinese group tours to be seen like last year; only Thai people and expats living in Thailand enjoying the strange freedom in open space by the river. The wind became stronger as daylight began to dim. The sunset was behind the building so we couldn’t see the sunset properly, only faint reflection on the river could be seen briefly.

I was quite surprised to see a few luxury touring boats full of foreign tourists enjoying their loud dinner parties on the river. So, those tourists with special long stay visa have finally arrived in Bangkok and Phuket to escape from crazy new lockdowns in Europe and China. We are so lucky to have lots of hot days with strong sunshine to eliminate viruses in the environment for us. I just hope that it would be possible for more ordinary tourists to visit Thailand so that the economy would be woken up from its long slumber.

สุดสัปดาห์มี่ผ่านมาอากาศในกรุงเทพดีมาก แดดจัดและมีลมเย็นสบาย เราก็ชวนเพื่อนไปเดินเล่นแถวริมแม่น้ำ แล้วไปแวะเดินเที่ยวที่ไอคอนสยามเพื่อดูการตกแต่งสถานที่ในการส่งท้ายปีเก่าและ ต้อนรับปีใหม่กัน เราไปหาที่นั่งกินกาแฟก่อน โชคดีมากเราไปเจอร้านกาแฟเล็กๆที่มีกาแฟอร่อยมากในราคากันเอง เราคงไปที่นั่นอีกในอนาคต จากนั้นเราก็ไปที่ท่าน้ำสาทร ไปคอยลงเรือไปไอคอนสยาม เราดีใจมากที่เห็นมีคนเกือบร้อยคนคอยลงเรือ และยังมีคนมาร้องเพลงเปิดหมวกที่นั่นด้วย เสียงเขาดีมาก มีเสียงสูงและไพเราะมาก แถมยังร้องเพลงแบบสมัยก่อนได้หลายเพลง พวกเราก็ไปยืนฟังเพลงอย่างเพลิดเพลิน เราตะโกนให้กำลังใจเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ นักร้องเลยตอบกลับมาเป็นภาษาอังกฤษแบบเขินๆ เขาคงคิดว่าเราเป็นคนเกาหลีกระมัง พอเรือมาถึงท่าเรือ พวกเราก็เดินผ่านนักร้องแล้วให้ทิปกันหลายคน

พระอาทิตย์จวนจะตกดินในอีกชั่วโมงหนึ่ง แต่ท้องฟ้ามีเมฆมาก ทำให้ไม่มีวิวพระอาทิตย์ตกดินสวยๆ เราชอบดูกระแสน้ำที่บิดมาเป็นเกลียวแน่นมาก มันมีพลังอย่างประหลาด เรือค่อยๆแล่นไปเทียบท่าน้ำของไอคอนสยาม อากาศดีมาก ลมแรงและสดชื่นมาก ที่นั่นมีนักท่องเที่ยวชาวไทยมากหลายร้อยคนเดินเล่น และถ่ายรูปกับแสงไฟ และสถานที่ที่มีการตกแต่งอย่างสวยงาม เราดูความแตกต่างของภาพตึกระฟ้าที่อยู่ตรงข้าม และตึกเก่าที่อยู่ริมแม่น้ำ นี่กรุงเทพกำลังเปลี่ยนเป็นเมืองที่มีแต่ตึกสูงๆเต็มไปหมด นี่โขคดีที่มีแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาไหลผ่าน ทำให้เราได้มาสัมผัสกับธรรมขาติของสายน้ำและสายลม ท่ามกลางท้องฟ้าที่เปิดกว้าง

เรากับเพื่อนเก่าก็เดินเล่นไปเรื่อยๆช้าๆที่ ลานหน้าไอคอนสยาม เราดูคนหลายหลายวัยต่างก็มาเดินสูดอากาศ และชมวิวริมน้ำกัน หลายคนพากันมาทั้งครอบครัว เรายังไม่เห็นมีนักท่องเที่ยวชาวจีนมา พวกเราจึงยังสามารถเดินอย่างสบายใจ ไม่ต้องเบียดกัน แสงอาทิตย์เริ่มอับแสง ทำให้แสงไฟที่ประดับประดาที่นั่นดูเด่นชัดขึ้น แปลกที่เขาไม่มีต้นคริสมาสตั้งอยู่ด้วย มีแต่โครงสร้างเหมือนปิรามิดและไฟหลากสี พวกเราเดินถ่ายรูปและมองวิวของกรุงเทพอย่างเงียบๆ ต่างคนก็คงคิดว่าอะไรก็เปลี่ยนแปลงไปกับเวลา เราก็ไม่รู้ว่าในอีกห้าปีข้างหน้า วิวที่นี่จะเปลี่ยนแปลงไปขนาดไหน ชีวิตของพวกเราก็คงไม่เหมือนเดิมในห้าปีข้างหน้าเช่นกัน
