Amazing street food in lively Si Wiang Road near Robinson Mall, แหล่งกินข้าวเที่ยงที่บางรัก

Last week I had the opportunity to walk along Si Wiang road and observed all the amazing street food and Thai sweets along this narrow road. I never expected this old narrow road to be so lively and full of activities during lunch time. It seemed that all local people and office workers in Bangrak district decided to have their lunch break here.

This side road is opposite my favourite Robinson shopping mall. On that day I had a lunch meeting with some friends at the famous Chinese restaurant, Sanyod, which is located at the other end of Si Wiang road. So, I took a leisurely walk to observe all the various street food stalls and lively atmosphere along the way. The lunch time activities of pedestrians, bikers and vendors seemed to transform the whole road into a new reality of a parallel universe.

The vibes were so exuberant and cheerful which might be a result of the abundance of good food on offer by vendors and several restaurants. People were full of expectation of ordering the most delicious food as soon as possible. Some famous food stalls would quickly sell out as there were long lines of customers. If I were not a vegetarian, I would certainly have a hard time deciding what to order first. All the food stalls looked very attractive and well organised for serving their customers speedily. I guessed vendors had to work under a lot of pressure from hungry customers’ watching them intently; all wanting to get their food served as soon as possible.

This was the first time I paid attention to how people crowded around food stalls. I could see how vendors reacted with intensity and a sense of pride or satisfaction when a crowd surrounded their stalls. It was so contagious seeing people busily enjoying delicious lunch; all these munching people eating without speaking to each other made me wanting to order a big bowl of everything.

I took so much time trying to take nice pictures of people without being noticed. But one vendor of Thai sweet, coconut-rice custard, had been watching me and following me quietly. She asked me why I took photos of everything. So, I had to explain to her that I wanted to write a story to promote the place. She shouted to her friends at other stalls telling them that I wanted to take photos for my story.

She wondered why I took photos of old shop-houses and old stuff. She wondered whether foreign countries did not have similar houses and surrounding. I had to explain to her that those people in far away places would be interested to see our culture. So, she started telling me to take photos of her stall and coconut-rice custards (known as Kanom Krock in Thai).

It was quite amazing to see more than twenty kinds of street food, a proper coffee shop, several Thai sweets stalls including fruits and smoothies stalls in a narrow road. All the seats were fully occupied during lunch hour. I had no time to buy any Thai sweets, fruits or take away a Pad-Thai as I had to get to the traditional Chinese restaurant to meet my friends for lunch.

Personally I would have preferred to sit outside on the pavement having a simple lunch while watching lively activities around me. But the Cantonese food at Sanyod restaurant is very famous among the second generation of Thai-Chinese middle class community. We were quite impressed by their signature dishes and homemade Chinese sweets. The prices here are very reasonable while the food is consistently very good. My friends were quite glad that I introduced them to this place; they thought the roast ducks, fried noodles and vegetarian-stewed tofu were exceptionally delicious.

I always like to explore narrow side streets with old shop-houses which signaled to me of an old Chinese community largely established Here during the reign of King Rama V, over a hundred years ago. So, I know that I might stumble on old local market or local vendors who have been selling food or sweets according to their families’ recipes. If I was lucky, I would perhaps find home-made fresh noodle shop. Instead of having bakery and coffee shops; we would find noodle shops and tea shops among Chinese community in the old days.

สัปดาห์ที่แล้วนั้นเรามีโอกาสเดินเล่น ถ่ายรูปร้านอาหารต่างๆตามถนนศรีเวียง ที่อยู่ตรงข้ามห้างสรรพสินค้าโรบินสันที่บางรัก เรานัดกินข้าวกลางวันกับเพื่อนที่ร้านอาหารจีนเก่าแก่ที่ขื่อ แสนยอดซึ่งเป็นร้านอาหารกวางตุ้งที่มีชื่อเสียงในสมัยรุ่นพ่อแม่ของเรา ร้านนี้อยู่สุดซอยเลย ทำให้เรามีโอกาสเดินเล่นดูคนออกมาหาอาหารกลางวันกินในช่วงพักเที่ยง บรรยากาศดีมากเพราะมีคนเดินหาร้านอร่อยๆ และเข้าคิวคอยสั่งอาหารกันแน่นทุกร้าน มีทั้งบรรดาพนักงานที่ทำงานในบริเวณเขตบางรัก และคนขี่มอเตอร์ไซค์มาจอดแวะกินข้าวเต็มไปหมด เราจึงต้องเดินด้วยความระมัดระวังมาก ไหนจะต้องคอยหลบคนเดินตามทาง มอเตอร์ไซด์และรถยนต์ที่เบียดเข้ามาในซอยอีกด้วย

เราสนุกกับการเดินดูร้านอาหาร และผู้คนที่กำลังกินอาหารอย่างเอร็ดอร่อย ทำให้เรานึกอยากลองสั่งอาหารมาลองชิมดูบ้าง เราเจอร้านขายขนมครกและขนมไทยอีกด้วย ไม่น่าเชื่อว่าในถนนแคบๆเส้นนี้จะมีร้านอาหารมากกว่ายี่สิบเจ้า มีร้านกาแฟที่ดูดี ร้านขายนํ้าผลไม้ปั่น และร้านขายพัดไทยโดยเฉพาะด้วย เราเสียดายที่ไม่มีเวลาลองชิมขนมไทย และขนมครก เราอยากลองสั่งผัดไทยไปกินที่บ้าน แต่เรากลัวว่าจะไปไม่ทันนัดกับเพื่อนที่ร้านแสนยอด จึงต้องคอยดูเวลา

อาหารที่ร้านแสนยอดนั้น อร่อยมากและเขาไม่ใส่ผงชูรสเลยในอาหารที่ร้าน เพื่อนของเราติดใจเป็ดย่างและพวกก๋วยเตี๋ยวผัดที่นั่นมาก ตลอดจนเต้าหู้น้ำแดงเจ เราเองชอบก๋วยเตี๋ยวราดหน้าปลาที่นั่นมาก และของหวานจีนที่ร้านก็เป็นของที่ทำเอง ทุกอย่างจึงมีคุณภาพมาก ที่น่าแปลกใจคือ ราคาอาหารถูกอย่างไม่น่าเชื่อ สถานที่ก็สะอาดและมีความสวยงาม เราเป็นคนแนะนำให้เพื่อนมารูจักร้านจีนเก่าแก่ร้านนี้ เราคิดว่าคงต้องหาเวลามาเดินเล่นเพื่อลองกินขนม และผัดไทยและกาแฟร้อนด้วย เราขอบรรยากาศที่สบายๆของคนที่นั่นมาก ชาวบ้านอยู่กันแบบเรียบง่าย เขาอยู่กันแถวนี้มานานหลายปีแล้ว จนกลายเป็นรู้จักกันหมด ราวกับว่าที่นี่เป็นหมู่บ้านในสมัยก่อน
