Visiting Chinatown to buy Chinese calendar,

(Edited)

This year November has caught me by surprise as it seemed to have arrived all of a sudden. I become panic when realising that the New Year is around the corner and Chinese New Year is not far away. I have not yet looked up about the prospect of Chinese Feng Shui next year. Usually I would be well equipped with the knowledge of all the important changes in Feng Shui of the following year. So, I had to visit Chinatown to get a few Chinese calendars for the New Year 2021 as soon as possible.

I took the bus there as I was afraid of traffic jam and free parking space would be impossible to find. The traffic jam was quite bad but that indicated an improvement in the economic activities around Chinatown. There were more people at bus stops and the traffic policeman was out to manage the flow of traffic and stopping cars at the main crossing for pedestrians. You would be surprised to hear that zebra crossing is a very dangerous spot as drivers do not stop their cars for pedestrians as a habit. So, people have to be very careful when using the zebra crossing.

From the bus, I could see that most gold shops were not busy with customers while small restaurants along Yaowarad road were rather quiet. I gathered that things would become more lively after dark as young people preferred to come here for street food and taking selfies in the evening.

The old buildings and architecture along this road continued to fascinate me. I wondered what this road looked like during the 1960s to early 1970s. These old buildings must have been looking very nice, grand and luxurious in those good old days. It made me quite sad to see them left neglected and abandoned by their owners. The new modern shopping malls had taken most of the new generations of customers away. So Chinatown has become the shopping venue for the older customers and elderly Chinese people. Tourism has helped in reviving people’s interest and curiosity in the old shopping area.

We used to pass this road on the way home from school everyday. Unfortunately I was too young to appreciate the colourful and lively atmosphere along this road. Our first house was less than ten minutes’ walk from the center of Chinatown. Those several rows of old shop-houses had been bought by one of the richest tycoons in Thailand. They have been under renovation and developed as vintage cluster of modernised shop-houses. But I did wonder who would buy these expensive houses under this economic situation.

Every time I walked around Chinatown, a sad nostalgic feeling always came to my mind. My Chinese grandmother used to take me shopping with her at the old market. All the sights of Chinese pickles and food appeared quite strange to me as a young kid. My mother took me with her several times through the narrow lanes behind the main road. I regretted not having a camera with me to record the activities during the best years of my childhood. I guessed cameras were still quite a novel and expensive gadget in those days. I am afraid the old pictures on my memories would start to fade away along with changing time.

I loved to have my Chinese conversation with elderly shopkeepers as they reminded me of my Chinese relatives. It was quite an experience to be a kid among ten older Chinese relatives who were always so boisterous. The whole household seemed to be full of activities, laughters and cooking activities in two kitchens. How I wished I could borrow a time machine and an invisibility cloak so that I could take videos and photos of the past.

Looking at the old buildings which used to be grand and beautiful forty years ago, I could not helping wondering where these owners and their families have gone; what kinds of professions their descendants have adopted. Three or four generations of people must have lived in these old houses. I felt sad to see the impact of economic cycles on old generations of Chinese merchants who had no knowledge of international trade and politics. That’s probably why most Chinese families sent their children abroad for their education. They did not want to see their children made the same mistake of being overly optimistic and trusting of certainty.

Unfortunately, education systems had been designed to program youngsters as willing automaton or efficient workers. Only persistent black sheep could break out of the designed conformity and liberate their mind. Most of my Western educated cousins all fell into the old traps and troubles which their ancestors hoped they could avoid. People never learned from their cultural heritage and history as they had been brainwashed by the systems.

Looking at architectural changes around Chinatown, I have learned that life is full of uncertainty and that those little and ordinary people are just pawns in the bigger games played by invisible and powerful players on a global stage with the wealth of the whole world as a ransom. We have become the busy workers similar to a bee hive being controlled by the hive-mind. I do wonder what next year will bring. So, I would have to spend some time on Feng-Shui and remote viewing so that I could have some indications of future trends. My Chinese calendars would be very handy and useful tool; I might have to get some Chinese Feng Shui cures during my next visit.

All Chinatowns, from San Francisco to Singapore through Bangkok, have in common the fact that when you enter them you feel like you're somewhere else from where you were the second before 😄

I am sure that when you will hear music or smell a scent from that time, the old pictures of your memories will be present as if it were yesterday 😉

Thank you very much for your kind words. Those narrow lanes and old shops always reminded me of my childhood’s trips there with my grandmother and mother. I do miss the good old days and all those Chinese relatives who had passed away.

Have a nice day.

Strange, I thought Western educated Thais already achieved financial freedom as Bitcoin was introduced 10 years ago instead of getting trapped. Are they just greedy because the word enough simply don't exist in their dictionary and they want to build wealth enough to last several lifetime? Most doctoral students I met abroad who completed their first degree at Chulalongkorn or Mahidol are doing very well. There are many outstanding conglomerate families in Thailand and still so many poor people. Same in America. So many self-made millionaires and billionaires yet there are homeless people. Shocking! They made a movie about a homeless girl who got accepted into Harvard. These are outliers.

Hahaha. You’ll be surprised to know that most academic or professors don’t know about bitcoin!
Educated people who become civil servants will have financial security; they are privileged few only.

The main middle class people are still struggling and taken advantage of by bankers! The really rich people do know about bitcoin; they have highly educated financial advisers!

It’s very difficult to discuss about crypto to all my Western educated relatives and my friends!

I hope things will not be as bad as it could in the near future. Keep hoping and praying for some divine intervention. So many people will be suffering if worse comes to worse. Everyone will be affected.

I'm afraid situation will only get worse in the future because there are more bad than good people. Those bad people treasure money as if they can carry them into graves that they are willing to sacrifice others in order to get there. When they realize their mistake like King Midas, it'll be too late because everything they touch can't be consume as food or drink. Everything polluted or poisoned. Also, they will grow old alone to die with their treasured pile of money.

I really enjoy your walks. I am sure in the early sixties I walked up and down these streets with my mother. I wonder also what it looked like. I remember elephant parades probably around the palace area I am guessing. But Chinatown is such a cool place. Have you ever seen that back alley with all the metal scrap piled high?

If you get the feng shui news I hope we can get through what is to come.

So glad you like walking in Chinatown too. It’s a shame we,as kids, didn’t know about camera and photography! We could have old photos of the good old days!
Yeah, that area with old vehicle parts is in the north side of Chinatown called Talai Noi area, where very old houses still could be found. It’s one of the oldest Chinese immigrants’ residence by the river.

I hope you’ll be able to come walking here in the near future.

What do they write about in the Chinese calendar?
Do they give any recommendations?

Sorry for my late reply! I just see this comment.

Thank you for reminding me that I have to do some readings about next year’s astrology.

The Chinese calendar gives some basic recommendations on each month and some good and bad days which we have to be careful.
