Wednesday Walk: Night time walk along the skywalk in Bangkok

This Christmas season, the decorations in front of big shopping malls have been less glamorous than last year. But some prestigious malls still tried to make a show of the festive occasion to attract more customers. During the lockdown, people became used to online shopping and ordering food delivery. My favourite shopping malls in central Bangkok are the Emporium and Emquatier malls at the Prompong skytrain station. I had a nice walk along the spacious skywalk to observe the atmosphere around the entrances of these two malls, where people came to take photos with this year Christmas decorations.

The Emporium has the colourful theme of candies and lighted tunnel. The setting looks very cheerful and I would expect this venue is going to be very crowded at the end of the month. I was quite surprised that the mall dud not scale down on decoration budget; I did notice an incredible silence inside the mall; more than half the usual flow of customers has disappeared and I got the news that the property has been offered for sale to prospective investors.

The Emquartier has a big Christmas tree made of candies and colourful boxes. I found these bright and strong decorations too jazzy or noisy for my perception; I would have preferred the traditional green Christmas tree. But people seemed to be very excited with these colourful setup; it cheered me up a lot seeing families with small kids running around the place while trying to take group photos. But it was funny seeing them taking photos with their masks on their faces.

I found the views from the skytrain platform more calming and soothing for my over-charged sense perception. The faint sunset and distant view of the mall gave me a new perspective on life. Sometimes things seemed much nicer when there is some space and distance.

I took the train to Chidlom station so I could walk down the skywalk toward CentralWorld shopping mall. I just wanted to catch a glimpse of the Christmas decorations of another well known mall at the crossroad. Last year, the decorations were very exuberant and enormous. My evening trip was rather subdue as I could not see any large crowds of tourists as I did see last year. The vibes were dampened down quite a bit; that partying zest has not arrived yet. But I hope people who got fed up would turn out for the count down in front of CentralWorld this year.

I took the short walk from Chidlom station along the skywalk towards the crossroad in front of CentralWorld. From there I could see that their Christmas decorations have been scaled down to just having a tall tree instead of having all the area turned into an amusement park like last year. At least, there would be more space for having the big stage for pop concerts during the countdown. Last year there were over two hundred thousands people celebrating there. So, I hope this year the New Year celebration would be on schedule. This would be such a boost to tourism and people’s confidence.

ตอนต้นเดือนเราไปเดินเที่ยวแถวห้างเอ็มโพเรียม ที่พร้อมพงศ์ ไปเดินดูการตกแต่งหน้าห้างในช่วงฉลองปีใหม่นี้ เราก็ตื่นตาตื่นใจกับสีสรรและความอลังการของสองห้างใหญ่ที่พร้อมพงศ์มาก เขาทุ่มทุนกับการจัดสถานที่ให้สวยงามและสะดุดตามาก ทำให้มีคนไปเที่ยวถ่ายรูปกันมากกว่าที่เราคาดไว้ คนเดินหามุมถ่ายรูปกันเป็นกลุ่มและครอบครัว เรามองดูแล้วค่อนข้างดีใจที่คนเริ่มกล้าออกมาใช้ชีวิตตามปกติกัน จากนั้นเราก็ขึ้นรถไฟฟ้าไปลงที่สถานีชิดลม เพื่อเดินไปดูที่หน้าห้างเซ็นทรัลเวิล์ดว่าปีนี้จะมีการตกแต่งอย่างไร เราก็ลองถ่ายรูปกรุงเทพตอนกลางคืนด้วย เพราะกล้องไอโฟนไม่ค่อยเหมาะกับแสงน้อย เราก็เรียนรู้ไปเรื่อยๆ

เราเดินไปตามสกายว็อคจากสถานีชิดลม ตรงไปทางสี่แยกไฟแดง เดี๋ยวเดียวเราก็มองเห็นห้างเซ็นทรัลเวิล์ด ปีนี้เขาประหยัดค่าใช้จ่ายด้านการเตรียมสถานที่สำหรับฉลองปีใหม่ เราจำได้ว่าปีก่อนเขาจัดอย่างอลังการมาก มีต้นไม้ใหญ่สองต้น และลานหน้าห้างก็เป็นเหมือนสวนสนุกให้เด็กไปเล่น และมีการแสดงให้คนดูในตอนเย็น แต่เราก็หวังว่าปีนี้การนับถอยหลังเพื่อขึ้นปีใหม่ คงมีการจัดที่หน้าห้างเช่นเดิม และคงจะมีคนมาร่วมงานปาร์ตี้ส่งท้ายปีเก่าต้อนรับปีใหม่อย่างอุ่นหนาฝาคั่ง นี่จะช่วยกระตุ้นเศรษฐกิจและสร้างความมั่นใจให้คนมากขึ้นด้วย

เราก็แวะไปไหว้ศาลพระพรหมที่อยู่ตรงข้ามทางด้านซ้ายมือ เราก็เห็นบรรยากาศที่เงียบเหงามาก มีแต่คนไทยที่มากราบไหว้พระพรหมเพื่อขอพรปีใหม่ บรรยากาศต่างจากสมัยที่มีคนจีนมากันเป็นคันรถ นี่ประเทศไทยคงไม่เหมือนเดิม ถ้าเรายังต้องปิดประเทศไม่ให้นักท่องเที่ยวเข้ามาง่ายๆ เราก็หวังว่าปีหน้าทุกอย่างคงดีขึ้นเป็นลำดับ ถนนที่ผ่านหน้าโรงแรมไฮแอ็ทยังคงมีการจราจรมากในตอนกลางคืน โดยทั่วไปเราคิดว่าการส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวมีผลต่อสภาพทางสังคม และเศรษฐกิจของประเทศมากจริงๆ

On the left side of the crossroad is the shrine of Brahma, the famous Hindu god. This place used to be packed with Chinese tourists who came to pay respect and ask for blessings from Brahma. This shrine was built during the construction of the Erawan Hotel at this corner of the crossroad. Only after the shrine had been established that the construction went smoothly without any problems. There were many Singaporeans who got their requests fulfilled by Brahma; so they came back to pay their respect every year. Brahma was the god who rebuilt the world after Siva, the destroyer god, destroyed the world by natural disasters. So, people who need help with their problems would pray to him for blessings and solutions. I did ask him to look after the country and protect us all from the unhealthy virus infection. Please refrain from asking for political solutions to worldly problems!

The Hyatt Erawan Hotel has a very nice tearoom with an excellent bakery in the basement. No! James Bond never came here for tea.
