Ammonites remind me of a snail shell. I love them since I saw them for the first time in a photo in a geography textbook. I also like the regular stripes on the shells. So far I thought that ammonites were small, but a visit to the Geological Museum in Warsaw brought me new knowledge on this subject. You could see huge ammonites in the museum. See them in the two photos below.

The ammonite in the photo above is from the Cretaceous and Turon times. It was discovered in 1822. The huge ammonite in the photo below, however, dates from a similar time, in the Upper Cretaceous and Turon periods. It was discovered in 1954.

Amonit ze zdjęcia powyżej pochodzi z czasów Kredy i Turonu. Został odkryty w 1822 roku. Natomiast ogromny amonit ze zdjęcia poniżej pochodzi z podobnego czasu, z okresu Kredy górnej i Turonu. Został odkryty w 1954 roku.

I really like the variety of ammonite specimens in this display case. They have different colors, shapes, stripes.

Ammonites are a group of extinct cephalopods (Cephalopoda), usually with a symmetrical, planar-spiral shell. The shell of ammonites was made of aragonite and divided into two parts: a large, estranged living chamber and a fragmokon composed of a series of small chambers filled with gas.

Amonity to odgromada wymarłych głowonogów (Cephalopoda), przeważnie o symetrycznej, płaskospiralnej skorupie.

I saw in google what ammonite cephalopods looked like and they look a bit like small octopuses. Too bad they died out with the dinosaurs.

Zobaczyłam w google jak wyglądały głowonogi z amonitów i przypominają nieco małe ośmiornice. Szkody, że wymarły razem z dinozaurami.
