The statue of the Warsaw Mermaid and the Świętokrzyski Bridge in Warsaw / Pomnik Syrenki Warszawskiej i most Świętokrzyski w Warszawie

Today it was very hot, over 30 degrees Celsius, and the street fountains, through which children were running, were very popular, cooling themselves at the same time. I came to the Vistula River near the Świętokrzyski Bridge and when I was walking by the monument to the Warsaw Mermaid, I decided to take some photos of her and show her on my blog. This is one of the most characteristic monuments in Warsaw.

Dzisiaj żar lał się z nieba, było ponad 30 stopni Celcjusza i dużym powodzeniem cieszyły się uliczne fontanny, przez które przebiegały dzieci, chłodząc się przy tym. Przyjechałam nad Wisłę w okolicach Mostu Świętokrzyskiego i gdy przechodziłam obok pomnika Warszawskiej Syrenki postanowiłam zrobić jej kilka zdjęć i wam ją pokazać na blogu. To jeden z najbardziej charakterystycznych pomników w Warszawie.

This modernist monument by Ludwika Krasowska-Nitschowa was unveiled here in June 1939 by the Mayor of Warsaw Stefan Starzyński. The Mermaid holds a shield with an eagle wearing a crown and with the inscription "Warszawa" as well as a sword in her raised right hand. The sculptor's model was 23-year-old Krystyna Krahelska, later z participant of the Warsaw Uprising and the author of the lyrics to the popular song entitled "Hey boys,fix bayonets." The statue is 3.10 metre tall and was cast in Łopieński Brother's workshop in Warsaw. The statue was not damaged during the War.

Modernistyczny pomnik dłuta Ludwiki Krasowskiej-Nitschowej został odsłonięty w tym miejscu w czerwcu 1939 roku przez prezydenta Warszawy Stefana Starzyńskiego. Syrena trzyma tarczę z orłem w koronie i napisem "Warszawa" oraz miecz w uniesionej prawej ręce. Modelką rzeźbiarki była 23-letnia krystyna Krahelska, późniejsza uczestniczka Powstania Warszawskiego, autorka tekstu "Hej chłopcy bagnet na broń." Rzeźba o wysokości 3,10 m została odlana w warszawskiej pracowni Braci Łopieńskich. Podczas wojny pomnik nie uległ zniszczeniu.

I really like this monument, it's such a strong female symbol. The legend of the mermaid is also interesting. Reportedly, mermaids were swimming in the Atlantic Ocean a long time ago, and then in the Baltic Sea. One of them liked Copenhagen and stayed there, while the other kept swimming and liked Warsaw. She sat on the shore and sang beautiful songs that fishermen liked to listen to. One day she was kidnapped by a trader who wanted to sell her. The mermaid was saved by a fisherman who heard her crying very loudly. The mermaid was very grateful for the rescue and promised the fisherman that she would help him if he ever had trouble, protect him and that is why she keeps a sword and a shield on the monument. It is also a symbol of the mermaid's care over the inhabitants of Warsaw.

Bardzo lubię ten pomnik, to taki silny kobiecy symbol. Ciekawa jest też legenda o syrence. Podobno dawno temu syreny płynęły po oceanie Atlantyckim, a następnie po morzu Bałtyckim. Jednej z nich spodobała się Kopenhaga i tam została, a druga płynęła dalej i polubiła Warszawę. Siadała na brzegu i śpiewała piękne pieśni, których lubili słuchać rybacy. Pewnego dnia porwał ją handlarz, który chciał ją sprzedać. Syrenkę uratował pewien rybak, który usłyszał ją, gdy bardzo głośno płakała. Syrenka była bardzo wdzięczna za ratunek i obiecała rybakowi, że pomoże mu gdyby miał kiedyś kłopoty, obroni go i dlatego na pomniku trzyma miecz i tarczę. Jest to też symbol opieki syrenki nad mieszkańcami Warszawy.

I really like this monument, it's such a strong female symbol. When I was walking next to it, I noticed that on one side of the monument on the wall, on which it stands, there are fountains and ... children were swimming in them :D The water was maybe knee-deep, and two boys were lying and pretending to swim like in a pool. Next to them was their mother who was watching over them. It looked funny ;)

Gdy obok niego spacerowałam, zauważyłam, że z jednej strony pomnika na murze, na którym stoi znajdują się fontanny i... pływały w nich dzieci :D Wody było może do kolan, a dwóch chłopców leżało i udawało, że pływa jak w basenie. Obok nich stała mama, która ich pilnowała. Zabawnie to wyglądało ;)

When I was walking by this pavement, from which the water was gushing out, I plunged my legs into it and I felt immediately relieved, a pleasant chill. Such water is very cool when it is hot. I heard that in one of the districts of Warsaw - in Białołęka in Park Henrykowski, on the initiative of the residents (as part of the civic budget), a water playground was created. There is a shallow trough and various water gushing devices. These devices have interesting shapes, incl. one of them is a huge flower. I wish I lived closer, because on a day like today I would like to go to this playground and be sprayed with cool water there.

Gdy przechodziłam obok tego chodnika, z którego tryskała woda zanurzyłam sobie w niej nogi i momentalnie poczułam ulgę, przyjemny chłód. Bardzo fajnie taka woda chłodzi w upał. Słyszałam, że w jednej z dzielnic Warszawy - na Białołęce w Parku Henrykowskim z inicjatywy mieszkańców (w ramach budżetu obywatelskiego) powstał wodny plac zabaw. Znajduje się tam płytka niecka i rozmaite urządzenia tryskające wodą. Urządzenia te mają ciekawe kształty, m.in. jedno z nich przypomina kwiat. Żałuję, że nie mieszkam bliżej bo w taki dzień jak dzisiaj chętnie bym się przeszła na ten plac zabaw i dała się tam spryskać chłodną wodą.

And this is what the Świętokrzyski Bridge looks like. This is one of the most famous and most intensely frequented bridges in Warsaw. It connects the districts of Śródmieście and Praga Północ. It has a very modern design thanks to a range of white ropes. It is a cable-stayed bridge, built in 2000.

A tak wygląda Most Świętokrzyski. To jeden z najbardziej znanych i najintensywniej uczęszczanych mostów w Warszawie. Łączy ze sobą dzielnice Śródmieście i Pragę Północ. Ma bardzo nowoczesny design za sprawą wachlarzu białych lin. To most wantowy, powstał w 2000 roku.

There is an outdoor gym under the bridge. I saw a lot of people exercising on it (not bad for such heat), besides, this place is liked by people skating or on roller skates, there is a nice surface to ride around the bridge and under the bridge.

Pod mostem znajduje się siłownia plenerowa. Widziałam tam sporo ćwiczących na niej osób (nieźle jak na taki upał), poza tym miejsce to lubią osoby jeźdżące na deskorolce lub na rolkach, w okolicach mostu i pod mostem jest fajna nawierzchnia do jeżdżenia.

I noticed such a strange wooden sculpture in the vicinity. It was created within the framework of the "Art by the Shore" project, and its author is Aleksandra Pulińska. It's called "Thirsty". This is what its creator said about the sculpture:

The desire to possess and achieve is exhausting, and there is a void behind each successive gain. So, despite a thousand differences between us and all those who pray for rain every day somewhere far away, I feel that in the thirst for water, after which one will no longer want to drink, we are similar to each other.

W okolicy zauważyłam jeszcze taką dziwną drewnianą rzeźbę. Powstała w ramach projektu "Sztuka przy brzegu", a jej autorką jest Aleksandra Pulińska. Nosi tytuł "Spragniony". Tak o idei pomnika opowiedziała jego twórczyni:

Pragnienie posiadania i osiągania wycieńcza, a za każdą kolejną zdobyczą kryje się pustka. Mimo więc tysiąca różnic między nami i tymi wszystkimi, którzy gdzieś daleko co dzień modlą się o deszcz, czuję, że w pragnieniu wody, po której nie będzie chciało się już pić, jesteśmy sobie podobni.
