When nature and history merge into one wonderful place. The Belogradchik Rocks.

What the virus has achieved was to sweep away crowds from many of the overcrowded tourist sites.

Only for a while.

Because I'm not sure that if I visit this place again this year at the same time I took these pictures some time ago, it won't look the same - overcrowded.

IMG_1624.jpg

To the extent that a photo cannot be taken easily. Mostly at the entrance of this landmark.

IMG_1627.jpg

But maybe this very monument - natural, historical and cultural - has a reason to be so crowded. Especially during the active summer vacation season.

IMG_1631.jpg

I will leave the words of praise for the Internet and the advertisements of the travel agencies, and I will tell you what my view is of this place.

IMG_1629.jpg

(I left this photo unprocessed just to show you how difficult it is to take photos in this place, with so many people coming from all over.)

In general, Roman fortresses are not the monuments that impress, excite and attract me.

But this is a different thing here.

Something that made me that day drive 200 km. in one direction, and then another 200 in the other in just one day.

IMG_1632.jpg

Because this is somehow not the typical Roman fortress. Or at least it doesn't look like that these days. And apart from the fact that, unlike many other Roman fortresses on the territory of Bulgaria, the fortress walls of this one look completely restored and have acquired a finished look, it was once built on this inaccessible hill with trees and rocks.

And hills, rocks and trees + past, always bring me thoughts and feelings about mysteries and rituals, long forgotten by us, but whose spirit still lives in the places where they were performed.

IMG_1645.jpg

IMG_1678.jpg

Because apart from a fortress, this place is remarkable for that as well. And I would say, mostly for this:

IMG_1628.jpg

The reason to think about this place and these photos taken so long ago was another post published some time ago in the same community and this post was about Meteora in Greece.

And since I've been to both places, I can now make a comparison between them and say once again that there may not be a single unique natural place that is only in one place and only in one country. But in most cases, this information will be saved for you as tourists. Because no one wants you to know that you will not be taken to the most unique place in the world.

IMG_1635.jpg

IMG_1638.jpg

IMG_1636.jpg

Well, the rocks in both places are a mixture of sandstone and conglomerate. And huge buildings were built, again in both places - in Belogradchik - a fortress, in Meteora - monasteries.

IMG_1637.jpg

But, of course, the Belogradchik rocks are a wonderful place. This is a landmark that even I recommend and that I am very impressed with. Like I said, even from the fortress itself. Not to mention the rocks.

And on the forest paths one can even be alone and find a place where there are not so many people, and will be able to take pictures in peace.

And I guarantee you that there are too many, too many subjects to shoot, and you won't be disappointed in that regard. All these rocks in bizarre shapes, for which there are various legends, because, as I told you, rocks are always shrouded in mystery and folklore reminds us best of that.

So, I hope this post has helped your awareness and your decision to visit this wonderful place.

And I want to end with one of my favorite photos with a beautiful view of Belogradchik:

IMG_1686.jpg

This picture makes me laugh every time I see it, because the sign says: Don't lean on the railing.

Oh yes, I know, there are other nations that, like the Bulgarians, do not obey the rules. But my advice for such dangerous places as this is - do not be like the Bulgarians. 😀

Wow this is a great place. So beautiful with the rocks and trees. I recently went to Southern Utah and there are lots of great rock formations, only a few trees here and there.

Well, Bulgaria is known for its beautiful nature. For its mountains and forests. Forests are being cut down illegally, of course, but I still hope that something will be preserved for future generations.
