Day 18 of the 30-day Blogging Challenge (Part 2).

Are we obligated to help others?

I find today's question a bit complex to answer a mere yes or no. To do so would be overlooking numerous factors woven into the moral fabric of what it means to be a human being.

In my opinion, individuals are not obligated to do anything for others. Their obligation is to themselves first, then their offspring and parents, then their extended family. Anyone else outside their immediate household may be included, such as extended family members near and far.

The obligation to help others come into play when we speak about morality. I feel that being moral is a set of principles and values we as humans have designed for ourselves to live by. When each person accepts these principles of behavior, then they form a society that believes in abiding by these principles. Then we engage in the principles.

Our moral values as a society dictate that whenever we see another human being in need in terms of basic needs to ensure continued life, then we are obligated to help. Also, if we see anyone suffering any type of pain, such as when we see an accident, then we have a moral obligations to help relieve such pain or suffering.

There are other moral obligations that societies adopt to provide for continued existence of the human race. This can be obligations to reduce or prevent unnecessary conflicts to preserve loss of life or displacement of people from their homes.

But in order for morality to take hold and govern how we behave, we must first have the ability to feel sympathy and empathy. Without these two emotions, we can't put ourselves in their places and realize the extent of their pain and suffering.

Sympathy in helping others allows us to want to provide immediate help to others. Empathy goes further because it allows us to place ourselves in other individuals' issues or situations and imagine what we would do in that situation. It also allows us to say, "What if that were me. Would someone help in my situation."

So, the question as to whether we are obligated to help others depends on the situation we see ourselves in. In all things, we must first help ourselves realizing that no one else is truly obligated to do so.
