Day 15 of the 30-day Blogging Challenge (Part 2).

Most difficult language to learn

Today's topic for Day 15 deals with the language I feel is the most difficult to learn. While each person may give you a different answer, it depends on whether that person has ever attempted to learn a new language. It also depends how similar the other language is to your own.

Some people never even think about other languages if they don't need it in their daily lives.

For some, learning to speak other languages come easy; for others, much more difficult. However, I've read indexes that actually list languages in the order of difficulty to learn. I've always thought English was the most difficult language. However, I found out there are others above it, such as Russian and some forms of Chinese.

However, in my opinion I feel the most difficult language is American or U.S. English. I currently have a command of the English language only because it's my native tongue. American English is part of the Indo-European group of languages. There are two different English languages; British English and American English.

The reason I feel that American or U.S. English is difficult is due to the numerous complex rules and exceptions.

Growing up learning and speaking your native tongue is easy. For outsiders wishing to learn English, they should know these facts:

Sentence structure: The first thing I learned in elementary school is the 4 types of sentences:
Simple
Compound
Complex; and
Compound-Complex
Learning the structure of each can be complicated. For example, a simple sentences consists of a [SUBJECT plus VERB plus OBJECT[. Next you have the different types of words, such as dependent and independent clauses, conjunctions, and subordinates to connect sentences in a variety of ways. These can become a nightmare because they have other rules that control their usage.

Vocabulary Words: According to the Merriam-Webster who produces our Dictionary, there is estimated to be over a million words in the American English vocabulary. However, only about 470,000 entries are in the dictionary.1

Punctuation: British English is more tolerant of run-on sentences, called "comma splices" in American English. I see this frequently in content from non-English speaking authors. A run-on sentence is a group of words creating a continuous thought that just keeps going without a pause (comma) or complete stop (period).

Grammar: The rules for grammar are extensive. Subject-verb agreements are difficult for some people. Nouns, pronouns, singular, and plural. But the most difficult is when plural nouns are acting as a group or individuals within a group. An example is the word "team". Sometimes I just want think to myself, "who cares", but then I try to make sure I'm writing it correctly.

Parts of Speech: Parts of speech explain how a word is used in a sentence. In English, these are 8 main parts of speech:

  1. Noun
  2. Verb
  3. Adjective
  4. Pronoun
  5. Adverb
  6. Conjunction
  7. Preposition
  8. Interjection

  1. Sustantivo
  2. Verbo
  3. Adjetivo
  4. Pronombre
  5. Adverbio
  6. Conjunción
  7. Preposición
  8. Interjección

Sometimes I just want think to myself, "who cares", but then I try to make sure I'm writing it correctly.

Writing as correctly as possible helps to eliminate confusion. I remember a young woman who was trying to sell something a few years ago on one of those Facebook "Yard Sale" groups. Her grammar and spelling were so bad that I honestly could not understand what it was she was trying to sell. Yet, she was probably mystified as to why no one was interested in her item. 😂

lol. yes, that's exactly why I shake my head and try to do it correctly. Thanks so much for visiting. I'm enjoying SNOW today!

But with unusual weather for us, we now have rolling blackouts. So I'm off and on until tomorrow night.
