Fungi Friday: September 24th Fungi in the woods.

#fungifriday by @ewkaw

Yesterday I was thinking about a Fungi Friday post for today when it occurred to me I hadn't checked to see if the Lion's Mane was back.
I knew just where to look for it on my land. Off I went for a late afternoon short hike.

Hericium erinaceus

It was back and appeared as though it had been growing for a while and was discoloured.

For a approximately 3-4 years consecutively I have found it growing on the same old fallen Beach tree log and in the exact same spot on the log.

Lion's Mane is truly a stunning and interesting fungi. My pictures don't clearly show how visually amazing it truly it.
Lion's Mane is edible and has notable medicinal properties.

While weaving between trees on my return walk back to my cabin I noticed a couple of beautiful Birch Polypores.
Also called Hoof fungus as it resembles the shape of a horse's hoof.

Both of these have new pore surface growing on the bottom of the older Polypore.

I'm hoping for some rain. It will definitely help and facilitate in finding more Autumn mushrooms.

🍄Happy Fungi Friday🍄

It's really awesome I know where to find it and it's not to far from my cabin. A short hike
Seems to be faithful in returning.

I'm definitely sounds like that entire area is full of spores and ready to start fruiting.

Maybe one of these days I'll get enough self-confidence to go mushroom picking alone until then I'll only eat mushrooms picked by an extremely experienced person that I know has survived eating them for 50 years.

@ganjafarmer
I learned of a few edible mushrooms from my Grandmother. I have
many cherished memories of looking for Chicken of the woods, morels and chanterelles with her.
She also taught me of few wild edible plants.
I can truly understand why you wouldn't take chances/risk and you shouldn't.

I've actually known people who have made mistakes and ended up dead over picking the wrong mushroom.

However as an elderly individual I'm sure that it could have possibly been entirely on purpose. So much experience, however when they needed the wrong mushroom it was at hand.

Awesome, that lion's mane is still good to eat. Also if you find them too brown you can still harvest them and soak them in alcohol for a tincture to get their medicinal properties.
