Marshmellows of the Woods

Doing the rounds in park Clingendael, The Hague a couple of years back I found this Chicken of the Woods or Laetiporus sulphureus hanging on a dead tree looking all delicious. I felt compelled to give it a pink light painting treatment (it was pale orange otherwise) that evoked something sweet.

On the second one I added optical fibers and on the third I just got cheecky.

Wow and you found a perfect specimen to light paint on too. I would have been too excited and harvested it before any light painting would have happened :-)

Only after doing research for this post did I find out what it was and that it was edible. I'm not a fungi connoisseur so I wouldn't dare eat one without a second opinion. I did just read that it produces the Laetiporus sulphureus lectin (LSL) which exhibits haemolytic and haemagglutination activities. That doesn't sound good.. but it sure does look pretty.

The worst that can happen is a bit of gas from the sulphur. But that is only if you eat way too much at a time.

ok. I might have a go if I see it again.

I make buffalo chicken strips out of it. Just cut thin strips of it, then batter it and coat it in buffalo sauce. The nice thing about this is you can then freeze it for later when it is out of season.

you can rely on what @sketch.and.jam says, he is our best fungi expert -- especially when it comes to the edible side, cooking recipes etc.

besides that, this is one of his fave fungis to cook!
ps. thanx for sharing your images in FL. you definitely raise the quality bar! and I like that.

only if they are known ones. i'd prefer to see new posts from you, other than you would try some fungi that can be tried only once :P
(hope my grammar construction is ok here?..) just joking!

Fungi and lp work so well. Especially when you are involved in the lp aspect.

They absorb light so well. Just like they do flavors. And if you ever have a funny one you can absorb the earth...

I've absorbed some in your country mate. I couldn't even peel an orange. I knew I shouldn't have strayed from the recommended dosage 😂😂

Haha.. Yeah, they're tricky that way as it sometimes takes a while to kick in depending on your metabolism and on what you've eaten before.

Some smartshops would sell the strongest possible strains to newbs.. Not a good idea. Selling shrooms is now forbiden in smartshops but there's a loophole that allows them to sell truffels instead that work just as well. Or home growing kits.

As I said in an earlier comment they helped me a great deal 7 years ago. But it's not something I'd do recreationally. It was intense... Or maybe I just don't want to ruin the experience I had by making it a regular occurrence.

I saw a documentary on this very thing a while back about a couple of blokes who made the change from mushie growing to truffles. I don't think they're short of cash now :)
The bloke in the head shop did warn us not to have too many and told us to go and find a field somewhere. We found a field but didn't heed his advise on dosage.
I doubt I'd go there now but I was very surprised how I snapped out of it so quickly and felt 100% normal that evening. Not like acid. That would make me a bit skewed for a few days :)
Fingers crossed you get some more mushrooms to photograph this autumn as this is delightful.
