A neo-noir that is not too bad but not excellent either - Reminiscence [ENG/ESP]

It is very common to think about what the planet would be like if the sea level began to rise and everything as we know it changes forever, everything would be totally different and we would live with the constant fear of burning underwater. Reminiscence presents us with a world where this happens and now all the cities look like Venice but multiplied by ten and where the rich are the ones with the best quality of life, typical of plot with a decadent world, despite being a plot that would enter perfect in my tastes, Reminiscence, manages to get me into his world but seeing it differently has certain things that slow down a little investment in history.
The story introduces us to Nick, a war veteran who currently has a business that helps people to relive their most precious memories, one day a woman enters and captures Nick's attention. This woman disappears and Nick will be forced to find out what happened to Mae, the woman he loves, we will see how far Nick is able to go to find out the truth of what really happened. It's not a revolutionary plot by any means but seeing Wolveri... Hugh Jackman playing a kind of independent detective makes it worthwhile.
The story that surrounds the film is very interesting, enough to make me believe that this story is taken from a book, although I do not like the theme of the rising sea and that everything is under it in this film becomes interesting and makes me want to know more about that world. Constantly in the movie a war is mentioned but it doesn't do more than just mention it and that's it, they leave the war event that took place before the flood very much in the air, a topic that doesn't affect the story in almost nothing but since you bother to mention it repeatedly a little more context wouldn't be bad at all.
Let's go to what really matters, Nick meets Mae and little by little a functional relationship develops but without many bases, let's say it was love at first sight. But when we advance a few minutes into the film it is revealed to us that all that was Nick's memories and that Mae disappeared just like that (don't worry none of this is a spoiler because the synopsis itself tells you). The whole plot that develops around the search for Mae is more or less okay, there are only two things that don't allow me to see well the whole journey that Nick makes to discover the truth.
First if we go to the root of Nick's quest it could be considered obsession, basically Nick is devastated by what Mae did and notices from a mile away but the way Nick focuses on it and the decisions he makes makes makes me think it was more out of infatuation than love. Nick loved Mae but to get to such a point with such a short time knowing her, I don't know, it can be interpreted in different ways since at the end of the day movies are an art that we interpret in different ways but I kind of don't quite believe the relationship between the two characters.
As Nick advances in his search for answers he discovers a plot bigger than he thought and that he was just an obstacle to overcome. I can't analyze the whole plan that the director put together for the movie because I'm not a screenwriter and my simple opinion is worthless but I dare to say that I have seen better plots and with a little more intrigue in between, by saying this I'm not taking away the merit of the movie because it is entertaining and who didn't like to see Rebecca Ferguson and Hugh Jackman together again?
One of my favorite characters in the movie was Emily, played by Thandie Newton, she was one of the best in the movie. This character, dare I say, functions as Nick's anchor to keep his feet on the ground, or what's left of it. Aside from being the savior of the story her role as Nick's only friend and that despite being almost bankrupt with Nick's business she is still by his side for more than just a job, that and she is amazing as the character of Emily.
Although it is not innovative and its plot has a somewhat lame basis and apart from that it has incredible script conveniences, somehow, you manage to enjoy the film. Reminiscence is entertaining that can't be denied but it's not a marvel either; in my case I have a guilty pleasure for this kind of detective plots I have always liked and will continue to like but looking at it another way I don't think you lose much if you don't see this movie. But what I do believe very blindly is that it's worth seeing Wolverine as a detective and Rebecca Ferguson alongside him.

Es muy común pensar en cómo sería el planeta si comenzara a subir el nivel del mar y todo como lo conocemos cambia para siempre, todo sería totalmente diferente y viviríamos con el constante temor de quemar bajo el agua. Reminiscencia nos presenta un mundo donde esto ocurre y ahora todas las ciudades se parecen a Venecia pero multiplicado por diez y donde los ricos son los que tienen mejor calidad de vida, típico de trama con un mundo decadente, a pesar de ser una trama que entraría perfecta en mis gustos, Reminiscencia, logra adentrarme en su mundo pero viéndolo de otro modo tiene ciertas cosas que frenan un poco la inversión en la historia.
La historia nos presenta a Nick un veterano de guerra que actualmente tiene un negocio con el que ayuda a las personas a revivir sus recuerdos más preciados, un día entra una mujer que logra captar la atención de Nick. Dicha mujer desaparece y Nick se verá obligado a saber qué pasó con Mae, la mujer a la que ama, veremos hasta donde es capaz de llegar Nick para saber la verdad de lo que realmente sucedió. No es una trama revolucionaría ni mucho menos pero ver a Wolveri… Hugh Jackman interpretando a una especie de detective independiente hace que valga la pena.
La historia que rodea la película es muy interesante, lo suficiente como hacerme creer que esta historia es saca de un libro, aunque no me guste mucho el tema del crecimiento del mar y que todo quede debajo del mismo en esta película se vuelve interesante todo este tema y hace que quiera conocer más sobre ese mundo. Constantemente en la película se menciona un guerra pero no hace más solo eso mencionarla y ya, dejan muy por el aire el acontecimiento bélico que tuvo lugar antes de la inundación, un tema que no afecta la historia en casi nada pero ya que te molestas en mencionarlo repetidas veces un poco más de contexto no vendría nada mal.
Vamos a lo que realmente importa, Nick conoce a Mae y poco a poco se va desarrollando una relación funcional pero sin muchas bases, digamos que fue amor a primera vista. Pero cuando avanzamos unos minutos en la película se nos revela que todo eso eran recuerdos de Nick y que Mae desapareció así sin más (no se preocupen nada de esto es spoiler porque la misma sinopsis te los dice). Toda la trama que se desarrolla en torno a la búsqueda de Mae está más o menos bien, solo hay dos cosas que no me permiten ver bien todo el viaje que hace Nick para descubrir la verdad.
Primero si nos vamos a la raíz de la búsqueda de Nick podría llegar a considerarse obsesión, básicamente Nick está devastado por lo que hizo Mae y nota desde un kilómetro de distancia pero la manera en la que Nick se enfoca en eso y las decisiones que toma me hace pensar que fue más por capricho que por amor. Nick amaba a Mae pero llegar a tal punto con tan poco tiempo conociéndola, no sé, puede interpretarse de diferentes maneras ya que al fin y al cabo las películas son un arte que interpretamos de diferentes formas pero como que no termino de creer la relación entre ambos personajes.
A medida que Nick avanza en su búsqueda por respuestas va descubriendo un complot más grande de lo que creía y que él solo era un obstáculo a superar. No puede analizar todo el plan que la directora armo para la película porque no soy guionista y mi simple opinión no vale de nada pero sí me atrevo a decir que he visto mejores tramas y con un poco más de intriga de por medio, con decir esto no les estoy quitando el mérito a la película ya que es entretenida y, ¿a quién no le gustó ver a Rebecca Ferguson y Hugh Jackman juntos otra vez?
Uno de mis personajes favoritos en la película fue Emily, interpretada por Thandie Newton, fue de lo mejor de la película. Este personaje, me atrevo a decir, que funciona como el ancla de Nick para mantener los pies sobre la tierra, o lo que queda de ella. A parte de ser la salvadora de la historia su papel como única amiga de Nick y que a pesar de estar casi en banca rota con el negocio de Nick sigue a su lado por algo más que un simple trabajo, eso y que es increíble el personaje de Emily.
A pesar no ser innovadora y que su trama tenga una bases un tanto cojas y aparte de eso tenga increíbles conveniencias de guion, de alguna forma, logras disfrutar la película. Reminiscencia es entretenida eso no se puede negar pero tampoco es una maravilla; en mi caso tengo un placer culposo por este tipo de tramas detectivescas siempre me han gustado y seguirán gustándome pero viéndolo de otro modo no creo que pierdas mucho si no ves esta película. Pero lo que sí creo muy ciegamente es que vale la pena ver a Wolverine como detective y a Rebecca Ferguson junto a él.
