Lou: a little girl's life in the hands of a family secret

Lou, it's a movie that turned a thousand schemes, here I make a clarification and that anyone who wants to see this film, I recommend you not to read this review. If you have no idea what it's about, go ahead, but I warn that I will pass data that may be disappointing if you love the intrigue and then decide to see it.

Lou, the film that is available on Netflix and was released in September of this same year (2022), gathers several characteristics that I like in a movie: mystery, adventure, action, nature, particular lives, movie length equal to or less than two hours, clarity in the plot.

Although in some aspect I noticed it somewhat "linear", that is, there could have been some other character, something more complex, a parallel secondary story, it managed to catch me because in fact, there are secrets in the story.

In addition, it gives us an interesting perspective on this relationship that can be insincere between mother and son, and makes it very clear how beyond a truncated, hurt bond, there can be unconditional love for future bonds, as it happens with Lou's granddaughter and daughter-in-law.

By the presentation, I was expecting to like this movie and I did!!!! Happy about that, as it's not something that always happens to me!.

Lou, es una película que me dio vuelta mil esquemas, aquí hago una aclaración y que quien quiera ver este film, le recomiendo no leer esta reseña. Si no tienes idea de qué se trata, adelante, pero aviso que pasaré datos que pueden resultarte decepcionantes si te encanta la intriga y luego decides verla.

Lou, el film que está disponible en Netflix y que fue estrenado en septiembre de este mismo año (2022), reúne varias características que me gustan en una película: misterio, aventura, acción, naturaleza, vidas particulares, duración de la película igual o menor a dos horas, claridad en la trama.

Aunque en algún aspecto la noté algo “lineal”, es decir, podría haber habido algún otro personaje, algo más complejo, una historia secundaria paralela, logró atraparme porque de hecho, hay secretos en la historia.

Además, nos ofrece una interesante perspectiva de esta relación que puede resultar poco sincera entre madre e hijo, y deja muy en claro cómo más allá de un vínculo truncado, lastimado, puede haber un amor incondicional por vínculos futuros, como ocurre con la nieta y nuera de Lou.

Por la presentación, esperaba que esta película me gustara y así fue!! Feliz por eso, ya que no es algo que me ocurra siempre!

What I like most about this film, beyond the fact that it takes place between forests and mountains, is that there is a hidden story in the background, and that is that Lou (Allyson Janney) turns out to be the grandmother of Vee (Ridley Asha Bateman), a girl kidnapped by a man in theory unknown, but... is he, or is he really closer than everyone thinks?

The story introduces us to Lou as an exemplary and excellent CIA spy, she shows herself as such, so in her life and profession she has taken all the necessary steps, especially in her career to stand out. Thus, on her way Lou ended up getting close to a man who turned out to be the father of her child (without looking for such an outcome), in fact she had to get close for her job to such extreme levels, that she ended up pregnant.

Lo que más me gusta de esta película, más allá de que transcurre entre bosques y montañas, es que hay de fondo una historia oculta, y es que Lou (Allyson Janney) resulta ser la abuela de Vee (Ridley Asha Bateman), una niña secuestrada por un hombre en teoría desconocido, pero… ¿lo es, o en verdad es más cercano de lo que todos creen?

La historia nos presenta a Lou como una ejemplar y excelente espía de la CIA, ella misma se muestra así, por lo que en su vida y profesión ha dado todos los pasos necesarios, especialmente en su carrera para destacar. De este modo, en su camino Lou terminó por acercarse a un hombre que resultó ser el padre de su hijo (sin buscar tal desenlace), de hecho tuvo que acercarse por su trabajo a niveles tan extremos, que terminó embarazada.

So this man wants revenge. He has a daughter who is with her mom, Hannah (Jurnee Smollet). They both live close to Lou, their grandmother, their mother-in-law, but... do they know it? NO! They have no idea of the blood bond between these women, nor of the masked love Lou has for them.

De ese embarazo nació un niño, que se convirtió en un hombre resentido que cargaba con el desamor de una madre que jamás deseó descendencia, pero que tuvo que aceptarla por las circunstancias.

Este hombre, Phillip (Logan Marshall-Green), se presenta como alguien profundamente dolido que aun no puede superar dolores de su infancia, por lo que vemos a una persona lastimada por la ausencia y crueldad de una madre no solo poco presente, sino también dispuesta a abandonarlo.

I repeat, although at a certain point it seems to me a very simple film, I liked it a lot, and there is something that caught me, and it is this relationship "mother-son " that sometimes just can't be. In this way, I asked myself some questions:

How much can a bad relationship with our mother affect us? What do we expect from a mother that she won't necessarily give us? What will we make other people pay for not receiving the love we expected to receive from mom? Can a pain originating in the mother-child relationship that was never addressed as a child be healed as an adult?

Repito, aunque en cierto punto me parece una película muy sencilla, me gustó mucho, y hay algo que me atrapó, y es esta relación ”madre-hijo/a” que a veces simplemente no puede ser. De este modo, me planteé algunos interrogantes:

¿Cuánto puede afectarnos una mala relación con nuestra madre? ¿Qué esperamos de una madre que no necesariamente nos dará? ¿Qué le haremos pagar a otras personas por no recibir el amor que esperábamos recibir de mamá? ¿Se puede sanar de adulto un dolor originado en la relación madre-hijo que nunca se abordó de niñ@?

This movie reminded me of the film "Run", a story where an obsessed mother molds her daughter to "handicap" her. Complex, but it also refers to this a priori sacred relationship, which sometimes ends up destroying the very integrity of the person. Its concept also bears some similarity to the one addressed by the Spanish series "Sagrada Familia", which I recently reviewed.

Esta película me recordó al film “Run”, una historia en donde una madre obsesionada moldea a su hija para “discapacitarla”. Compleja, pero que también hace referencia a esta relación a priori sagrada, que a veces termina por destruir la propia integridad de la persona. Su concepto también guarda cierta similitud con el que aborda la serie española “Sagrada Familia”, de la cual hice una reseña recientemente.
