Happiest Season | Film Review
Ever since I saw the trailer for this movie on Sony channel, I wanted to see it and today I finally did. Happiest Season is presented as just another Christmas comedy, one of those we are used to seeing during this season. However, the film touches on a subject that is still taboo in society and tends to shock the most conservative.
Desde que vi el trailer de esta película en el canal Sony, quise verla, y hoy por fin lo he hecho. Happiest Season (La estación de la felicidad) se presenta como una comedia navideña más, de esas que estamos acostumbrados a ver en esa temporada. Sin embargo, la película toca un tema que aún sigue siendo tabú en la sociedad y que tiende a escandalizar a los más conservadores.
The film focuses on the story of Abby and Harper, two girls who are in a happy relationship and live together. On Christmas Eve Harper invites Abby to spend the holidays with her family, which Abby sees as the perfect opportunity to propose. What Abby doesn't know is that Harper's family is not only conservative, but also keeps up social appearances, and is obviously unaware of Harper's sexual preferences.
La película se centra en la historia de Abby y Harper, dos chicas que tienen una feliz relación de pareja y viven juntas. En vísperas de navidad Harper invita a Abby a pasar las festividades con su familia, lo que Abby considera la oportunidad perfecta para proponerle matrimonio. Lo que Abby no sabe, es que la familia de Harper no solo es de costumbres conservadoras, sino que también mantiene las apariencias sociales, y obviamente desconoce de las preferencias sexuales de Harper.
In an apparent model family, secrets that could generate a scandal before society are kept hidden. Winning the affection and recognition of her parents justifies Harper having to hide what really makes her happy. In the meantime, she keeps up appearances, even though it might hurt Abby's feelings.
En una aparente familia modelo, los secretos que pudiesen generar un escandalo ante la sociedad, se mantienen ocultos. Ganarse el afecto y el reconocimiento de sus padres, justifica para Harper tener que esconder lo que a ella realmente la hace feliz. Mientras tanto, guarda las apariencias, a pesar de que con ello pueda lastimar los sentimientos de Abby.
Abby and Harper's story reflects what may be experienced, or suffered, by those who, for fear of rejection, criticism, and being judged by society, decide to live "in the closet" and carry the heavy burden of a double life.
La historia de Abby y Harper refleja lo que pueden experimentar, o sufrir, aquellos que, por miedo al rechazo, a las críticas y a ser juzgados por la sociedad, deciden vivir "dentro del clóset" y llevar la pesada carga de una doble vida.
In my opinion, Happiest Season, is a kind of trojan horse, that behind the appearance of a tender romantic Christmas comedy, has really wanted to show another face of the LGBT+ community, wanted to show their reality, their human side, how difficult it can be to "come out" knowing that outside a pack of wolves awaits them, hungry to devour their bones and destroy their morals.
En mi opinión, Happiest Season, es una especie de caballo de troya, que tras la apariencia de una tierna comedia romántica navideña, ha querido realmente mostrar otra cara de la comunidad LGBT+, a querido mostrar su realidad, su lado humano, lo difícil que puede ser "salir del clóset" a sabiendas de que afuera los espera una jauría de lobos hambrientos por devorar sus huesos y destruir su moral.
To pretend to be what you are not in order to maintain a social status or to keep the affection of your parents and/or friends, is to sacrifice inner peace, happiness, and life itself. In the film this happens by recognizing or not recognizing that you are gay, or that you can get divorced, or that you can abandon your profession to pursue a passion, or that you can do what you always wanted to do but that social stereotypes condemn.
The message is clear, be happy with yourself no matter what anyone says
Fingir ser aquello que no eres por mantener un status social o por conservar el afecto de tus padres y/o amigos, es sacrificar la paz interior, la felicidad, y la vida misma. En la película esto pasar por reconocer o no que eres gay, o que te puedes divorciar, o que puedes abandonar tu profesión por perseguir una pasión, o que puedes hacer aquello que siempre quisiste pero que los estereotipos sociales condenan.
El mensaje es claro, se feliz contigo mismo sin importar el que dirán.
