My personal review of: Wrong Turn at Tahoe 2009. [Eng - Esp]

A few days ago I had the opportunity to see for the second time, a film that captured part of my attention; and I say part because although I am aware that it is not one of the best in the broad and demanding genre of the mafia, I considered it acceptable to review my impressions about it. It is Wrong turn at tahoe, also known by its Spanish name "Asesinato en la mafia"; a film by French director Franck Khalfoun and dating from 2009.

Hace pocos días tuve la oportunidad de ver por segunda ocasión, una cinta que captó parte de mi atención; y digo parte porque aunque estoy consciente que no es de las mejores del amplio y exigente género de la mafia, la consideré aceptable para reseñar mis impresiones sobre esta. Se trata de Wrong turn at tahoe, también conocida por su nombre para Hispanoamérica "Asesinato en la mafia"; un film del director francés Franck Khalfoun y que data del año 2009.

Every man of power has his trusted worker, in this case the dangerous mafioso of intermediate rank, named Vincent (played by Miguel Ferrer), runs his "business" on wheels, he is a guy who is somewhat quiet but determined, even with a certain boast of confidence and arrogance; but behind him there is someone who has his back very well, it is Joshua (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.) someone who meets the attributes that any boss requires.

Todo hombre de poder cuenta con su trabajador de confianza, en este caso el peligroso mafioso de rango intermedio, llamado Vincent (interpretado por Miguel Ferrer), lleva su "negocio" sobre ruedas, es un tipo que se muestra algo callado pero decidido, incluso con un cierto alarde de confianza y prepotencia; pero detrás de él hay alguien que le cuida muy bien las espaldas, se trata de Joshua (interpretado por Cuba Gooding Jr.) alguien que reúne los atributos que cualquier jefe requiere.

Joshua's first virtue is his loyalty to Vincent, an almost extinct quality that is highly valued in this particular profession. But besides that, he is an efficient man in his work, doing prudently and without boasting, the tasks entrusted to him. However, in these men accustomed to danger, there are feelings that seem to rob them of their peace of mind. I have heard that saying that "everyone fights with their own inner demons"; perhaps so much dedication to work takes its toll on them.

La primera virtud de Joshua es su lealtad hacia Vincent, una cualidad casi extinta y que es muy valorada en este particular oficio. Pero además de eso, es un hombre eficiente en su trabajo, haciendo de manera prudente y sin alardes, las tareas que se le encomiendan. No obstante en estos hombres acostumbrados al peligro, existen sentimientos que al parecer les roban la tranquilidad. He escuchado ese dicho de que "cada quien lucha con sus propios demonios internos"; quizás tanta dedicación al trabajo les pasa factura.

I must admit that this is one of the performances in which Cuba Gooding Jr. does something different from what I had seen from him; and he did his job of making me empathize with Joshua, an almost expressionless guy but very skilled with guns and in hand-to-hand fights. I think Cuban steals my attention, as he doesn't show off but knows how to punish the most mouthy ha,ha,ha. However Joshua also has a past that makes him reflect, on the verge of wanting to retire, something that does not exist within that profession.

Debo admitir que es una de las actuaciones en las que Cuba Gooding Jr. hace algo distinto a lo que había visto de él; y cumplió con su cometido de hacerme empatizar con Joshua, un tipo casi inexpresivo pero muy hábil con las armas y en las peleas cuerpo a cuerpo. Creo que Cuba se roba mi atención, ya que no alardea pero sabe cómo castigar a los más bocones ja,ja,ja. Sin embargo Joshua también tiene un pasado que lo hace reflexionar, al borde de querer retirarse, algo que no existe dentro de esa profesión.

Then after a few scenes, I realize that Vincent also lets out his human side, but this time I would say that this is his weak point. I could identify the breaking point that triggers the confrontation between the mobsters, but there are scenes that keep your attention, why Joshua wants to retire, beyond wanting to spend more time with his son. What's strange to me is that they don't reveal it until very late in the film, which can eventually throw you off track.

Entonces luego de unas cuantas escenas, caigo en cuenta que Vincent también deja salir su lado humano, pero en esta ocasión yo diría que más bien, es su punto débil. Pude identificar el punto de quiebre que hace desencadenar la confrontación entre los mafiosos, pero hay escenas que mantienen la atención, del por qué Joshua quiere el retiro, más allá del querer pasar más tiempo con su hijo. Lo que me extraña es que, no lo dejan entrever sino cuando está muy avanzada la cinta, por lo cual puede desubicar a uno eventualmente.

It was strange to see dangerous guys who then manifest the simplest of carnal weaknesses; moreover, after seeing the relentless Vincent take out the reckless mobster Franki (played by Noel Guglielmi), he leaves, in my opinion, some loose ends with his old friend Jeff (Michael Sean Tighe); it is also remarkable, the constant atmosphere of darkness or low light, in which the film takes place, most of which, almost all are night scenes.

Fue extraño ver a tipos peligrosos que, luego manifiestan las más sencillas debilidades carnales, además; luego de ver al implacable Vincent quitar del medio al mafioso temerario de Franki (interpretado por Noel Guglielmi), deja en mi opinión, algunos cabos sueltos con su viejo amigo Jeff (Michael Sean tighe); es también notable, la constante atmosfera de oscuridad o baja luz, en la que transcurre la película, que en su mayoría ,casi todas son escenas nocturnas.
