The best movies of my country or the year everything changed (2013) 🇻🇪🎬
It wasn't easy to decide between three questions to participate in @ocd's contest, I wanted to answer all three but honestly, I wanted to, first talk about some villains I love, but it's quite complicated to talk about a villain without naming a few and that surely many more would name. Then I thought about writing about a genre, but since my favorite genre is drama it wasn't going to be at all easy to talk about this without me doing a thesis on why. I like drama more than horror or romance, plus the drama genre encompasses too much. I had immediately discarded the best film in my country because I am not such a fan of Venezuelan cinema. After all, it mostly deals with violence and with a vocabulary often. However, I remembered that there are several gems within the films of my country and that is why I have decided to make a top 3 of the best:
No fue fácil decidirme entre tres preguntas para participar en el concurso de @ocd, quise responder las tres pero sinceramente quería, primero hablar de algunos villanos que amo, pero es bastante complicado hablar de un villano sin nombrar a unos cuantos y que seguramente muchos más nombrarían. Luego pensé en escribir acerca de un género, pero como mi género favorito es el drama no iba a resultar nada fácil hablar de esto sin que hiciera una tesis de porque.me gusta más el drama que el terror o el romance, además que el género dramático abarca demasiado. Había descartado inmediatamente la mejor película de mi país, porque no soy tan fanática del cine venezolano porque en su gran mayoría trata de violencia y con un vocabulario diez. Sin embargo, recordé que existen varias joyitas dentro de las películas de mi país y es por eso que he decidido hacer un top 3 de las mejores:

In Venezuela we boast of having the most beautiful landscapes and the most beautiful women, it is a national pride to say the number of crowns of beauty contests that the country has taken worldwide, whenever it comes up we stamp it on the face of a foreigner. However, it is not the only pride we have, and I do not think it is the greatest, the reality is that what Venezuelans love the most is Baseball. Although it seems to be from the past, it is no longer the same furor that I remember from ten years ago.
En Venezuela nos jactamos de tener los más hermosos paisajes y las mujeres más bellas, es un orgullo nacional decir la cantidad de coronas de concursos de belleza que el país se ha llevado a nivel mundial, siempre que sale a colación se lo estampamos en la cara a algún extranjero. Sin embargo, no es el único orgullo con el que contamos, y tampoco creo que sea el más grande, la realidad es que lo que los venezolanos aman más es el Béisbol. Aunque pareciera del pasado, pues ya no es el mismo furor que recuerdo de hace diez años atrás.

In Venezuela, the Venezuelan Baseball League, has two flagship teams, the eternal rivals: "Leones del Caracas" and "Navegantes del Magallanes", and generally you are one team or the other, here you ship and your parents are already designating the team you will go to (no kidding). It is for this reason that Luis Carlos Hueck decided to make a movie based on the forbidden love between a Caraquista and a Magallanera (very Romeo and Juliet).
En Venezuela, la liga de Béisbol venezolana, cuánta con dos equipos insignes, los eternos rivales: Leones del Caracas y Navegantes del Magallanes, y generalmente eres de uno u otro equipo, aquí naves y ya tus padres están designando el equipo al que le irás (no es broma). Es por esta razón que Luis Carlos Hueck decide hacer una película basada en el amor prohibido entre un Caraquista y una magallanera (muy a lo Romeo y Julieta).
Andrés, a die-hard fan of the Leones del Caracas, wins tickets to see the game of his favorite team against "Los Navegantes del Magallanes", but in the box of the enemy team. There he meets Julissa, a beautiful girl who is a fan of the Navegantes and with whom Andres falls madly in love, so he decides to make her fall in love with him and for that, he must make her believe that they share the same fanaticism for the same team.
Andrés, un aguerrido fanático de los Leones del Caracas, se gana unas entradas para ver el partido de su equipo favorito contra "Los Navegantes del Magallanes", pero en el palco del equipo enemigo. Allí conoce a Julissa, un hermosa muchacha que es fanática de los Navegantes y de la que Andrés queda perdidamente prendado, por lo que se decide enamorarla y para eso debe hacerle creer que comparten el mismo fanatismo por el mismo equipo.
The film is a romantic comedy with very humorous situations because besides being from different teams, they are also from different social classes. It is a movie for the whole family, healthy fun and very well made. It is not made to receive an Oscar for best foreign film, but it is definitely a very well-made film that reflects the good-natured, comical, and happy spirit of the average Venezuelan. It is our idiosyncrasy reflected in a film and that is the reason why it has set a milestone by becoming the highest-grossing Venezuelan film in our country.
La película es una comedia romántica con situaciones muy jocosas, porque además de ser de diferentes equipos, también son de diferentes clases sociales. Es una película para toda la familia, de sana diversión y muy bien hecha. No está hecha para recibir un Oscar para mejor película extranjera, pero en definitiva si es una película muy bien lograda, que refleja el espíritu bonachón, cómico y feliz del venezolano promedio. Es nuestra idiosincrasia reflejada en una película y es la razón por la que ha marcado un hito al convertirse en la película venezolana más taquillera de nuestro país.
Besides being a film clearly made for fun, it also left us with a message that was important for the time: we were in 2013, a year in which the political landscape of the country was divided by two sectors opposition and officialism, and the film left us saying that we lived in a giant country, one in which there was room for all teams. Such metaphor touched all of us in our hearts, we needed to be shown that there was still alight. After that year, things changed forever, but I will tell you more about that later.
Además de ser una película claramente realizada para la diversión, también nos dejaba un mensaje que era importante para la época: estábamos en 2013, un año en el que el panorama político del país estaba dividido por dos sectores oposición y oficialismo, y la película nos dejaba dicho que vivíamos en un país gigante, en uno en el que había espacio para todos los equipos. Tal metáfora nos llegó a todos a nuestros corazones, necesitábamos que nos mostraran que aún existía una luz. Luego de ese año, las cosas cambiaron para siempre, pero ya les comentaré más adelante.
La casa del fin de los tiempos
Horror is not one of my favorite genres, however, I could tell you without a doubt that if any of the genres captures my attention, I have to see it. The year I chose to see this film I did it because many people had already recommended it to me, plus it had a strong media campaign, so I gave in and went to the theater with rather low expectations of the film but I got a wonderful piece.
El terror no es de mis géneros favoritos, sin embargo, podría decirles sin que me quede la menor duda, es que si alguna del género capta mi atención, tengo que verla. El año que escogí ver esta película lo hice porque ya muchas personas me habían recomendado verla, además que tuvo una fuerte campaña mediática, así que cedí y me dirigí al cine con expectativas más bien bajas del filme pero me conseguí con una pieza maravillosa.
Dulce, a mother who lives with her husband Juan José and her two children in an old house where paranormal apparitions occur. One of her children disappears and Dulce is sentenced to 30 years in prison for the disappearance of her children. After many years and already quite old, she returns home to spend the rest of her days under house arrest in a house where she would not like to be, and with the help of a priest, they decide to end the mystery of that mysterious house.
Dulce, una madre de familia que habita junto a su esposo Juan José y sus dos hijos en una casa bastante antigua en la que ocurren apariciones paranormales. Uno de sus hijos desaparece y Dulce es condenada a pasar 30 años de prisión por la desaparición de sus hijos, después de muchos años y ya bastante envejecida, vuelve a su casa a pasar el resto de sus días en un arresto domiciliario en una casa en la que no le gustaría estar, y con la ayuda de un sacerdote deciden terminar con el misterio de aquella casa misteriosa.
Once again, I was amazed at what I was seeing, the photography was beautiful, the performances were quite amazing, and the story, although it didn't scare me, was quite well told and managed to catch me until the last moment. That sci-fi touch gave the story the twist they needed, and in a country like ours, where paranormal stories are in everyone's mouths, it makes this one take a place among the most impressive ones. Alejandro Hidalgo did a great job in putting this film among the best of our country, but also, it has a Korean version and a few years ago it was known that the production company New Line Cinema was after the rights of the film to be released in Hollywood.
Una vez más, quedé sorprendida de lo que estaba viendo, la fotografía preciosa, unas actuaciones bastante sorprendentes, y una historia, que si bien a mí no me asustó, estuvo bastante bien contada y consiguió atraparme hasta el último momento. Ese toque de ciencia ficción le dio a la historia el vuelco que necesitaban, y en un país como el nuestro, en el que las historias paranormales están dispuestas en las bocas de todo el mundo, hace que esta tome un lugar entre las más impresionantes. Alejandro Hidalgo hizo un gran trabajo al poner a esta película entre las mejores de nuestro país, pero además, tiene una versión Coreana y hace unos años se supo que la productora New Line Cinema estaba tras los derechos de la película para que fuera lanzada en Hollywood.

To get into context before starting this review, I must point out that in Latin America the situation has not changed much in terms of homophobia and LGBT+ rights, it is important to say this because without this clarification it would be a bit complicated to say why it is the best film of all (in my opinion).
Para entrar en contexto antes de empezar a hacer esta reseña, debo acotar que en Latinoamérica no ha cambiado mucho la situación en cuanto a la homofobia y a los derechos LGBT+, es importante decir esto porque sin esta aclaratoria sería un poco complicado decir porque es la mejor película de todas (a mí parecer).
When this 2012 film was released, all of us in my country were a bit skeptical; even though there were already some well-made films, they were either completely violent cases, a lot of comedy, or both. But making a dramatic comedy was already something completely different from what our cinema had accustomed us to.
Cuando esta película de 2012 fue estrenada, todos en mi país estábamos algo escépticos; aunque ya hubieran algunas películas bien hechas, ya se trataban de casos completamente violentos, de mucha comedia o de ambos. Pero hacer una comedia dramática ya era algo completamente diferente a lo que nuestro cine nos tenía acostumbrados.
Diego is a photographer used to hobnobbing with the Venezuelan show business, and after several years he decides to move in with his partner Fabrizio, a very successful gynecobstetrician. After a horrible tragedy, Fabrizio is left in a coma after being attacked by homophobes and during this time Diego's 15-year-old son arrives in Venezuela after a 5-year stay in Spain. The film shows us a window into the situation of homophobia, transsexuality, and gender violence in the country, portraying elegantly the big problem that is happening all over Latin America.
Diego es un fotógrafo acostumbrado a codearse con la farándula venezolana, y después de varios años decide irse a vivir con su pareja Fabrizio, un ginecobstetra muy exitoso. Luego de una horrible tragedia, Fabrizio queda en coma al ser atacado a palazos por unos homófobos y durante este tiempo el hijo de 15 años de Diego llega a Venezuela luego de 5 años de estadía en España. La película nos muestra una ventana acerca de la situación acerca de la homofobia, la transexualidad y la violencia de género en el país, retratando de una manera elegante el gran problema que pasa en toda Latinoamérica.
As I have already described, the main focus is on gay parenthood; Diego, who had become accustomed to his life within the LGBT+ environment, suddenly finds himself taking on the role of father to a teenager whom he had not seen for many years. And of course, we meet Armando, a son practically abandoned by a father who only calls him when he remembers, and also discovers that not only his father is gay, but that they also have a serious relationship with Fabrizio. Everything revolves around the relationship between father and son, a resource that has already been used in many works and that will never go out of fashion, but this time we add the part of the sexuality of a father.
Así como ya lo he descrito, el principal foco de atención es la paternidad homosexual; Diego, quien ya se había acostumbrado a su vida dentro del ambiente LGBT+, de pronto se encuentra ocupando el rol de padre de un adolescente a quien tenía muchos años sin ver. Y por supuesto, nos encontramos con Armando, un hijo prácticamente abandonado por un padre que solo lo llama cuando se acuerda, y además descubre, que no solo su padre es gay, sino que también tienen una relación seria con Fabrizio. Todo gira en torno a la relación entre padre e hijo, un recurso que ya ha sido utilizado en muchísimas obras y que nunca dejará de pasar de moda, pero que en esta oportunidad se le suma la parte de la sexualidad de un padre.

On top of it all, Diego is also surrounded by people he considers his family, including Perla Marina, a woman who is physically abused by her husband, and Delirio, a transsexual who does very successful transvestite shows.
Además de todo, Diego también está rodeado de personas a quien considera su familia, entre las que se encuentran Perla Marina, una mujer que es abusada físicamente por su esposo, y Delirio, una transexual que hace unos shows travestis muy exitosos.

I will highlight the fact that although I was not part of the LGBT+ community, I know the problems that everyone goes through, I have seen with my own eyes the injustices that many friends have gone through being singled out by others, as well as I know many cases of mistreatment that have even led to the death of people that the only thing they have done is to be sexually different as if that should matter to anyone. We are in the middle of the year 2021, and even at this point, we have not known in my country, at least not officially, any petition or movement to start working for equal rights. I have great friends who have years living together, they love each other madly, they say they are spouses under the love they profess to each other, but it just stays there, without any paper to legalize their love.
Destacaré el hecho de que aunque no formé parte de la comunidad LGBT+, se cuáles son los problemas por los que todos pasan, he visto con mis propios ojos las injusticias que muchos amigos han podido pasar al ser señalados por otros, al igual que conozco muchos casos de maltratos que incluso han llevado a la muerte a personas que lo único que han hecho es ser sexualmente diferente, como si eso le debiera importar a alguien. Estamos en pleno año 2021, y aún a estas alturas, no hemos conocido en mi país, al menos no oficialmente, alguna petición o movimiento para empezar a trabajar por los derechos de igualdad. Tengo grandes amigos tienen años viviendo juntos, se aman con locura, dicen que son esposos bajo el amor que se profesan, pero solo queda allí, sin ningún papel que legalice su amor.
Miguel Ferrari did a great job in highlighting several situations that continue to occur daily even today, and I am sure that many of the people in my country who saw this film came away with a different thought about how love can be different from what we think; how a parent is a parent regardless of their sexuality and that this does not mean that their child is "converted" just because they are raised by a non-conventional family. We simply have to open our minds a little and by looking around us we can see that there is definitely room for everyone.
Miguel Ferrari hizo un gran trabajo al destacar varias situaciones que siguen ocurriendo a diario aún al día de hoy, y estoy segura, que muchas de las personas de mi país que vieron esta película, salieron con un pensamiento diferente acerca de como el amor puede ser diferente al que pensamos; como un padre es padre indiferentemente de su sexualidad y que esto no significa que su hijo se "convierta" solo por ser educado por uno familia no convencional. Simplemente debemos abrir un poco nuestra mente y al observar a nuestro alrededor podemos ver qué definitivamente hay espacio para todos.
In 2013, Miguel Ferrari received the Goya award for the best Ibero-American film of that year for this film, I remember very well the moment when they named Venezuela and the pride swelled my soul because I really deserved the award.
En el año 2013, Miguel Ferrari, recibe el premio Goya a la mejor película Iberoamericana de ese año por esta película, recuerdo muy bien el momento en que nombran a Venezuela y el orgullo me hinchó el alma porque realmente merecía el premio.
And then, everything changed. We came from seeing excellent samples of films as different as these three that I chose, none of them looked like the other, no more showing the decadent character of our country and showing more of the artistic capabilities that could be achieved, and definitely, something incredibly good could have come out if everything had gone on. And you may ask: What happened? In 2013 everything changes in the country, the president at the time dies, and the political system that was supported by fragile columns collapsed. Capital stopped entering the country, the most bestial hyperinflation ever known worldwide began. Everything that had to do with the social part began to explode: protests began to reign in the main cities of our country, shortages flooded us, and there was definitely no space or money to support any kind of art, even though there were many people who wanted to do it. You couldn't buy the equipment because there was no currency to make the purchases abroad: Filmmakers, writers, photographers, actors... And just as it started, it all ended.
Y luego, todo cambió. Venimos de ver excelentes muestras de películas tan diferentes como estas tres que escogí, ninguna se parecía a la otra, no más mostrar el carácter decadente de nuestro país y mostrar más las capacidades artísticas que podían lograrse, y definitivamente, podía haber salido algo increíblemente bueno si todo hubiera seguido. Y se preguntarán: ¿Qué pasó? En el año 2013 todo cambia en el país, muere el presidente en aquel momento, y el sistema político que estaba aguantado por unas frágiles columnas se derrumbó. Dejó de entrar capital al país, empezó la hiperinflación más bestial que se ha conocido a nivel mundial. Todo lo que tenía que ver con la parte social empezó a estallar: las protestas empezaron a reinar en las principales ciudades de nuestro país, la escasez nos inundaba, y definitivamente no había espacio ni dinero que apoyarán ningún tipo de arte, aún cuando incluso hubo mucha gente queriendo hacerlo. No sé podían comprar los aparatos porque no había divisa para hacer las compras en el exterior El talento empezó a emigrar: Cineastas, escritores, fotógrafos, actores... Y así como empezó, todo terminó.
I know that there will be many reviews of these films and that everyone will name them as the best, we all carry them deep inside us and treasure them without knowing why... And we fail to remember (at least I didn't until I started to make my entry for this contest) that it is because until that moment we were still doing well and then came the most difficult years that any Venezuelan could have lived through. I thank Luis Carlos Hueck, Miguel Ferrari, Alejandro Hidalgo, and many other directors of our country, for having been able to leave an indelible mark in the hearts of Venezuelans and I really hope that when all this passes, they all return to make the great films they have in store for us to feel more pride than we do now.
Se que habrá muchas reseñas de estas películas, y que todos las nombrarán como las mejores, todos las llevamos bien dentro de nosotros y las atesoramos sin saber por qué... Y no alcanzamos a recordar (al menos yo no lo hacía hasta que empecé a hacer mi entrada para este concurso) que es porque hasta ese momento aún estábamos bien y que luego vendrían los años más difíciles que cualquier venezolano pudo haber vivido. Le doy las gracias a Luis Carlos Hueck, a Miguel Ferrari, a Alejandro Hidalgo y a muchos otros directores de nuestro país, por haber podido dejar una marca imborrable en el corazón de los venezolanos y yo realmente espero, que cuando todo esto pase, todos vuelvan a hacer las grandes películas que nos tienen deparadas para sentir más orgullo del que tenemos ahora.

Papita, Maní, Tostón debe ser una de las películas (en general) más cómicas que he visto, me rei mucho de las ocurrencias y situaciones que le suceden a estos personajes, igual que la segunda parte que es una buena continuación de la historia; no es ni la más original de todas, pero creo que está bien escrita, el humor fluye y se ve que hay muy buena conexión entre todos los actores que participaron en ese film, ojalá algún día hagan una tercera parte.
Totalmente a lugar el contexto que le das a este post, 2013 el año que todo empezo a cambiar, lamentablemente para peor... buen analisis de estos preciados films Venezolanos Lore !! Bendiciones !!!
