Horror cinema has evolved significantly in many respects—particularly regarding special effects, makeup, and costumes—yet when it comes to handling terror and narrative techniques, it seems to me that the genre has actually regressed, leaving me looking back at the past with nostalgia. Today, I want to talk about the movies that traumatized me during my childhood. I won't claim they were the greatest films ever made; they simply left a deep impression on me. Of course, the fact that I was an impressionable young girl played a huge role in that impact, but we cannot deny that in the past, there was more visible effort put into creating terror on screen—everything felt more organic.

Night of the Living Dead

La noche de los Muertos Vivientes

I’m referring specifically to the 90s remake; if you compare it to series like *The Walking Dead*, it’s obvious the film falls short in many ways. But I swear, back when I watched it as a child, it gave me so many nightmares—to the point where I developed a strange love-hate relationship with zombies. 😄 On one hand, I was terrified of dreaming about them, yet I couldn't stop watching the movie. There were many factors that made it iconic—for instance, the way the zombies moved (slow and erratic), unlike the zombies in Korean film and TV (fast and precise, like beasts). That slow movement made them look unsettling, but another factor really stood out: their moans and wails. There’s one particular scene that made my hair stand on end: the opening, where Barbara and her brother go to leave flowers at their mother's grave and get attacked by a zombie. It’s both frustrating and terrifying to watch the zombie approach without them noticing—only for them to realize it’s actually an injured, disoriented old man (which puts you on high alert, knowing something is about to happen). Then, just as you start to relax, the real zombie appears out of nowhere. 😲 😱

Freddy Krueger

For me, he is the ultimate master of horror; I mean, the guy attacks in your dreams—and who can escape that? No one can avoid sleeping, especially when exhausted, and the longer you fight off sleep, the more tired you become—and the deeper the sleep will be when it finally hits. Dream encounters with Krueger are especially terrifying because he likes to toy with his victims' minds, emotionally shattering them before the physical attack. When I was a child, aside from his grotesque appearance, what truly traumatized me was the way he attacked and threatened—treating it like a game—and how he confused his victims until they could no longer distinguish reality from fantasy. The scene I find so disturbing that I still remember it today is the one where Nancy is searching for Tina in a dream and suddenly spots a bloody lump on the hallway floor being dragged by something invisible. At first, Nancy doesn't look terrified, just confused; while that might seem odd to us, we can't forget that it’s a nightmare—and in our dreams and nightmares, we don't react the same way we would in real life. Then, when Nancy reaches the boiler room, you can really feel the oppressive atmosphere created by the dim red lighting and the villain closing in. Brutal! 😁

Obviously, there are many more, but these are the ones that came to mind today—scenes that became etched in my memory, and I believe in the memories of many others, making them iconic.

Oh no, I still don't like these kinds of movies—sure, the fear isn't the same as when I was little, but they still make me incredibly nervous, haha. Great post.

Nightmare on Elm Street was something that haunted me as a child. I was not allowed to watch rated R movies at the time but a friend of mine had the VHS and I guess I would have been around 8 years old or so. There was a lot of aggravating sleepless nights in my household right after that as the story of a demon coming to get you in your bed was a truly terrifying topic matter for a child. These days Freddy is comical to the point of being a bit stupid but there was a time when that was the scariest thing ever.
