Controlled Freedom. | Colette: Liberation and Desire (2018)

We all know the skill of this actress when it comes to playing characters of the time, we already remember her in Pride and Prejudice and other outstanding films, so this time we would expect no less from her when starring in the life of a French writer and actress, a rebellious feminist for the 1900's, I say rebel because she sought to break free from the moral laws of the society of that time (which still persist in some places) and wants to finish discovering what she herself knew: her sexual orientation. Despite being married to a writer (somewhat mediocre), they enjoy a confidence and a somewhat strange and controversial intimacy in the eyes of society, in addition to certain "intimate liberties". Willy (her husband) turned Colette into his shadow when he noticed that what she wrote was much better than what he did, so they reached an agreement while allowing Colette to do whatever she wanted with whomever she wanted, as long as she continued to write her Claudine series for him. All this put her in the mouth of society and at the beginning she was not a big deal, but what she wrote (and that nobody knew), revolutionized women and enchanted men's fantasies, she was almost an icon thanks to those novels. In my opinion, what has always been more taboo: infidelity and even more homosexual sex, were not as frowned upon at that time as being a woman writer, or even having a profession. And if Colette could not deliver her novel with her name on it, she would let everyone know who those novels that everyone loved so much were about.

Todos sabemos la destreza de esta actriz a la hora de interpretar personajes de la época, ya la recordamos en Orgullo y Prejuicio y otros films resaltantes, así que esta ocasión no se esperaría menos de ella al protagonizar la vida de una escritora y actriz francesa, una feminista rebelde para los 1900, digo rebelde porque ella buscaba soltarse de las leyes morales de la sociedad de en ese entonces (que aún persisten en algunos sitios) y que quiere terminar de descubrir lo que ella misma sabia: su orientación sexual. A pesar de estar casada con un escritor (algo mediocre), gozan de una confianza y una intimidad algo extraña y controversial ante la sociedad, además de que se permitían ciertas “libertades íntimas”. Willy (su esposo) convirtió a Colette en su sombra al notar que lo que ella escribía era muchísimo mejor que lo que él hacía, así que llegaron a un acuerdo mientras permitía que Colette hacía lo que quisiera con quien quisiera, siempre y cuando siga escribiendo para él su serie Claudine. Todo esto la pone en boca de la sociedad y al principio no era la gran cosa, pero lo que ella escribía (y que nadie sabía), revolucionaba a las mujeres y encantaba a las fantasías de los hombres, casi era un ícono gracias a esas novelas. A mí parecer, lo que siempre ha sido más tabú: la infidelidad y más el sexo homosexual, no eran tan mal visto en ese entonces como sí el ser una mujer escritora, o tan si quiera que tuviera una profesión. Y si Colette no podía entregar su novela con su nombre, haría que todo el mundo supiera sobre quién eran esas novelas que tanto gustaban a todos.
