[ESP/ENG] JOKER (2019): Una película para pensar| A movie to think about

Sinceramente me encantó...

Something I really love is watching movies, but not just any movie but those that make you think and ask yourself questions either about the script, the plot or other aspects. One movie that I loved in this aspect was JOKER (2019), since it presents a totally different concept from those commonly seen in movies from universes like Marvel or DC Comics.

In my opinion it was a FILM GENIALITY, but today I want to share with you its most relevant aspects a bit more deeply.

WHO WAS ARTHUR?

Usually in these superhero movies a very marked distinction is created between heroes and villains, leaving a very marked contrast between black and white, good and evil. That's why I'm struck by the fact that this film has been created to show us "The whole picture" so to speak, showing us a part of the more human Joker: Arthur Fleck.

The first thing this film does is show us the background, and that is that Arthur Fleck is not a neurotypical person. There are many things that evidence a mental illness: hallucinations, uncontrollable laughter, feeling of constant uselessness, etc.

The "pseudobulbar" syndrome is a disease characterized by exaggerated or inappropriate emotional expression in a context. They may have uncontrollable outbursts of laughter or crying in an inappropriate situation. Hugo Sanchez explained that this is not the condition that El Joker suffers, because "this syndrome is linked to diseases such as Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's".

Joker only has bursts of laughter, but he doesn't suffer from uncontrollable crying, his laughter is simply caused by medication he takes.

There is also other evidence of his psychiatric disorder, the university professor added, is that subjects with mental illness try to regulate their symptoms by consuming substances that are available to them, but are not prescribed. For example, The Joker smokes heavily throughout history. "These patients smoke two or three times more than a nicotine addict".

Among some characteristics of schizophrenia, delirium of grandeur, megalomania, high irritability and hallucinations stand out: all of them are suffered by El Joker, he concluded.

So according to this media, Arthur Fleck suffers from some kind of schizophrenia. One thing that strikes me is that his laughter used to come out at the moments of greatest tension, as in the case of the comedy number, and that gives us an idea of how he reacted to difficult situations.

Arthur's life was not at all easy, as he had many conflicts to resolve. For example, his family situation was a disaster.

"I just hope that my death has more meaning than my life. -Arthur

Arthur had a great need for a father, and he reflected this with Murray as he imagined that he treated him like a father. Imagine our character's astonishment when he discovers a letter his mother sends to Thomas Wayne - the richest and most powerful man in Gotham - in which she expresses 'Your son and I need your help'.

It was like a bucket of cold water, and it felt more invisible. Society kicked him daily (sometimes even literally as in the case of the kids who stole his sign) because of his situation and now it turns out that his millionaire father never cared for him and denied it.

Of course, in the end we see that Thomas Wayne was not his father but...Arthur had a desire for revenge, and wanted to be seen.

SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT

The history of the Joker takes place in a typical class and disinterested society, and in fact this is a fundamental part of history.

Arthur being a low income person, was served by social services and from one day to the next this is cut from the budget. At the same time, he is kicked in the street by a group of bad kids who break his sign and then Arthur is forced to pay for it.

It is for this reason that when he commits the first murders in the subway, he becomes a symbol for society and a new movement is unleashed: "KILL THE RICH".

A group of communists use the same clown mask as Arthur to start a social chaos in which they defy all laws and society.

It is here that the Joker presents us with an ethical debate: Good or Bad?

He is a person with a mental illness, in a society full of bad people he is fighting. His gun was a gift from his co-worker, and his mother had let him be abused since he was a child.

But of course, the solution to all this is NOT to KILL THE RICH. Was the JOKER a social fighter or a villain?

I am completely fascinated by the way this film was developed. Let's see some aspects:

VISUAL ASPECT

JOKER is created to put us in Arthur's shoes, and that's why it creates a dark atmosphere using green as the main color, but sometimes it also shows us a more colorful and extravagant style reminding us that we are in front of a comic book character.

joaquinphoenixjoker1581517447.jpg

In this image we can notice that when Lawrence Sher (the director of photography) wanted us to feel closer to Arthur he used a darker photograph, while when he presented him as an imposing villain he used much more colorful tones.

GUIT AND ACTION

I will start by saying that I love that the script has so many conspiracy theories Ha-ha-ha. Seriously, I love it when a script has a lot to play. You can't imagine how many theories I've gotten.

I also like that they present an ethical-moral debate about the character, showing more the gray areas.

And as far as acting goes, WORLDLESS!

Joaquin Phoenix put so much effort and love into the production that he had to lower 20 KG to represent the character.

This is Joaquin Phoenix at his normal weight.

This is how Joaquin Phoenix looked after dropping 20 KG for his role.

Apart from that, the way he interpreted the character's laughter was INCREDIBLE. I sincerely loved it...

And well, to finish I want to share with you my favorite scene of the movie.

Amazing!
