The boy who harnessed the wind (review)

When I saw the trailer for this movie I knew it had to be on my list of movies to see, and I must say that it was totally worth it. Everything I thought it would be was shown to me in the plot of this raw and true story, since it is based on real events.

One of the things that impacted me about this movie is to see how they mixed the English with the Malawian language, for me it was impressive, but one of the things that I must highlight is the fact that both the production and the director of this movie focused more on the story of the boy William than on the political problems at that time, Of course, they didn't leave it aside being that in essence the problems of poverty arise from bad policies and the climatic effects on the village's crops, but, the main point, or rather the objective for which the film has been made, I must say that it was perfectly fulfilled.

To begin with, we see that several men are harvesting their crops while some children help them and play at the same time. Suddenly one of the older men falls to the ground dead, perhaps from some disease, that is something that is not made clear, but rather to the viewer's eye, surely we would all think that it is because of poor nutrition, or the arduous conditions in which these people have to work.

The next thing we see is William, a very intelligent boy who fixes devices in town, especially radios. He seems to be someone who sets out to do things and follow through. His parents give him a school uniform so that he can begin his studies, however we see that things get complicated because his parents have not paid his tuition.

Tension in the village starts to mount when they learn that the rains in neighboring villages have been wreaking havoc with the crops, something that is alarming given that they survive on this activity. The village meets with the chief of Malawi to study the situation as there was a not very pleasant solution to the financial problems they were going through, and this consisted of logging, where the landowners were going to give up their land for money.

This, however, was not the best solution for some, since the trees prevented the floods from completely damaging the crops, but even so, many others gave in to desperation and agreed, something that was soon to have consequences when the rains reached their town.

Indeed, many of the crops were damaged, and William's family's savings were only enough for certain necessities, leaving aside the possibility that he would be able to return to school. But in a way William was passionate about the knowledge he was gaining, and he did his best to sneak away even when he was warned by his teachers.

After the torrential rains came the drought, and with it fear spread throughout the town. William's father Trevor asks the chief to talk to the Governor so that he will not forget the farmers in the face of the weather consequences; an action that brings him to the point of death when the Governor's bodyguards take him down from the stage and beat him in an alleyway out of public view. An act that shows both the discontent of the people regarding governmental actions to solve the situation that can bring hunger to the people, and the corruption of a government that only cares about staying in power and denying reality.

Sooner rather than later, hunger in the village had arrived, due to the impossibility of sowing in arid lands; robberies began to happen very often, being affected William's family who had some dry corn to subsist.

In this plot you can feel the desperation of a people because of hunger, surely many of us identify ourselves when we see that they begin to depend on the little help that the government gives them because of the low prices that they offer, but with such a great demand, the whole town was submerged in a certain way in misery, even some began to emigrate.

It is then that William thinks of a plan, he goes to the school library with the help of his teacher, who by the way was forced to help him to keep his secret of the romance he had with his sister Annie. Having the knowledge in his hands and his intelligence, he devises a way to create a water pump to supply water to the field.

But we see that things become difficult for him when people, especially his father, do not believe in the potential that he could have, since his father always grew up working since he was a child, he did not go to school and therefore is ignorant of certain realities of science that can be useful to them.

There were many losses in this movie, Annie runs away with the professor to another town leaving a letter where he said "one less mouth", this in allusion to the little food they had for the four of them, since they could only eat once a day, it was all they had. But Annie played a key role in the progress of William's project by getting him a special tool.

After so many frustrations and seeing the reality of a town succumbing to hunger, William's father agreed to believe in his son and everyone in town helped him to carry out his plan, something that in the end was achieved, giving hope to the town and opening many doors to an intelligent boy who saved his town.
