NightWalker: Midnight Detective - Anime Movie Review

in Movies & TV Shows2 months ago

I finally let my brother and sister talk me into watching anime. I resisted a long time, but now I am hooked. The highlight of my day is watching Inuyasha on Cartoon Network. Too bad they took Cowboy Bebop off the lineup. Being a fan of the vampire literature genre, I thought it wouldn't hurt to give anime vamps a try. So I watched Nightwalker: Midnight Detective. The animation is good, your standard anime. The storyline is good, but it looks like between the 4th and 5th episodes that they changed artists because the characters look different.

The plot for these episodes is that we have Shido who is a vampire. He is also a detective that hunts demons in order to protect humans. He has the typical vampire complex that he once killed a lot of humans and repented, now aims not to harm humans. He also cannot remember who he was before he became a vampire. To fight the demons, he makes a sword out of his own blood. His three supporting characters include: Yayoi, a sexy woman who works for some kind of police/demon tracking task force--she brings in the new cases and is also Shido's bloodbank. (Did I mention he is gorgeous? He could suck on me anytime) Riho, young secretary whose family was destroyed by demons--she is clueless to his nature.

He also has a small green friendly smart-aleck demon, Guni, that sits on his shoulder. You are not given a lot of background in the first episode, it just throws you right in the mix. The first case is about a demon who wrecks vehicles in order to feed and to obtain a human body to inhabit. Each episode is a new night featuring a new case.

The interactions and information shared between the characters makes you like them and keeps a running plot weaving through the episodes. Sometimes a plot runs through more than one episode with one demon causing two events that at first glance seem to be separate cases. The reoccurring themes are light against darkness and each person's individual struggle with yourself about right and wrong.

I really enjoyed the six episodes that I saw, and I look forward to seeing the final six. If you like anime or vampire stories then you will probably enjoy this series. Warning: There is some nudity in this series.
