2008 and Bitcoin — 2020 and Hive

Written in English and Spanish.

We have all heard about the financial crisis of 2008. Likewise, we have heard about the Great Depression of 1929. Some attribute these crises to failures of the capitalist system and the free market; others to central banks, States, governments and their economic policies of central planning, printing money and regulating the economy.

Regardless of who is right (which obviously the latter are largely right), the truth is that people over many decades have been economically at the mercy of a government, a central bank or any third party.

Thus, Bitcoin emerged as a concept in a Whitepaper published by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008. Then in 2009 the genesis block was created and mined by Satoshi. The idea of Bitcoin is to create digital money resistant to inflation, where no one can alter the supply of the currency but it is a protocol openly known and safeguarded and discussed by anyone who wants to join.

With this in mind, Bitcoin is probably the most disruptive thing to emerge in this century, and it is not unlikely that we will make it to the 22nd Century without something even more disruptive emerging, at least in economic terms.

Bitcoin has emerged primarily as a store of value and savings. As a means of payment it has many disadvantages, however, systems such as Lightning Network could solve this so that payments in small amounts can be made faster and with lower fees.

As more people become aware of what Bitcoin has to offer, the more it becomes clear how much damage central banks have caused over the last 100 years. The natural path of any system or way of life is to evolve, and any obsolete system is destined to change or disappear.

It doesn't matter the identity behind Satoshi Nakamoto. Sooner or later, something or someone was bound to emerge anyway to oppose this central banking dominance. My thinking is that this is the way nature works, it is a natural thing that if one animal species becomes too dominant, nature will take it upon itself to seek balance through something to counteract its dominance.

Human beings and the systems they create are not exempt from this, we are also part of nature.

Hive 2020

We have already seen monetary disruption with Bitcoin. While Hive is also a cryptocurrency, with Hive we are seeing something similar but in the realm of social networks.

The problem of censorship in social media has been around for a long time. However, in the digital age, people found themselves with the ability to connect with each other and publish their content on the web, through platforms that have been very successful.

But the underlying problem would not take long to manifest itself. It is not large central banks but large companies that dictate what content is valid or not on these platforms. This makes sense in order not to allow inappropriate content, but it gives them the power to censor in a totalitarian way according to their interests, and even more so if political motives are involved.

Although this had already been evident before, the year 2020 marked a before and after in the field of social networks.

Hive was born precisely in 2020, and although it was not born from zero, it is perhaps the only blockchain platform that is actively promoted as a solution to censorship in traditional social networks.

There are other blockchain platforms, but it seems that the issue of freedom of expression in these is more in the second plane.

Hive is perhaps more focused on content creators than the common user who is just looking to socialize. It is known that many cryptocurrency channels on YouTube are being arbitrarily shut down, as well as Reddit recently shut down the Sub-Reddit dedicated to the topic of WallStreetBets. 3Speak and LeoFinance offer a solution to these two groups.

According to this analogy of Bitcoin as a monetary disruption and Hive as a social media disruption, Hive would be just in the "2010" of Bitcoin. However, cryptocurrencies are more influential today than they were in 2010, and changes are happening faster.

It may be a few years before any big names join Hive, just as Elon Musk has already invested in Bitcoin, but the potential is there. Leave a comment.

Deja tu comentario.
