What Plagiarism Is and How To Avoid It

If you reside in a rough location you'd probably know better how thieves are treated, not for once have I witness them spared, it's always a rough experience regardless of what was stolen or how little it was!

I attended an Online school for writers last year, pretty much completed a few courses before the loads became too much on me as though I had a new life and job to build from, that was when I became blogging on Leofinance. It was always assignments upon assignments, sometimes we had some not mandatory assignments just for fun, but it was always tempting to try them out because of the later benefits of it.

One thing I achieved from my online school was how to make my articles look presentable. This has everything to do with choice of language, text format and images chosen. Else writing a good worded out article, this little things gives more credit to your work. My choice of language has always been going with a simplified vocabulary, just so that I could reach a wider audience, even though I most times attach a bit of humor in there, it's always in a friendly language

Now, I'll start by asking a very straight forward question...

How would you feel when you spent hours preparing a project and then someone else takes credit for it?

I can tell that it's not a good feeling. In my school the moment you plagiarise an assignment, you're out! But you are always welcome to try again next session, that is, if only you'd change.

What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work.
Source

The first thing you should notice from the definition above if you're really observant, is that it is quoted and there's a link to the source where it's gotten from!

By doing this, I have actually made the first step to avoid taking credits for that definition! I didn't call it mine because it's not, and to add to my honesty, I left a reference link giving the original author the full credit for it!

Plagiarizing a content is highly consequential, in a lawful sense, one can actually get sued to court and billed everything he got for such act. But sadly very few know how much of a crime it is.

While writing an article, especially when it's a research article whereas there will definitely be need for the attachment of external informations. It is highly recommended that one takes note of the external informations, present them in systemically quoted formed like what I did above or by using this type of quotes (" "), and most times it's recommended you leave a link to the reference page.

This not only shows that you're a good content creator, it also shows that you value the efforts of others and wouldn't want to take away the spotlight that should be on them.

A standard system believes that a content creator should own 80% of any content presented! If at all any form of the entire work has to be externally obtained, it should be at the range of 20% or lower. A certain badge is given to contents with 80% author claim uniqueness, and that's the 'OC' badge which is an acronym for Original Content.

You can determine the uniqueness of your articles by using any or both of these tools:

Smallseotools and Grammarly

The tools may not be required if you're a writer who knows just how to brush up an article regardless of the external informations.

Anyway, by possessing such badges on your content both you and the platform where the publication is made, are in an agreement that you pretty much own the bigger percentage of the work, just between or above the 80% mark.

Unlike the random social media lifestyle, where we see a story online and feel we should share it with our friends. This is pretty normal, everyone understands that people won't click on random links, so the best thing to do is copy and paste the entire story on our social media Handles. This is totally different compared to what should be done on Crypto fueled platforms, where content monetization has been made simple. Posting things on your socials get you no money in the process, but on here, whereas you could make a ton of money, it is not acceptable! If community members "US ALL" don't take actions on these set of people, there's a possibility that they could one day get into the hands of the law and face higher charges.

Not only articles get plagiarized, videos and images too are. Copyrights without legal rights get penalized. The image aspect most times get overlooked, but the possibility of getting sued if you accidentally used a "not free" image is always there.

Plagiarism only lowers a person's standard and therein treats the original content owners wrongly. It is never the right move so we all should fight against it by checking ourselves first, then examine others. That way, we all contribute and keep the system clean.

Keep Leofinance Clean, Keep Hive Clean, Keep the world free from content thieves

And remember that badbitch is watching

I'm glad you've chosen to take on this new job... plagiarism is one of the most annoying things on the planet, and I say that from the perspective of having had my content stolen many times in the course of 20+ years of blogging and creating content.

Perhaps the worst is when some unnamed and untraceable rips off several of your articles that you've tried to monetize with Adsense and other stuff... and then puts YOUR work behind a "paywall!"

Yes, that actually happened. Sadly, the site was pretty much untraceable and located in China, so no recourse.

In a community like this, we at least have some recourse.

Anyway, thanks for what you're doing!

=^..^=

I have done something similar to what might be considered plagiarism. With the community I created called “Restore the Republic” although I gave blatant credit in the description of the community in what the purpose of my “mirroring” of content onto the hive-blockchain.
I realized I needed to put more of myself into those mirrorings, and it isn’t a hard task to do at all.
My time and resources are stretched thin, and crypto/blockchain ecosystem are a vast and sometimes overwhelming place. I have put the RTR project on the back burner for now.

I am not much of an original content creator.. I am mostly a promoter of what I see as good, informational content, and solutions to the current situation we are all suffering under. And I use these things as items in my tool belt in order to convey complex topics that I would butcher on my own.
I am trying vary hard now, to do everything I can to put as much of myself as possible into the content I am producing on hive.

Thanks for this post!

Judging from your well written comment, I'd say you're not far from being a good writer yourself. Like I mentioned in my post above, the usage of external informations most times come in, but one has to attach much of his own words so as to keep the content off the lane of being a copy and pasted shit.

I really appreciate your time to read through this, and am glad you find it useful.

Good luck on the image front. That has been a constant issue on all the tribes in Hive. People think just because an image is on Google it is fair game. How untrue that is. I wrote a post about it a while ago. I am going to share this again. Nice post!

It used to make me laugh on the Tsu site when people said they got a picture from Google, i.e. they did an image search, but did not bother checking the licence. You can search specifically for images you are allowed to re-use. Some do require attribution.

Well, the reason why people fancy Google photos is because most times it has just what we want, unlike free photos, most of them don't quite capture what we feel to express at times.

We just have to be careful tho...

It is a great resource, but you have to be careful what you use, especially when getting paid for it. Some people don't seem to realise that.

Exactly my point, the penalties are there as though we are getting paid for it.

I have really come to love pixabay. Sports is hard because you want that photo from the most recent game, but a lot of people use Getty images and that is just a huge no no.

True. I've used pixabay exclusively in all my posts. They've got some great works and even provide HTML citations for our blogs.

This is a nice reminder, we have to be sure to create quality content and be sure to give credit where it's due when we aren't creating it

I love your CV :) tho.

I used to utilize Dupli checker, but at some point it had its percentage results all wrong, even though the sources were always provided, maybe it's updated now.

To keep Leofinance clean and at large the entire chain HIVE, we'd need a collective effort. So everyone is welcomed to fetch out those plagiarist...

That means piracy of a content, then manipulation and added some extra note on it which gives it different look and claim a original content creator. If references used then it could be avoid plagiarism.

It is not content piracy because you're making it fully known that these certain parts don't belong to you, and you're giving reference to where they are from, thereby giving the author of those certain words the credit.

Besides, when creating a post, you are not expecting to copy everything from word to word and then add your own, that would be crazy! What would you possibly what to say about every single word of another author? It's not just possible.

It is only content piracy when one tries to paraphrase the whole article by changing forms of written words and stuff, and along the line not giving any credit to the original author.

I have shared your article on Leo Talk.

Thanks for your efforts on raising awareness regarding plagiarism. You are contributing to make LeoFinance a better community.

I started using Grammarly a while ago but I didn't have high hopes on it. Man, was I wrong. It's a great little tool. The free version is so good that I'm really considering upgrading to a paid plan.

pixabay is a nice place for images because it offers copyright-free images and I prefer to use it. I think more awareness is needed for new users here about this matter. thanks for sharing the post
